Chapter 34: Unexpected Stroll
Naruto walked slowly through the streets of Konoha, enjoying the cool evening air after a long day. Villagers bustled around him, and while he was used to the liveliness, he couldn't help but feel a little like a stranger after being away for so long.
Turning a corner, he spotted a familiar figure: Ino. She was clearly returning from a mission, a small bag slung over her shoulder and her blonde hair slightly disheveled. When she saw him, her face lit up immediately, and she quickened her pace to catch up with him.
"Naruto!" she called out cheerfully.
Naruto slowed down to wait for her, a smile spreading across his face. "Hey, Ino. Back from a mission, huh?"
Ino nodded. "Yeah, and I'm exhausted. But what about you? What are you doing out at this hour?"
"Oh, just heading home after talking with Tsunade. Nothing special."
They continued walking side by side, chatting about random things. Ino shared a few funny anecdotes from her mission, making Naruto laugh out loud several times. However, after a while, he grew quiet, watching her intently as they walked.
Noticing his gaze, Ino turned her head toward him, slightly flustered. "What? Why are you looking at me like that?" she asked, frowning slightly. "Do I have something on my face or what?"
Naruto squinted, pretending to think deeply, before replying with a smirk, "No, nothing. But… maybe you've gotten even prettier since the last time I was here."
Ino blushed instantly, turning her head away and crossing her arms. "Idiot," she muttered, a mix of embarrassment and fondness in her voice.
Naruto burst out laughing, his voice echoing through the street. "Seriously, you should see your face right now. You look like a tomato, Ino!"
"Stop it!" she shot back, giving him a mock glare before quickening her pace.
Still laughing, Naruto caught up to her in a few steps. "Come on, I'm just teasing! But thanks for making me smile—it's been a while."
They walked in silence for a while after that, but it was a comfortable, almost comforting silence. They simply enjoyed each other's presence.
Not far away, Sakura was heading quickly toward Tsunade's office. She had been summoned for a last-minute report, and her mind was entirely focused on what she would say to the Hokage.
However, as if driven by instinct, she turned her head while passing an adjacent street. Her eyes fell on a scene she didn't expect to see: Naruto and Ino walking side by side. Naruto was laughing, and Ino was smiling, a blush still visible on her cheeks.
Sakura felt a strange pang in her chest. An unfamiliar sensation washed over her. Was it… jealousy? Worry? She wasn't sure, but she didn't like the way it made her feel.
"What's wrong with me…?" she murmured, shaking her head as if to dispel the thoughts.
She turned away and continued on her way to Tsunade's office, her steps a little faster than before.
Arriving at the office, Sakura knocked softly before entering. Tsunade was behind her desk as usual, and Shizune stood nearby with a stack of documents in her arms.
"Ah, Sakura, there you are," Tsunade said without looking up from her work.
Shizune, however, glanced at Sakura, noticing her slightly troubled expression.
"Something wrong, Sakura?" she asked with a teasing smile.
Sakura blinked, caught off guard by the question. "Huh? No, nothing at all. Why?"
Shizune shrugged, her smile widening. "Oh, I don't know… Maybe because you seem a little distracted? Did you see something interesting on your way here?"
Sakura felt her cheeks warm slightly. "It's nothing, Shizune. Stop saying silly things."
Tsunade finally looked up, intrigued. "What's going on here?"
"Nothing!" Sakura quickly replied, turning toward the Hokage to avoid prolonging the conversation.
Tsunade raised an eyebrow but didn't press further. She simply gestured to a stack of documents on her desk. "Alright, let's get to it. Here's what I need you to review."
Meanwhile, Naruto and Ino reached Naruto's house.
"Thanks for the company, Ino," Naruto said, stopping in front of the door.
"No problem," she replied with a smile. "It's good to see you again, Naruto."
Naruto gave her a wink. "See you tomorrow, maybe?"
Ino nodded before walking away, a faint smile still on her lips.
Naruto sighed as he entered his house, wondering if his life would ever return to normal. But something told him it would never quite be the same.
