Chapter 78: Chapter 78: Dust Settles, Return to the Village
Chiyo passed away with the burden of infamy, while Rasa, as in the original story, became the Fourth Kazekage.
The war between Konohagakure and Sunagakure officially came to an end.
Uchiha Mirai and Namikaze Minato led the frontline shinobi back to Konohagakure. Upon their return, they were once again greeted with cheers and celebration from the villagers.
Unlike the previous victory against Kumogakure, this time, Mirai was undeniably the center of attention. His performance on the Sunagakure battlefield had become widely known. Winning two consecutive wars and securing decisive victories for the village elevated him to the status of a hero in the eyes of the people.
"Is that Mirai-sama? Truly a young hero! To have such strength at his age is incredible!"
"He's so handsome! I'd love to marry someone like him!"
"As expected of the Uchiha Clan—what a noble shinobi family! The power of the Sharingan is simply amazing."
"Thanks to Mirai-sama, the war ended much sooner than it would have otherwise."
"Exactly! Seeing the new generation of shinobi stepping up to protect the village is so reassuring."
The villagers spared no praise, and as a result, their perception of the Uchiha Clan had also improved significantly.
Among the shinobi, Mirai's reputation reached new heights as well. After all, they had witnessed firsthand the terrifying power he wielded.
Watching the jubilant crowd, Minato couldn't help but remark, "Mirai, your popularity is off the charts!"
Mirai shrugged, a bit helpless. "I've tried to keep a low profile, but somehow, I still end up standing out."
Minato gave him a long look, momentarily at a loss for words. After a pause, he finally said,
"Mirai, I'll go report to Hokage first. Let's grab a meal together sometime soon."
Mirai waved casually. "If you're treating, I'm in."
...
Hokage's Office
After hearing Minato's report, Hiruzen Sarutobi frowned deeply, a wave of indescribable frustration washing over him.
In his calculations, Mirai's constant battles should have drastically reduced the power of his Mangekyō Sharingan. Yet, contrary to expectations, Mirai had even used Susanoo during the war and seemed none the worse for wear.
"Was the intensity too low?"
"Looks like I'll need to send him to another battlefield," Hiruzen muttered to himself. He now regretted letting Mirai grow unchecked. But who could have predicted that a mere genin fresh out of the Academy would rise to such heights in just over a year?
At that moment, the office door was slammed open.
Danzo stormed in, seething with rage. "Hiruzen, you've heard about Uchiha Mirai's Mangekyō Sharingan abilities, haven't you?"
Hiruzen glanced at the furious Danzo and replied curtly, "I've got a rough idea. What of it?"
"What of it?!" Danzo laughed angrily. "He can use Rasa's Magnet Release Kekkei Genkai! This means his Mangekyō Sharingan can replicate Kekkei Genkai!"
Hiruzen, growing impatient, asked, "And your point is?"
Danzo sneered coldly. "If he can replicate Kekkei Genkai, copying clan secrets is probably no problem for him either!"
Pausing for effect, Danzo continued, "The rogue who attacked my 'Root' base before used the techniques of the Nara and Akimichi clans. Now that I think about it, it must have been that bastard Uchiha Mirai!"
The revelation only stoked Danzo's fury. He had been forced into conflicts with the Nara and Akimichi clans over the incident, and now it turned out Mirai was the culprit all along.
"That bastard is too dangerous!"
"Danzo, there's no point dredging up the past," Hiruzen said dismissively. "Let it go."
Danzo clenched his fists. "Let it go? Mirai's actions cannot be forgiven!"
Hiruzen waved his hand wearily. "Fine, fine. Do whatever you like. Go ahead and arrest him yourself."
Danzo froze.
His outburst had been meant to vent his anger, confronting Mirai directly was another matter entirely. The last time he'd tried, Mirai had nearly killed him.
"What's your plan, Hiruzen?" Danzo pressed, refusing to let the issue drop. "Are you just going to let that brat run rampant?"
Hiruzen sighed. "I plan to send him to the Kirigakure battlefield. As long as he keeps fighting, the Mangekyō Sharingan will eventually lead to blindness."
Hearing this, Danzo's expression remained unsatisfied. "Can't we use public opinion to tarnish his reputation?"
Hiruzen rolled his eyes at him. "His popularity is at its peak after this victory. If you try to smear him now, are you out of your mind?"
The room fell into silence.
For the first time in their years of leadership, both men found themselves so powerless. They had weathered countless storms together, but now, a single young shinobi had pushed them to their limits.
Back at the Uchiha compound, Mirai found the area eerily quiet. After asking around, he learned that following his deployment to the Sunagakure battlefield, Kirigakure had declared war on Konohagakure. Most of the Uchiha Clan's shinobi, including Fugaku had been sent to the frontlines.
The situation on the Kirigakure battlefield was reportedly grim, with many Uchiha losing their lives.
Mirai wasn't surprised. Such an opportunity to weaken the Uchiha wouldn't be wasted by Hiruzen and Danzo.
Returning to his house, he glanced at the white snake coiled in the corner and snorted.
Sitting cross-legged in the living room, he called out, "Orochimaru, showing up uninvited isn't exactly polite."
As his words fell, Orochimaru appeared across from him. "Mirai-kun, congratulations on another impressive achievement. You've truly become a hero in the village now."
Ignoring the compliment, Mirai got straight to the point. "Did you come to accept my proposal?"
Orochimaru paused, then nodded slowly. "If you can deliver as promised, I'll agree to your terms."
"I came to warn you—Danzo recently had me perform a surgery. He now possesses both Hashirama's cells and Uchiha Sharingan."
