Chapter 16: In the Claws of the Night
The silence weighed heavily in the room where Naruto found himself. The darkness of the night had gradually enveloped the place, and the spicy smell of cold food continued to tickle his nostrils, making him increasingly restless. His stomach growled, but he didn't have the luxury to worry about it. He needed to get out of there. The prolonged absence of the mysterious girl was an opportunity he couldn't ignore.
After one last look around, Naruto cautiously opened the door. The cold night air rushed into the room, accompanied by a eerie breeze that seemed to whisper warnings. He ventured into the garden he had observed earlier through the window. The place was even more sinister than he had imagined. The twisted trees cast grotesque shadows under the faint light of a crescent moon. Every breath of wind made the leaves shiver, adding a oppressive note to the already charged atmosphere.
Naruto advanced cautiously, his senses on high alert. Every crack of a branch under his feet, every rustle of the bushes around him made him nervous. "I have to get out of here at all costs," he told himself, quickening his pace.
He soon started to run, his breathing becoming faster as adrenaline surged within him. Yet, a strange unease crept into his mind. Something was not right. He had this unpleasant feeling of being watched. Before he could analyze this impression, a murderous intent pierced the air, icy and palpable.
A silvery flash emerged from the void. Naruto instinctively turned his head, narrowly dodging a kunai heading straight for his eye. A thin and burning cut appeared on his cheek, a drop of blood trickling down his skin. Out of breath, he searched for the source of the attack, but the dense darkness gave him no clue.
Second and third kunai sprang forth, swift as lightning. Naruto dove to the side, grabbing a fallen branch on the ground to block the third projectile. The kunai thudded into the wood with a dull sound. Without wasting time, Naruto rushed behind a nearby tree, using the trunk as cover.
"Who are you?" he shouted, his voice hoarse, his breath uneven. The echo of his question faded into the darkness. No answer, only the heavy and oppressive silence.
Then, footsteps. They echoed faintly, like a slowly approaching threat, but they seemed to come from all directions at once. Naruto tightened his grip on the branch reinforced by the kunai, ready to defend himself. But before he could react, a sharp pain pierced his left arm. He looked down to see a kunai deeply embedded in his flesh.
"Impossible..." he murmured. The attack came from behind, while the footsteps came from in front of him. Was he facing one enemy or multiple? He tore the kunai from his arm with a groan of pain, his blood streaming over his fingers.
A thick and cold mist began to rise, enveloping the surroundings. The already limited visibility decreased even further. "This is bad," Naruto thought, his mind desperately seeking a strategy. He took to the heights, leaping onto a massive tree branch, hoping for a better vantage point. But the dense fog seemed to mock his efforts, obscuring everything around him.
"You want to play," he yelled into the void. "Come face me, coward!"
A light, almost mocking laughter echoed in the mist. A cold, feminine voice rose: "You entered my playground, Naruto Uzumaki. But I warn you, this is not a game you will win."
Naruto felt a shiver run down his spine. He gritted his teeth, holding his improvised weapon firmly. A gust of wind made the branches tremble, and suddenly, he saw her: an agile and masked figure leaping from tree to tree. Before he could aim at her, she vanished, leaving behind only a distant laughter.
He closed his eyes for a second to calm his mind. "Focus. It's like against Neji. Sense her intention before moving."
A movement to his left. He turned abruptly, striking with the branch, but only found emptiness. A new attack sprang from his right. Naruto rolled on the ground, narrowly avoiding a blade that could have pierced him. The pain from his injured arm slowed him down, but he refused to give in.
He decided to use Shadow Clone Jutsu, forming a clone in an unknown direction hoping to confuse his opponent. A figure emerged from the mist to attack the clone, but before Naruto could exploit this opening, she disappeared again into the mist, like an elusive ghost.
"This girl is toying with me," he realized, his breath ragged. His patience was quickly wearing thin. "Show yourself!" he shouted, frustration evident in his voice.
The voice resonated again, this time closer. "Show me that you are worthy. Prove to me that you are deserving of what they say about you, Jinchūriki."
He froze, hearing her utter that word. "She knows about Kurama..."
The intensity of the battle suddenly escalated. Shurikens flew in his direction, and Naruto dodged by performing a series of backflips. But his breath was getting short, and his injured arm was throbbing more and more. Once again, he tried to locate the silhouette in the mist, but she always seemed to have one step ahead.
Then, she appeared, a woman with a white mask in front of him. A young woman with eyes shining with determination. Naruto leaped forward to attack her, but she effortlessly parried his blow with an almost insolent elegance.
"Not bad," she said, stepping back slightly. "But if that's all you've got, you'll die here."
Naruto, panting, clenched his fists. "I won't die before saving my friends. And certainly not at your hands!"
She smiled behind her mask, the intensity of her aura increasing even more. "Then show me what you're made of, Naruto Uzumaki."
The battle had only just begun.
