Chapter 3: Legendary Losers
"When did you learn the leaf exercise, little Noboru?"
I hear a voice behind me. Turning around with a grumpy look, I see one of the four elders watching me. The man has a messy mix of brown and grey hair, a diamond-shaped face, hazel eyes, and an inviting presence.
Wearing a traditional brown haori which covered any signs of muscle he had he looked quite slender from my point of view.
This man was Sarutobi Tomura.
He is the elder in charge of the Sarutobi's business side of the family. This is a necessity when keeping such a clan afloat, which is impressive in itself. It is especially important in wartime, such as right now.
I'm sure having the leverage of a kage in his prime helps in a lot of his situations.
With sweat on my face, I have already prepared an explanation.
This a very THOUGHT OUT sentence.
"Dad did!"
'That's right, DAD DID BABY!'
There simply isn't a need to complicate it.
This should be a good enough excuse, seeing as I've watched my father doing this exercise before. Although it's not perfect, as I'm not sure how remembering something from a few years ago would work.
But hey if any words would work, this one surely would.
It's not like they would search my mind unless I start acting like a maniac.
"Really? That's good!" He says with a joyful smile. "When I was your age I didn't even start that exercise until I was six! Let me help you with that, you need someone to help you at the start."
He explains to which I just absently nod.
'Wait if he's an elder that means he's from the warring states period.'
Is this guy lying to me?
Learning the leaf exercise at six my foot!
Swiftly getting past my old words, I understood the important words of his sentence. Which included me needing help. Of course, I'm not even positive about the ins and outs of chakra control due to not remembering such niche things in the anime.
"Are you a ninja?" I ask out of curiosity to which he nods.
He proceeds to happily tell me the roles he played when the village first integrated the Sarutobi which was interesting.
Elder Tomura is currently a Tokubetsu Jounin who specialises in seals. Because of the nature of transporting goods, he decided to delve into securing such valuables, which makes a lot of sense seeing he's not combat-focused.
Even then a Tokubetsu Jounin is still a Chunin in combat, as I think he gets his rank from fuinjutsu.
On top of this, he is retired from Konoha's barrier team which manages the village's detection barrier.
"Alright, Noboru! Do you know the goal of the exercise?" He simply asks not expecting anything.
"To train my chakra control and patience," I answered which got a reaction.
Elder Tomura nodding to himself while in thought just hummed in delight soon realising that the kid in front of him was smarter than his age showed.
[Omniscient POV]
Back inside where the party was still going on, was Hiruzen and Biwako casually chatting. Noboru had gone outside for half an hour now and they were starting to finish up the dishes on the leaves.
"Biwako don't you think we should have another child right now? Noboru is three now..." Hiruzen says trailing off at the end. Biwako hearing this just squinted her eyes.
Yes, they agreed to have two children with an initial two-year gap. But the exhausting problem of Noboru happened which stressed out Biwako a bit.
One was meant to serve as the clan head and not leave the compound, while the other would join the academy.
"I delayed having another child because of how energetic Noboru is. Will our second child be as exhausting?"
She exasperatingly exaggerates.
Hiruzen chuckling at her words just ended up cuddling with her ignoring the rest of his clansmen who didn't look. Not wanting to delve into any of that type of drama of getting between the Hokage and his wife.
Thankfully before anything else occurred two shinobi entered the room.
*Creak*
These shinobi were still ragged and looked like they just come back from a mission. The untamed aura radiating from the two immediately deterred anyone from greeting them as they slowly made their way forward.
The man on the left had extremely pale skin and golden eyes. He was Orochimaru and had his armour while slightly damaged, faired much better than his teammate to his right, Tsunade.
The woman had straight flowing blond hair with her eyes looking extremely dark. Her armour was the most banged up as she looked pretty miserable. Her flowing hair was somewhat browned due to the lack of a shower.
Hiruzen looking up, seeing the two loses his smile and gains a resolute look.
He hated this scene.
Biwako who was sitting down, quickly got up and went up to the two of them. Giving them both a hug she started to pester the two to quickly clean themselves and eat. Next to her, the now standing-up Hiruzen looked at his banged-up students.
Fully tensed still ready for battle he slowly went up to the two.
"Calm down your chakras, there are children here." He softly murmurs, using his sensing ability to see the distanced clan members. "You guys are home now, safe and sound."
Tsunade who heard this flinched at her sensei's words.
"But-"
"Just relax." Hiruzen interrupts pulling Tsunade into a hug to soothe her. Initially rejecting this, she couldn't reject it as her body slowly relaxed.
'My students have done their job, now it's my turn. I can't sit back waiting for strategic advantages while my shinobi suffer.'
"It's about time the Kage's enter the battlefield. Take a good break in Konoha Orochimaru." He says in a monotone voice.
Orochimaru hearing this gained a shine in his eyes. Watching his sensei comfort his teammate who was on the verge of tears he didn't need such things. His mental state while maybe a little questionable wasn't anywhere close.
'I wish I could come along.' Orochimaru silently thought.
The man he respected the most.
