Chapter 17: Chapter 16: Rage in the stomach

The beast leapt without warning, a flash of muscle and claws. Foster reacted instinctively, diving to the side as the creature struck the ground where he had been a split second earlier. The impact shook the ground, splinters of earth and wood flying in all directions.

He swivelled quickly, attempting a flanking attack. His blade sliced through the flesh, but the beast's skin, strengthened by corruption, deflected most of the blow. A superficial cut, nothing more.

The creature roared, the sound echoing through the forest like thunder, and struck again. This time Foster parried the blow with his sword, but the sheer force of it knocked him back several steps.

- Shit! It's too fast!

The beast leapt without warning, a flash of muscle and claws. Foster reacted instinctively, diving to the side as the creature struck the ground where he had been a split second earlier. The impact shook the ground, splinters of earth and wood flying in all directions.

He pivoted quickly, attempting an attack on his flank. His blade sliced through the flesh, but the beast's skin, strengthened by corruption, deflected most of the blow. A superficial cut, nothing more.

He used his Ki to strengthen his legs and leapt backwards, narrowly dodging a series of claws. Then he concentrated his mana into a fireball, which he hurled directly at the beast's open mouth.

The explosion lit up the forest, scorching the creature's muzzle. It recoiled, grunting in pain, but this only amplified its rage.

Foster stepped back, catching his breath, but the beast gave him no respite. It charged again

The beast was a storm of pure violence, striking with terrifying speed and force. Foster barely dodged each attack, his movements becoming increasingly precise thanks to his heightened perception. He could see the creature's muscles tensing before each blow, anticipating its movements, but even that wasn't enough.

An opening. Foster took advantage of a moment when the creature straightened up to strike. His blade plunged deep into the beast's hind leg, severing a tendon. A heart-rending howl went up, and the creature wobbled.

But it didn't stop, as if it didn't feel the pain at all.

On the contrary, it turned around with lightning speed, its gaping maw closing a few centimetres from Foster's face. He stepped back, almost stumbling, and hurled another fireball straight at its side.

The creature, still enraged, turned just in time to receive the full force of the attack in its side. The explosion ripped through the air, throwing up splinters of flesh and an unbearable smell of burning. But, to his horror, that wasn't enough. The beast staggered, its blackened skin smoking, but it continued to move, its muscles quivering as the electricity coursed through its coat.

The cold rage boiling inside him reached a point of no return, the memory of the horror that was these abominations and knowing how powerful these things would be in the coming months when their experiments were successful, enough to make him boil inside.

[Reward: Beginner Magic Talent]

His magic, usually limited to a few rudimentary spells, suddenly seemed more powerful, more fluid. He could feel it immediately: his magical reserves were expanding, his mind was clearing. An instinctive connection with magic was established, and he understood, almost without thinking, how to use this force more effectively.

A smile contorted his face.

The rage in him became a catalyst, fuelling his magic. His emotions - anger, frustration, determination - mingled with his will. A new fireball began to form in his hands, but this time it was different. Denser. Brighter. It burned with an almost blinding intensity, a reddish glow tinged with black, as if it contained the pure hatred he felt for this monstrosity.

- Die...' he whispered, his voice trembling with emotion.

Foster threw the fireball with all the strength he could muster. It shot off at lightning speed, illuminating the forest with a sinister glow, before striking the creature in the chest. The impact was cataclysmic.

The ball exploded, but not like its predecessors. This time, the detonation literally ripped chunks out of the beast. Flesh and bone flew in all directions, shards of its skull and ribs piercing the surrounding trees. The air was saturated with the sickening smell of charred flesh and blood.

The beast's roar became an agonising scream, a mixture of pain and despair, before dying out in a grotesque gurgle. Its hind legs gave way and its massive body collapsed with a thud, shaking with uncontrolled spasms.

The fireball, amplified by Foster's anger, continued to burn the creature's carcass, consuming its flesh from within. The beast's torso hollowed out, revealing organs that liquefied under the intense heat. Its mouth, still half-open, let out a trickle of black slime mixed with blood, while its eyes literally melted in their sockets.

He slowly approached the corpse, his sword ready just in case. But the creature stopped moving. Its spasms died away, and there was absolute silence. Foster lowered his eyes, there was no pain or remorse in them.

Foster stood motionless, facing the still smouldering carcass of the creature. Charred fragments littered the ground around him, and the air was saturated with the atrocious smell of burnt flesh and blood. He looked at the remains of the beast without batting an eyelid, his icy eyes roaming over the spectacle of destruction he had created.

Just a cold satisfaction, a brutal acceptance of what he had achieved.

The members of his unit slowly approached, their faces marked by astonishment and a hint of apprehension.

- HAHAHA well done mate, welcome to the team! laughed Kael.
