Chapter 128 – Cut short plan

.

In Konoha, the 7th Hokage is looking through the window of his office, in anticipation of something. Walking in comes the 6th Hokage, Kakashi Hatake. Seeing his former student in this position, he guesses what is on his mind and takes this last chance to discuss it.

"It's today that the ninjas of Kiri get on the way." says Kakashi, to which the Hokage replies with a nod after turning around. "You seem oddly enthusiastic about it. Is it because it implies a meeting with Sakitsuki Otsutsuki?"

"Well… She's a friendly Otsutsuki." Naruto justifies his mood. "It's what I've been waiting to meet since we fought Momoshiki, or maybe even since we sealed Kaguya. I can't let such a diplomatic relation slip away. It's just upsetting that this comes in a context where we have to protect her from another of her clan who's just as stubborn as the others."

"About that…" Kakashi puts this fact in doubt. "You say it like you have to protect the good one from the evil one. But is it really how it is or just how Kiri presents it?"

"What? Why are you asking that?" Naruto is confused by his sensei's mistrustful interrogation. "Why would you even question that? "

"Listen, Naruto, I've lived in an era where nations weren't as friendly with each other as they are today." explains the masked ninja. "And so did the Mizukage. How we saw each other back in the day, especially for Kiri and Konoha, has an undeniable impact on the way elders of both villages think nowadays. This is why the perspective of the elder's council is important in decisions like this. Yet this time, you didn't even ask for our advice."

"Come on, sensei!" The Hokage defends himself. "Is that a real complaint? The council is just Shizune, Shikamaru and you. Y'all trust me enough for this."

"We sure do. But don't forget that we are your institution, and the Union isn't." Kakashi argues. "As long as the situation with the daimyo's family and belongings doesn't evolve, so long as we still are in a feudal system, we, the council, are the mediators of the village. Just as much as we are Sasuke's actual superiors, and not you."

Naruto doesn't have an answer for this. For some reason, even though he always knew that, it doesn't feel right with his vision of diplomacy. But he doesn't let these thoughts bother him too much. It may just be Oshio and Kakumei's philosophy that indirectly affected him. He just sighs and looks away.

"Yeah, anyway, this situation doesn't need a second opinion." he says to Kakashi. "What I was told is that a threatening celestial wants to capture Sakitsuki Otsutsuki, who's a valuable ally to us. And facts are that she really is. She helped in revealing and concluding the case of the Chimera. And the attack on Kiri was the doing of that other celestial. He was there for Sakitsuki and left without her."

"I can't deny that. But nothing proves that he'll come back." Kakashi argues again. "Maybe it is the fact that Sakitsuki Otsutsuki comes to you that will lure him back. They could be using you to cause what they want you to stop." explains the Hokage, unknowingly guessing the exact intention of Tsubai Minamoto.

"This can't be." Naruto confidently answers. "Last time, this guy ran away because he knew I was coming. Considering this, what you say just wouldn't make sense."

"Hm… You must be right then." Kakashi accepts. "Maybe your impact on the Mizukage is more important than I thought. This enemy certainly needs to be stopped. But still, hearing Sakitsuki's version would clear everything."

"That's why I'm having her brought to us." Naruto concludes. "I'll receive them at the shore as soon as their boat sets sail in this land."

Since there's nothing more Kakashi has to say about this, he stays quiet. And so does Naruto who just after a little moment, is led from the Otsutsuki to Sasuke's quest in his train of thought.

"Any news about Sasuke?" he asks Kakashi.

"Hm? No. Nothing new since his message telling he's out for a long time looking for a certain planet." the 6th Hokage replies. "Why?"

"Well… he didn't say anything about Boruto in his message." Naruto explains his worries. "I doubt that Sasuke would bring him along on this kind of quest. But it's been a while and Boruto hasn't returned. And he wasn't at Tokiwa's funeral either. This must mean that he's not available. But where is he?"

"Is it really impossible that Sasuke just brought him along?" Kakashi suggests.

"From what he wrote in his message, I assume this is the kind of thing Sasuke better do alone." the Hokage goes on. "I know nothing bad happened to Boruto, otherwise I'd be aware. But still, I need confirmation or something."

Unable to provide an answer to the Hokage's interrogations, Kakashi steps further in the room and walks around a bit while thinking. He also lets his thoughts get on and thinks of someone who should be mostly concerned by Kiri's case.