His sensei and the person who showed him the true power of ninjutsu.
The Professor, Sarutobi Hiruzen.
Letting go of the hug, Hiruzen let some maids take Tsunade away and started to clean her up. While Orochimaru soon after left for his place to do who knows what. Completely ignoring the presence of the birthday occurring as the tense situation made them forget.
"Biwako I'm leaving."
Biwako who heard this got an incredulous look.
"It's your son's birthday! A-at least say goodbye..." She says getting quieter towards the end of her sentence. The professor nodding at his wife's words, quickly sensed where his son was which was next to another chakra signal.
Hiruzen seeing that his son was next to an elder got curious as he body flickered outside.
...
30 minutes have passed since Noboru went outside and he's listened to everything Elder Tomura knew about the leaf exercise. Such as keeping calm, feeling his chakra flow like water and needing to keep a steady stream of a certain amount to pull it off successfully.
It was a sort of trial and error which greatly benefitted both of them.
Noboru now in a meditative position had Tomura watching, using his own sensing ability to "see" how his chakra flowed. Slowly after a few adjustments, the little Sarutobi heir was able to get his chakra to move.
"It moved!"
"It sure did! Now just put it here." He explains pointing to his forehead.
Nodding at his words Noboru take a few deep breaths getting ready to do the exercise. Feeling the chakra in his body, Noboru started to imagine a stream of water going towards his head. This in turn slowly but surely moved his chakra.
Feeling the chakra move, he remembered Elder Tomura's words from before.
Putting the leaf in position, as the stream got into place he let go.
'Now imagine the leaf sticking to my head.'
The leaf which got into contact with the chakra, started to stick. Unfortunately, this only lasted up to two seconds as the concentrated amount of chakra started to fail. With the stream starting to stop completely.
"That's amazing! You were actually able to pull it off." The guy looked on in disbelief.
[POV: Noboru Sarutobi]
Opening up my eyes, the sensation of moving chakra faded as it sort of got blocked.
"That's weird, why did it stop?" I silently grumble.
"It's because of your control, don't worry this is like what we said before! Just keep on doing it and the more you improve. Getting the basics down immediately and being able to go straight into training is something to be proud of." He blabbers out to which I chuckle.
Attempting the leaf exercise a few more times it was mostly the same with my chakra cutting off randomly. Each time was around one to three seconds which was sometimes worse than the first attempt. With the fourth attempt, I saw my chakra stream being noticeably smaller which in turn didn't even let the leaf stick.
Feeling my body start to tire it was probably best I stop for now.
"Oh? What's this." I hear a familiar voice talk.
Turning around I see my father clad in his armour looking like he's ready to fight anybody that gets in front of him.
"I greet the Hokage." Elder Tomura respectly bowed to which Hiruzen nodded. "Noboru was able to do the leaf exercise for a couple seconds!"
"Really!" He exclaims more excited than questioning.
There was no reason to lie in this situation, such things would be found out anyway. Looking at my father he comes up to me and grabs me into a bear hug which I reciprocated.
"Hi, papa!" I exclaim happily.
But for some reason, I started to get a bad feeling he started to speak up.
"Papa is really proud of you Noboru," Hiruzen says catching me off-guard. Feeling his hand rub my hair energetically there was nothing I could do to escape his grasp. "I'm going to be away for a while alright, train hard so you can protect your mother alright?"
Hearing this I swiftly nodded and gave a serious look.
Or as serious an expression as a three-year-old could give at this point.
"I protect mum!" I shout.
Smiling at my words, he gives my hair a last scramble as he disappears from my sight instantly.
'It must have been the [Body Flicker]!' My thoughts wandered off to probably one of the first ninjutsu I would want to master fully before anything else. The sheer versatility of it is just as outrageous as ninjutsu's come.
Other than giving me the green light to train in front of Elder Tomura, this presents another opportunity.
The choice to train as hard as I can without holding back.
To protect my mother of course!
Also, when is Asuma gonna be born, it's been more than 2 years and I'm not sure of the age difference. Biwako's belly ain't really looking any bigger since the last time I've seen her.
Ignoring that it was now time to train.
Unknown to myself, because of this split decision to train. My chance of meeting Tsunade who was in the compound was now gone. Which deeply saddened me as it was my birthday and she didn't even say hi.
Maybe she was stressed and left...
After that situation, another year passed as my progress of constantly using the leaf exercise, stamina training and weird meat accelerated my body's growth. I only stayed in the compound and never left due to focusing on my training.
I was now able to do the leaf exercise for over four minutes at a time. While being able to do such things three times a day.
Unfortunately, no weapons were allowed during training and I've only been learning basic taijutsu katas.
At this point in time, my mother's belly was actually growing in size so it should be Asuma or maybe a different sibling depending on what changes I might have had to this world.
I'm not stupid enough to let cannon happen and keeping the hidden leaf the undisputed strongest is in my best interest. So one of the plans I had to get more connections throughout Konoha was undoubtedly to make them my teacher in some capacity.
"Elder I want to learn sword from White Fang!" I ask determined.
The man looking at me unsure just paused.
