My Revenge Marriage

Chapter 5: The proposal

Selene's pov~

They checked my drawers, disarranged my desk, made a commotion everywhere but the ring was nowhere to be found. The way Jessica searched for it made it seem like she was so sure it would be there. I watched her agitated face and smiled inwardly. Cassie was also subtly surprised that they hadn't found it.

"You bitch, you hid it." Jessica huffed at me after many failed attempts to find the ring.

"I told you I didn't take it, you chose not to believe me," I said, wide-eyed.

"Search her down. I'm sure it with her." Jessica was hell bent on catching me with the ring but there was no way I would be searched for something that wasn't on me.

"Stay back." I said as the male colleagues moved towards me.

"Hold her, you guys!" Jessica screamed. She was furious.

"Stay away from me." I said and tried making a break for it but was immediately caught but strong arms on my wrists. They pinned me to the floor and I groaned in pain.

"Let me go." I struggled, feeling their weights on me, "This is harassment. I'll take it up with the higher-ups if you don't let me go right now."

Jessica smirked.

I looked over at the manager who was at the corner of the room, observing everything.

"Sir!" I yelled, "Sir, help me. Do something. Don't just stay there. They're abusing me."

He didn't even flinch, he pretended like he didn't hear me and stayed rooted to his spot. Jessica began with my skirt, searching it vigorously. I held a tear back, not wanting them to see my moment of weakness.

"I don't have the ring." I spat at her. "Let me go."

"In a minute," Jessica said, still searching me. After minutes of searching and searching, she still didn't find anything. "Where the hell did you put it."

"I told you I didn't take it. Now let me go." I said and the men released me. I lifted myself from the floor and noticed Ian, he had come in during all the fuss. My heart ached that he didn't come to help me as they publicly humiliated me.

"So, where's my ring?" Cassie whimpered and ran over to Ian's arms, "Baby, someone stole my ring."

Ian glared at me as he stroke her head. "Where'd you leave it, baby?" He asked her.

Their lovey dovey gestures made me sick to my stomach.

"In my purse." Cassie replied to him and my ears perked up.

"You sure you checked it well?" Ian asked and Cassie went over to her desk to take her bag. She emptied the contents onto the floor, as if annoyed that Ian dared to ask her if she wasn't just being forgetful.

The ring fell and made a loud clank against the floor, everyone's gaze turned to the fallen ring and Cassie looked absolutely horrified.

"Wha... What is this doing here?" She asked, all flustered. "Jessica, what is this doing here?"

Jessica flinched, also flustered. "Well how am I supposed to know that? It's your bag and your ring."

"What the hell?" one coworker muttered.

"It was in her bag all along?" another said.

"Should we apologize to Selene?"

"That crazy bitch, putting on ahunt for something that was with her the whole time."

Cassie stumbled, unable to believe her eyes, "N...no, no, it really wasn't supposed to be here. Believe me." She pleaded. "That's right, her." She pointed at me. "She must have put it in my bag."

"How can she put it in your bag if it was yours to begin with?" Valentine emerged from behind me. "Why were you so sure it was with her in the first place. Isn't this whole thing fishy?"

Murmurs erupted in support of Sophie, while I was glad they were starting to see sense in things, they'd still assaulted me and no one tried to stop them.

"I'm sorry for the misunderstanding." Ian said, trying to calm the noise. "Cassie has had a long day. Her best friend suddenly ended their friendship out of anger, she's in a bad state of health, please forgive her for her absentmindedness."

Bullshit. I ended our friendship? I wanted to say something but decided it was better to let things die down. I was exhausted.

Cassie suddenly started crying, asking them to believe her. " I really checked," she sobbed, "It wasn't there. Someone put that there to make me seem like a liar."

I stepped forward, moving towards her. "Because of you, I was humiliated. Apologize."

"Selene, what are you doing?" Ian moved closer to me. "Cassie is in a bad state right now. Stop being selfish."

"I was pinned to the floor and searched like a criminal for something I didn't do." I told him. "I want an apology."

"This isn't the time for this. Grow up." Ian said and went over to a wailing Cassie, helping her pick up the contents of her bag.

I turned back to look at my coworkers. "Don't you guys think I deserve an apology for what happened?" I asked them and no one answered. None of them wanted to apologize for being bystanders or actively engaging in the bullying.

I was tired of this, tired of being pushed around by people, tired of having no power. I wanted everyone who had wronged me to regret it. Suddenly, an idea came to mind.

I took one look at the manager, who was still in the corner of the room, not moving, not getting involved and I went to my desk to pick up my things and exited the office. I made my way to the highest floor of the building, to Mr Evans office.

His secretary tried stopping me from entering but I pushed through and kicked open the door to his office. His eyes emerged from behind the computer and he looked at me. I walked over to his desk ignoring the secretary who was trying to get me to leave.

"It's okay. You can leave, Evalie." He said with a dismissive tone and she closed the door behind her, stepping out.

I reached his table and slammed my purse on his table, looking at him straight in the eyes.

"Sir," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

His blue eyes looked at my hazel eyes intensely, not daring to turn away.

"Yes, Selene?" He said, his voice low and calm.

"Marry me." I deadpanned.

He blinked.

I stared at him more intensely and he blinked again.

"What?" He asked, his expression a mix of fluster and confusion.

"You need a wife, right?" I asked. "People in the office have been talking about how your mother wants you to find a wife so I'm stepping up. Let me be your wife."

His expression turned neutral with a tinge of amusement, "Why should I marry you, Selene?"

"Because you like me, sir." I said and surprise flashed all over his face. "It's quite obvious, sir. And I'm not a fool."

"B-b-b-but h-how did you know?" He stuttered. He always seemed so cool and collected but seeing him flustered was definitely a first for me. It was cute.

"Like I said, sir. I'm not a fool. I've known for quite a while. It's a good deal for you. You get to marry someone you actually like instead of some stranger you might never develop feelings for." I said.

His expression suddenly turned serious, "Why are you proposing this? What's in it for you?"

"I will help you get your mother off your back, in turn, I need your name and power for my revenge." I said.

He smiled slightly at me.

"This is better than asking me to lunch, you know. It's progress." I added.

His smile for brighter and he leaned forward, bringing his face closer to mine. With a low whisper, he said, "No."