"Is Takeshi Minamoto going to be part of Sakitsuki Otsutsuki's escort squad?" he asks, about a young prodigy he once trained with. "I just thought about him because, you know, Boruto used to pursue him as a rival."

"Yeah, I remember that." answers Naruto, amused by this flashback. "Takeshi will probably be there… And that rivalry has probably turned around nowadays. Now the question is: Does Takeshi stand a chance against Boruto today?"

"You know I taught this kid." Kakashi enthusiastically answers. "I know how talented he is. It took him just a few days to appropriate my best jutsu as his own. And he's grown a lot since then. He's grown most mysteriously… He's earned skills that we still can't explain."

"… And he's been through a lot this last year…" Naruto says compassionately. "He seems to be pretty close to Sakitsuk. He solved the Chimera's case with her, and was almost on his own to fight the invading Otsutsuki… I'll try to speak with him, and Tsubai… With Tokiwa's passing, all this must feel very personal to them."

Kakashi looks out the window and thinks of this last sentence. Kiri's plan might just as well have been elaborated by one of these two, seeking revenge. In any case, it will once again be up to Naruto to solve this.

.

The next morning, the team of Kiri has been on the sea for nearly a day and will likely arrive next evening. However, they've sailed away without the main person of interest: Sakitsuki. When Takeshi woke up still in wonderment for how he fell asleep the day before, he was alone. Saki left without any goodbye despite her promise and call of resolve.

Since they couldn't find her, Tsubai, Kokoro, Kaori, Yukiko, Takeshi and the other dozens of ninjas selected to be on the escort squad had to leave without her. The boat was set to go and they couldn't hold it back. They've now been on the sea a whole day, left with only hope that she comes back in time.

Tsubai, standing on the dock with Kokoro, doesn't have much faith in Sakitsuki. He considers this a betrayal and tries to think of a way to still get Naruto to find and fight Hyakki Otsutsuki even without their bait. Lying on the ground on top of the boat is Takeshi.

After waking up yesterday, he immediately went running to find Saki and circled the land several times before giving up. He doesn't feel deceived, unlike the others, as he is the only one who knows what she promised. Instead, he is worried. It could be that Hyakki came back already and took her away without them knowing…

No. This can't be. The reason they've sailed away now is because they have at least a day left before he returns. After the confession Saki made to him, Takeshi can't imagine that she lied at any point. Next to where he's lying, Kaori comes and sits with him. She looks to the deep sea in the distance and starts a conversation.

"So… We're just hoping that she comes back before we get there?" asks the kunoichi. "What are we gonna look like to the Hokage if we arrive without her?"

Takeshi doesn't answer. He just looks at his teammate and thinks of her question.

"Staying there is pointless." Kaori adds. "It's true we didn't have any confirmation that she'd comply with our plan, but you seemed pretty confident about it last morning… Maybe you should go look for her."

"No use…" Takeshi replies. "I can't sense her chakra anywhere nearby. And I already spent the first hour yesterday looking for her… She's probably not on this planet anymore. She flew back to the stars…"

Kaori just sadly stares at her teammate and doesn't dare say a thing. What he said sounds so romantic yet so desperate. Everything about Takeshi, everything he says, everything that happens to him, just seems so sad lately. For a moment, she feels like she misses the old him. The one she always blamed for his arrogance and egoism.

Thankfully, there will always be at least a ray of light in this dark life. For just a second Takeshi perceives the figure of the Daitengu again. The curse of time stands on top of the boat's bow, back to the sea, and looks at Takeshi before raising his eyes toward the sky, indicating to the Minamoto that he should follow his gaze.

Up in the sky she stands. Sakitsuki has returned. Only Takeshi noticed her for now, but the first thing she does after her arrival forces everyone's acknowledgement.

Suiton – Gyakuryu (Counter-current)

Using Water release, she reverses the stream around the boat to negate its progression and and make it stand still. It takes just a few seconds for everyone to notice and wonder about what is happening. Kaori, standing next to Takeshi who's the only one not looking down to the sea but up to the sky, follows his gaze and is first to alert the others.

"There she is!" she exclaims, happy to see Saki before questioning her actions. "What are you doing?"

"Yeah! The hell you think you're up to?" Tsubai yells louder in order to be heard by everyone.

He leaps up to where Kaori and Takeshi are, followed by Kokoro and Yukiko. Sakitsuki doesn't answer the question. She just slowly goes down to the boat, to Takeshi. Face to face with her lover, she lets him stare into her golden eyes for a moment before speaking.

