Chapter 28 - What a Perfect Life!
“Singing my heart out on my beloved little scooter… well, it’s a bicycle now, but who cares… It’ll never get stuck in traffic~”
Humming a tune, Meng Xu cycled through the alleys, navigating his way to the destination with the aid of his GPS.
Behind him, a tide of zombies surged!
Many of the undead wandered hysterically through the streets, their tormented howls echoing from all directions.
Trembling survivors hiding in their homes, glancing out their windows, witnessed the astonishing sight.
“Is he not afraid of death?! Riding a bicycle so boldly through all that?!”
Such a scene left them flabbergasted, giving them a taste of the world’s bizarre variety.
They were bewildered, utterly unable to comprehend why this was happening.
For Meng Xu, everything was much simpler.
The Bureau of Commerce was situated in the old town, conveniently near a bank, allowing him to handle two errands at once. As for the other departments, Meng Xu figured he could complete all the necessary procedures within two days.
Of course, it was worth mentioning.
Meng Xu’s rental was nearby, so he was quite familiar with the routes in the area.
This familiarity was one reason he could avoid the densely populated zombie clusters in the busy areas.
“Whew~”
Taking a deep breath and looking around, Meng Xu felt the sunshine was bright, and even the zombified, grotesque faces around seemed somewhat endearing to him in that moment.
His heart raced with excitement, and his hands trembled.
Meng Xu had never imagined he would one day be entering the Bureau of Commerce to register a company!
“The Meng family has produced a big boss!”
Meng Xu parked the bicycle and saw a female zombie approaching—she seemed to be a doctor, wearing a blood-stained white coat, her face contorted, her body twitching.
Originally, she looked sluggish and clumsy, moving very slowly.
But the moment she saw Meng Xu, she sprang forward like Usain Bolt.
Meng Xu remembered there were no hospitals near his rental, but there was a notorious street known for its adult entertainment venues—he had never been there, but seeing this rather suggestive “doctor,” Meng Xu understood a lot.
“Role-playing, huh.”
Today, Meng Xu was in a good mood and did not really want to kill. “Go ahead, I don’t feel like killing you today,” he said.
The zombie, of course, couldn’t understand human language and continued its ferocious attack.
Meng Xu could only sigh and swing his bat, then grab his wrench and start a frenzy of slaughter.
He didn’t stop until the zombie, which initially looked somewhat suggestive, was completely motionless.
Wiping the blood splatters from his face, the sunny smile that had once been there vanished without a trace.
“Zombies have become unpleasant.”
After a sigh, Meng Xu turned stylishly and headed towards the Bureau of Commerce.
The building itself seemed unchanged, except for a uniformed zombie in the duty room, slowly banging its head against the door frame with its back to Meng Xu. Meng Xu looked at the sign at the entrance, checked the business hours, then looked at his phone and frowned.
“Darn it, they’re closed for lunch at 11:30 and won’t reopen until 1:30 PM!”
Meng Xu sighed deeply, scanning the area and noting the increasing number of zombies. It was clear he couldn’t wait here until they reopened.
With that thought, Meng Xu approached the security duty room and knocked on the glass.
“Knock, knock, knock.”
The clear sound instantly attracted the uniformed zombie’s attention. It twisted its neck to face Meng Xu, roaring, “Roar ——!!!”
The zombie then banged its head violently against the glass, seemingly trying to break out and tear Meng Xu to pieces.
Seeing the security guard in this state, Meng Xu thought for a moment and then shouted, “Hey, security guy, can you vouch for me? I arrived first, so if we need to handle paperwork later, I should go first, okay?”
“If you don’t say anything, I’ll take it as a yes.”
Satisfied with his decision, Meng Xu nodded and, ignoring the struggling security zombie, quickly headed to the side of the road, mounted a shared bike, and pedaled back to his rental place.
There were two hours until they reopened. During this time, he could go home, take a nap, and change his clothes.
He could also pack his belongings.
As a boss, he certainly needed to be one with his company.
Every big boss has a secret room in their office, stocked with all the necessities of life and maybe a beautiful secretary… ahem, fully equipped with everything.
As for the rental place?
Meng Xu had just one assessment.
Farewell, cage!
With that thought, Meng Xu pedaled easily back to the residential area.
The neighborhood was an old-style residential area with no elevators.
The average age of the residents was quite high; wherever you looked, you saw elderly folks or young school kids.
There were also some middle-aged couples living there.
But overall, describing this place as home to the old, weak, and disabled was quite accurate.
Meng Xu rode his bicycle casually into the neighborhood.
After passing through the main gate, he was immediately confronted by a bald, disemboweled zombie rushing at him, red-eyed and snarling.
“Well, isn’t it Grandpa Li? I told you to eat less and not have such a big belly. Now look, someone’s gutted you.”
Meng Xu raised his wrench, dodged the attack smoothly, and then struck the back of the zombie’s head with precision, force, and accuracy. By now, he had ample experience killing zombies.
With advantages in both strength and speed, taking down a mindless zombie was too easy.
However, Meng Xu remained highly aware of the potential dangers.
Mutant zombies.
If one could appear, a second could naturally follow.
Zombies are weak now, but no one knows how they might evolve in the future.
Staying vigilant is the key to thriving in a chaotic world.
While pondering this, Meng Xu made his way to his building.
The neighborhood was small, so he saw few people on the way, only occasionally encountering a few scattered zombies, which he quickly dealt with.
These zombies were all elderly.
Fighting them was effortless.
With ease, Meng Xu even considered, “Should I relocate my company here?”
The zombies at the Kechuang Building were young and strong, requiring full concentration to fight.
Here, the zombies were frail and easier to handle despite still needing attention.
Parking his bike downstairs, Meng Xu didn’t worry about theft: it’s the apocalypse; zombies won’t steal a bike, right?
With that thought, he began climbing the stairs.
Meng Xu lived on the fifth floor. Without an elevator, the fifth-floor apartment was cheaper, and being young and strong, he didn’t mind the stairs.
“Bang, bang, bang!”
As if they knew Meng Xu had returned, downstairs neighbors eagerly pounded on their doors, seemingly welcoming him back.
They also let out low growls.
Seeing this, Meng Xu was delighted.
These neighbors had mostly just nodded to him in passing, but now they were so excited to see him return safely.
Filled with emotion, Meng Xu responded, “Okay, okay. Everyone’s fine. Maybe we can make dumplings together sometime!”
Such good neighbors!
Men silently weep, and women cry even more.
Reaching the fourth floor, Meng Xu noticed his downstairs neighbor’s door wide open but with no signs of struggle. The residents had apparently fled. He thoughtfully closed their door before heading up to the fifth floor, where he took out his key and unlocked his door.
Familiar furniture greeted him, filling Meng Xu with warmth.
Caring neighbors and a kindhearted self—what a perfect life! Do any of you have such a perfect life? Truly wonderful!
“Let’s take a shower, then a nap.”
Meng Xu tossed the baseball bat and wrench aside, stretching his muscles. “It’s been a while since I’ve felt this relaxed!”
