Naruto: Aizen's Shadow in Konoha

Chapter 183: 183

"What happened?!"

Hearing the screams of battle outside, Ichiro felt a cold shiver run down his spine. Without hesitation, he rushed out of the tent, his mind already racing with grim possibilities.

"Captain!"

Before he could fully assess the situation, a frantic figure dashed toward him.

"Nozawa! What's going on out there? What's with the shouting?" Ichiro's voice was firm, though his heart was already braced for the worst.

"It's the Sand Shinobi! Captain, we've got reports of a vanguard—an estimated 2,000 Sand Shinobi—heading straight for us!"

A sharp hiss escaped Ichiro's lips as he sucked in a breath. Even with his suspicions confirmed, the weight of Nozawa's words struck hard.

A massive assault by Sand Shinobi.

He knew what this meant.

The war had officially begun.

Ichiro Fujiwara forced himself to rein in his emotions. There was no time for hesitation now. The Sand Shinobi's movements were bold, their vanguard alone numbering in the thousands. This wasn't just an attack—it was a declaration of intent, a statement of overwhelming force.

Yet, Ichiro understood their game. This wasn't merely about seizing territory; this was about crushing Konoha's resistance, one stronghold at a time. If this stronghold fell without warning the village...

The consequences would be catastrophic.

Ichiro's jaw tightened. The intelligence they held here was crucial. His mission was clear.

"Nozawa, listen carefully. I have a mission for you." His tone left no room for argument.

Nozawa straightened, his earlier panic replaced by grim focus. "What is it, Captain?"

"You are to gather the ninjas from the Intelligence Division and escort them out immediately. Protect them and the data at all costs!" Ichiro's voice was firm, resolute.

The color drained from Nozawa's face. "Captain, no! I'm not leaving you behind! If we die, we die together!"

"Fool!" Ichiro's sudden roar echoed across the camp, silencing Nozawa's protests.

Nozawa froze, his face pale, but the defiance in his eyes remained. He refused to turn away from the inevitable.

Ichiro's anger softened as he looked at the younger man. "Nozawa," he said quietly, "you're still young. You have your whole future ahead of you. Dying here serves no purpose. The mission, however—getting this intelligence back to the Hokage—is the difference between survival and defeat for Konoha. You know that better than anyone."

Nozawa clenched his fists, his throat tight. Ichiro's words cut deep, not out of cruelty but out of unyielding logic.

"I'll buy you time," Ichiro continued, his voice steady. "Take the others and run. That's an order."

Before Nozawa could muster another argument, Ichiro turned and sprinted toward the advancing Sand Shinobi forces, his back straight, his resolve unwavering.

"Captain..." Nozawa whispered, his voice breaking. He wiped at his eyes and swallowed the lump in his throat.

The next moment, his expression hardened.

"I won't let your sacrifice be in vain," he vowed, turning toward the Intelligence Division's quarters.

As Ichiro approached the battlefield, the full scale of the Sand Shinobi's assault came into view. Waves of shinobi advanced through the forest, their silhouettes lit by the cold glow of the moon.

...

In the early hours of the night, Sarutobi Hiruzen was roused from his sleep by an urgent knock on his door.

"Lord Hokage!" An Anbu agent entered swiftly, kneeling before the Third Hokage.

"What is it?" Hiruzen's voice was sharp, his instincts already on high alert.

"Urgent intelligence from the western forest outpost. Sand Shinobi have launched a large-scale assault. Our stronghold... it has been wiped out."

Hearing the grave report, Sarutobi Hiruzen's expression shifted dramatically. Without hesitation, he grabbed his robes and moved swiftly toward the Hokage building, his footsteps resolute.

"Inform Shimura Danzo, Utatane Koharu, and Mitokado Homura immediately! Have them meet me in my office for an emergency council session!" His voice carried authority, cutting through the tense silence as he addressed the Anbu operatives shadowing him.

"Yes, Lord Hokage!"

The three Anbu ninjas nodded and vanished in a blur of speed, leaving their formation to carry out his orders.

"Now," Hiruzen continued, turning to the intelligence officer who had delivered the news, "tell me everything about the situation in the Western Forest."

The officer nodded, keeping pace with the Hokage, relaying the details in a hushed but urgent tone.

By the time Hiruzen entered his office, the other members of Konoha's high council—Shimura Danzo, Utatane Koharu, and Mitokado Homura—had already gathered. The tension in the room was palpable.

"Sarutobi," Danzo began without preamble, his tone as sharp as the kunai strapped to his side, "the Sand Shinobi's attack on our stronghold is an overt declaration of war. We must retaliate immediately and with overwhelming force!"

"We'll retaliate," Hiruzen said calmly, lighting his pipe and taking a measured puff, "but we must first discuss our strategy."

"Strategy?!" Danzo's voice rose, his face twisting in impatience. "Give me 10,000 elite troops, and I'll crush the Sand Village within a month. Their forces will be eating sand for decades!"

Danzo's eagerness was obvious—an opportunity to gain glory and solidify his influence. But his words carried a dangerous overconfidence.

Hiruzen remained stoic, though the suggestion almost made him choke on the smoke he'd just inhaled.

"Danzo, calm yourself!" Utatane Koharu interjected, her tone cutting. "The sudden aggression by the Sand Village is no simple act. This isn't like the battles of the Second Shinobi World War. We must tread carefully."

Mitokado Homura nodded in agreement. "Exactly. The major powers are all on edge, watching the slightest movements in the ninja world. Sand's actions could trigger a chain reaction among the other nations. We need to gauge their responses before taking action."

Danzo's expression faltered, embarrassment flickering in his eyes as he processed their words.

"Enough speculation," Hiruzen declared, silencing the room with a wave of his hand. "Stay here and prepare contingency plans. We'll respond appropriately once we see how the other nations react."

...

Despite their measured approach, events quickly spiraled beyond Konoha's expectations.

The following day, Sand Village's forces, having secured territory in the western Fire Country, made a bold proclamation to the entire ninja world.

They accused Konoha of assassinating their Third Kazekage.

In their statement, the Sand claimed that their assault was not a mere act of aggression, but an act of revenge. As "compensation" for their perceived losses, they justified their occupation of Fire Country lands.

"It's only fair," their message concluded.

The fallout was immediate.

In Konoha, Hiruzen and the council reeled at the audacity of the claim. Danzo, for once, was speechless.

Meanwhile, in other major nations, the Sand's actions sent ripples through their leadership. Their boldness ignited a wave of militarization, as neighboring countries issued orders to prepare for conflict.