"I'm sorry, but I can't accept a meeting with Naruto Uzumaki anymore." she declares, much to Takeshi's confusion. "It would mean to betray my clan, my kind, my world. I don't have the intention to turn against my mistress, the Ryu Shinsen, or Hyakki-sama. I can't betray the path of my ancestors."

Takeshi just stands agape, and unsettled. This doesn't sound like what she last told him. Did she have a realization during the night? Is she really giving up on him, even after her confession? Or did something happen to pressure her into this change of heart?

"We knew you'd say that!" Tsubai yells at her. "We're going anyway. We won't stop unless we're done with that god of destruction. I'll go by foot and get Naruto here on my own if I have to. It's too late for you to choose. It's your clan or our world now."

"Tsubai, do you even think before speaking?" Sakitsuki yells at him, upset.

"And you, Saki?" Takeshi asks to get her attention, feeling deceived now. "Did you?" he adds, referring to her private confession.

Startled by this remark, Saki sadly stares at him in silence. Kokoro witnessing the scene, can very clearly sense a consciously reciprocal love between these two thanks to her tengu's power. This raises so many questions, but one is most important, given the situation.

"Why did you come back then?" Kokoro asks the young goddess, hoping to ring a bell. "You could have left this world now. Did you need to say goodbye?"

Sakitsuki, without moving her golden eyes, gazes at Kokoro and her students, and sighs. Takeshi, curious about this question, insists.

"Answer, Saki." he says. "Why did you change your mind? Did you just forget about last night?"

"I know I gave you hope." she answers with a sorry voice. "I gave myself mindless hope as well. But… I can't live this story. I can't stay in this world any longer… I cannot fight for it against my own kind…"

Takeshi just squints, suspicious of this sudden change of mind. Inside of him, all his tengu are trying to find reason in the goddess' choice. Tentoki scratches his chin with his long pointy fingers, guessing that they have to be missing an information.

"There's obviously something else." he suggests. "Something she is not saying. Something that changed between the other day and now."

"It is fear." Makura deduces, clearly able to sense this emotion having a new motive in Sakitsuki.

In reality, after the unexpected visit of her mistress, the golden-eyed goddess hurried herself to a safer place and wasted her time attempting to summon her mistress again. She pointlessly yelled out the name of the goddess of creation in the high atmosphere, but her calls were ignored.

Saki was given a chance to speak and wasted it. It was too late to get Naobi-sama's presence or attention. Out of options, desperate by this sudden but so timid intervention, Sakitsuki rushed as fast as possible back to Ashihara. She can't use any space-time jutsu that would let her do the distance in a millisecond. Instead, all she could do is use her eye's rainbow light as a bridge through space.

It was 11 light years to cross between the red divine aster and the ninja world. Fortunately, her flash transportation has the particularity of going initially at the absolute speed of light, but also to double its speed every hour in the emptiness of space. By this means, she could make this unreal distance in just 17 hours. Which is what she intended to do.

However, almost halfway there, she noticed that the god of destruction was set on the move. Being just an hour or so away from her destination, she understood that going this way would be pointless. It would leave Earth to the mercy of Hyakki who wouldn't cross paths with her on the way either.

Therefore, she decided to turn around and use her momentum to get back where she came from. Back to Earth, it is not to fight as she promised that she is here now. It is to stop everything. Her mistress' visit made her lose all hope and courage. All she wants to do now is at least let the ones she knows on Earth be spared.

Takeshi can, just as much as Fear itself, sense the strength of the emotion that demotivated Saki. Unaware of what occupies his beloved's mind, he questions her in all honesty.

"What are you afraid of?" he asks, to her blatant surprise.

Feeling figured out by the last tengu's power, her hands tremble as she lays them on Takeshi's shoulders and lets her feet touch the ground. Knowing that he won't let go without an answer, she admits the truth.

"I… received a visit." she tells him in a quiet tone. "I can't risk bringing this to you anymore. Your plan can't work. If you go on… If I stay here, and if you fight for me, you'll stand no chance. Someone I didn't want to get involved in this has manifested herself. If she comes here with Hyakki-sama, and if she takes part in the battle or even just takes action in the slightest way… Even Naruto Uzumaki wouldn't be of any help to you."

Takeshi, rather confused by the fearful speech of the goddess, stays doubtful. Behind him, Kaori and Yukiko wait to know what was just said. Tsubai, however, takes a few steps forward to the border of the boat and looks at the ocean, in the distance.

