Chapter 6 - Career Upgrade
“Clatter…”
The noise of things shattering reached Shen Zhaozhao’s ears. She heard the sound of glass being struck and the savage growls, but soon the noise seemed to disappear, leaving behind a rustling sound outside.
And then she heard something that left her completely baffled: “This order counts as a premium one, right?”
What does that mean, a premium order?
Shen Zhaozhao was taken aback.
Should she go out and ask for help?
Thinking of this, Shen Zhaozhao moved the clutter aside and opened a small crack. Peering through the gap in the restroom door, she saw her two zombified colleagues pressing their bloodstained faces against the glass, surrounded by not-yet-dried blood.
In the corridor, a handsome young man with stylishly tousled bangs was casually standing in front of the glass door, confidently talking to the snarling zombies on the other side while holding up leaflets: “Gentlemen, how about swimming fitness? Our club is specially prepared for sedentary office zombies. Sign up now and get exclusive private lessons with a sexy zombie trainer for online coaching…”
“And you two gentlemen, even zombies need a competitive edge. Think about it, if you learn to swim, you can outperform other zombies and have an easier time catching people.”
“And consider this, if you don’t work hard, you’ll be just ordinary zombies for life! Don’t you have any dreams? Like the dream of becoming the zombie king? Feel the applause and come join our swimming fitness club. The first session is a free trial…”
“Zombie brothers, I see the red glow in your eyes—isn’t that excitement? Don’t just be excited, take action! Order now, buy 5 sessions, get 1 free!”
“…”
Shen Zhaozhao was completely stunned.
What is going on?
Her eyes widened in disbelief as she kept blinking, unable to believe what she was seeing.
It’s the apocalypse, and you’re promoting swimming fitness to zombies?
What red glow?
Aren’t zombie eyes naturally red?!
Shen Zhaozhao was at a loss for words. Now, she could only hope that the lunatic outside might somehow save her from danger.
Unfortunately, her hopes were dashed.
After giving his pitch several times, the person just turned around and left, leaving Shen Zhaozhao feeling a wave of disappointment. However, she soon noticed he had a rope in his hand, and the other end of the rope was tied to a zombie.
Wait a minute.
Shen Zhaozhao rubbed her eyes and looked again.
No mistake, it was a zombie.
A zombie?!
What’s going on here?
What kind of expert is this? Other people walk dogs, and you’re walking zombies?!
Shen Zhaozhao’s eyes nearly popped out of her head.
“Being trapped in a confined space for too long must have made me crazy. I’m starting to have such bizarre hallucinations.”
Muttering to herself, Shen Zhaozhao quickly shut the small gap she had opened and piled the clutter back up after seeing Meng Xu leave without looking back.
Luckily, she had brought her bag when she came in, and it was packed with plenty of food to last her a while.
As for water?
In the restroom, did she really need to worry about water?
The water supply shouldn’t be cut off anytime soon.
Feeling a bit bored, Shen Zhaozhao picked up her phone again. Taking advantage of the weak signal, she couldn’t help but post a new thread among the many help requests.
《I’ve probably been trapped too long. I just saw a guy handing out flyers and promoting swimming fitness to zombies… I have no idea if I’ve gone mad or if the workers have finally been driven insane.》
…
【Dear Host, never would we have thought that your eloquence was so remarkable. You managed to keep two clients fully engaged for 15 minutes. Although they didn’t buy anything in the end, the effect of this order has amassed considerable experience for your career! Congratulations, we believe you can definitely become the legendary Leaflet Distributor!】
【Extra rewards earned: Career Experience +3, Number of leaflets to distribute -20.】
Seeing the golden text in front of him, Meng Xu knew that the utility of the two zombies behind the glass door had been exhausted. With cold and ruthless efficiency, he dropped two leaflets and tugged on the rope, signaling for Zombie Manager Zhang and Zombie Chi Wei to move on.
Meng Xu’s peculiar adventure wasn’t going smoothly, but it did allow him to successfully lead two zombies to this point. The method he used was quite simple.
There’s a gaming term called “positioning lock.”
Because these two zombies detested him and didn’t want to be near him, whenever he moved forward, they would move forward, and when he moved back, they would move back, always maintaining a safe distance.
So, when entering new floors,
He could send these two zombies in to scout. If they encountered other zombies, these two would stall them, slowing down any attacking zombies.
He could then escape using “positioning lock” tricks to maintain distance from all zombies.
However, once he reached the eighth floor, Meng Xu found the effectiveness diminishing.
The floors above the eighth were all high-end offices. Meng Xu’s office was solidly walled, but here, most walls were glass, making the entire layout visible from the outside. Some companies used frosted glass, creating a blurry view.
But even frosted glass could reveal silhouettes.
Although Meng Xu had just confidently promoted fitness in front of the glass wall for 15 minutes, he was actually quite fearful.
What if the zombies broke the glass and rushed out?
“It’s the apocalypse, who would’ve thought distributing leaflets could still be life-threatening.”
Meng Xu mumbled to himself, seeming much calmer than he was a few hours ago: “Tsk, if every job was like this, could my career level skyrocket?”
“But then again, what exactly is the point of leveling up this career?”
After pondering over it for a while, Meng Xu decided to return to his initial floor.
The floors above the eighth were too scary.
Meng Xu had already distributed over two hundred leaflets, leaving about half still to be handed out. Fortunately, the task has no time limit. He planned to go back, have lunch, and continue in the afternoon.
Additionally, he needed to consolidate the resources he had collected on this trip.
Even with the Perfect Life System, it was crucial to consider the basic material needs.
Points…
Though he didn’t know their future use, Meng Xu thought it was worth accumulating them. Who knows, maybe he could trade them for a giant robot someday?
At the very least, getting some advanced weapons would help. Even a simple silenced pistol could significantly boost his efficiency.
Quietly, Meng Xu returned to the fourth floor.
Leading the way with two zombies tied to ropes, much like on his way up.
These two zombies gave Meng Xu a strange sense of comfort.
Back on the fourth floor, Meng Xu looked back at Manager Zhang and Chi Wei, nodding in satisfaction. He tied the ropes to a door handle and then glanced at a third office not far away. After taking a deep breath, he decided to return to his own office.
“Gulp, gulp.”
Back in his office, Meng Xu plopped down in his chair and chugged a cup of water.
After finishing, Meng Xu focused his thoughts, and a moment later, a status panel appeared before his eyes.