"Takeshi…" he warns his son with a worried voice.

Takeshi looks back, sees the look on his father's face and follows his gaze. There, he senses something similar to what took him by surprise once before. A white translucent chakra shape appears in space.

Joshi Tenso

Inside the shape, the god of destruction takes form, materializing his body on Earth. Sakitsuki slowly turns around and all the ninjas on the boat go to the border to see who just appeared. Hyakki Otsutsuki tilts his head, looking at the boat.

"Oh? Y'all going on a trip?" he ironically says.

On the boat, Takeshi, Kokoro and everyone else stand still, like moving a muscle would instantly cause their death. They've been preparing for this exact moment a long time, but now that he's back, the unique sensation of powerlessness takes away all their resolve. For Tsubai Minamoto however, there is nothing worse that could happen to him that didn't already happen.

The man who planned it all breathes in and stares right at the one he was expecting. He sure is early. So early that they didn't even get to Naruto yet. That he arrives before they reach the land of Fire was unplanned, but it honestly only makes a slight change to the plan, in his belief.

Since no one else on the boat moves, Sakitsuki goes ahead. Hyakki is standing still on the water's surface. He's certainly expecting a greeting or a reception, so she proceeds. She first flies down and then goes on a straight line toward him at sea level.

Tsubai confidently jumps down the boat to stay close by. Takeshi, seeing his father's absurd move, has no choice but to follow. Sojobo made him understand one thing yesterday. If Sakitsuki is his everything, then he has to fight for her. And if she is the only one he can save, it means Tsubai will have to go as well. Motivated by the will to preserve both the one he loves and his father, he jumps down the boat and stays by Tsubai's side.

As she walks toward the visitor, Sakitsuki thinks of what she expected. Hyakki is here alone. She doesn't know what it means, but she better end this as soon as possible. Face to face with him, she speaks after a noble greeting.

"Hyakki-sama… I agree to follow you." she says, which upsets Takeshi who doesn't seem to see a problem with the initial plan so far. "I was waiting for you, in fact. No harm to this world is needed. I will return to Ashihara."

"… You comply, you say?" the god of youth answers doubtfully. "What about these guys behind you? Do they?"

The celestial looks over Sakitsuki's shoulder with his damaged eyes, toward the two Minamoto. To motivate his son, Tsubai pushes Takeshi forward lightly. With this gentle move, he incites him to step in. The ninja in black hatefully stares at the one who taught him defeat and lets this feeling take over.

Full of determination, he walks forward and slowly joins Saki's side. Seeing this behind her, she clenches her teeth. The satisfied look she notices on the god of destruction's face makes it frustrating.

"What they do doesn't matter!" she yells before bowing down. "Please, Hyakki-sama! I beg you! Just take me home and leave these humans behind!"

"Come on, goldie… you wouldn't want to upset your human love pet, would you?" Hyakki answers, staring at Takeshi before bending over to talk with Saki. "Are you trying to save me, or them?"

Saki and Takeshi both make confused faces. Behind Tsubai, Kokoro, Kaori and others are starting to come down the boat as well, waiting to see what will happen. Hyakki, seeing that everyone is waiting on him, decides to break the suspense.

"Let me tell you… Sakitsuki." he starts. "I'm not here so early, unaware. I was told what they have planned."

To this announcement, the young goddess gulps down, afraid of what Hyakki might do next. It seems that, most of all, he won't abandon the opportunity to fight Kiri's forces again. She can't tell if there is a true motivation or if it's just out of pure madness, but one thing she can tell. There is only one way for him to make a fight on Earth safe for himself in the present context.

"Thing is… I know that this little troop was thinking of bringing you to the yellow fox." the god of youth goes on. ""Not sure if you complied with that, because that would have been pretty nasty, but you're here now anyway. And so are they, and so am I. If I start a fight and attempt to make it worth the fun, it will alert that bastard and it'll end up just like last time. Except now, I can't return to Yamitsuki-sama empty handed. So, by offering to follow me and avoiding any battle, one could think that you're trying to save me from the fox. Should I thank you for that? No. Because I know it's not me you're trying to save, but them. If the fox doesn't get involved, I'll be free to play with those poor ninjas as I wish, just like last time… And I know you know just how I could keep him away."

Sakitsuki starts to breathe heavily, in anguish because of how much the god of destruction emphasizes the situation.

"Unfortunately for your fragile little hopes, as by order of the Ryu Shinsen, I'm not even allowed to do this on my own."

"Please… Hyakki-sama. Don't…" Sakitsuki begs once more, but is abruptly interrupted by the devilish god who takes pleasure in crushing her hopes.

"NAOBI-SAMA!" he screams with his arms spread wide open, facing the sky dramatically.

All the present ninjas look at each other confusingly. Most of them don't even know this name. Takeshi, however, heard it before. His question is: What did Hyakki hope to cause with such a powerful call? And he finds his answer unfortunately soon.

Izunome

Wherever her name is summoned, the goddess of creation hears it. And wherever it may be in this vast universe, she shall answer this call by her presence, with this jutsu that allows her to appear instantly anywhere in the boundaries of a universe. High in the sky above them, she floats and looks down. The goddess of creation. Naobi Otsutsuki.

Sakitsuki sees her appear, and stays inclined, trembling in despair, knowing what this implies. She can now only watch in silence with her mistress as Hyakki has his fun with the present humans. Tsubai, Takeshi, and a few others in the ninja crowd who are able to sense natural energy are all flabbergasted by the chakra they feel.

From just the feeling, Takeshi guesses what Sakitsuki was trying to avoid until now. Yet, he can't really fear it as much as her. The person he sees in the sky seems oddly gentle. A pale woman with a short figure and a very childish appearance that doesn't fit her visible wisdom at all. She doesn't emit the same dark energy as Hyakki. It is as if, just by her chakra, you could tell that this goddess would only act for the greater good.

Unfortunately, it seems in this situation that the greater good is not on their side. Naobi Otsutsuki analyzes the scene. She sees the boat's direction, the ninjas, and her pupil. With her Byakugan, she gazes at where the boat must have been headed to, and sighs.

"So I see. This is how Naruto Uzumaki was expected to get involved." she proclaims. "My presence will indeed serve its purpose."

Kaori and Yukiko look at each other a bit confused. They don't have the sensory ability to feel the mystical energy of this woman, and can't understand how meaningful these words were. Naobi looks down at her student.

"Sakitsuki, rise." she asks, to which Saki immediately answers by standing and looking up to the sky. "Hyakki is here to bring you back to your domain, on Ashihara. Luckily for you, I was allowed by Yamitsuki to fix your mistakes, but this only after Hyakki's mission is done. Do you agree to let him complete it?"

Sakitsuki's golden eyes suddenly light up in hope. One thing she had totally forgotten about her mistress is her obviously good will. Of course, she would never have scolded her. Her presence here means she has a way to make everything right. With a bright smile that starts to draw on her face, Saki prepares to accept the gesture of Hyakki who raises his hand toward her.

Yet, to her disappointment, the one she tries to save blatantly smacks her helping hand away. Before she can move, Takeshi lays his arm on her shoulder and steps forward between Hyakki and her, defying the god of destruction who can't hold back his laughter.

Sakitsuki frowns in anger, but stays calm, as she expects her mistress to act wisely. However, up in the sky, Naobi only sighs, and stands still. Takeshi comes face to face with Hyakki who cracks his fingers and accepts the Minamoto's challenge.

"This won't end without a fight…" Kaori says aloud, astonished by Takeshi's resolve, as much as everyone else.

"I'm glad you decided so by yourself." Hyakki mocks. "To be honest, Naobi-sama was instructed not to interfere with my mission at all cost. The only reason I had the courtesy to kindly ask at first, is because I knew that, no matter what Sakitsuki would bring herself to believe, I'd be able to crush her idea down, for it is my choice only, what happens now. That you challenge me makes it simpler for me. I get what I want, and I don't even have to savagely force it."

After this tirade, he tilts his head to see Saki behind Takeshi again.

"Goldie, you're advised to step out of here." he says. "Go up there with Naobi-sama if you still have some brains left."

Sakitsuki sees Naobi make a gentle sign, telling her to join her up here. Out of options, she has to accept what is happening. She can't get involved in the fight that will take place, and no one will be able to help Takeshi. She joins her mistress up in the sky, after a quick sorry look at the one she fell in love with.

Behind Takeshi, all the ninjas of Kiri get down the boat and get in ranks. Tsubai steps closer than the others and gets by his son's side. Kaori, Yukiko and Kokoro are in the first line behind them.

"This is catastrophic…" Yukiko whispers to Kaori and Kokoro, not to make everyone else panic as well. "Without the Hokage, we don't stand a chance."

"No. It's just as planned." Kaori answers confidently. "It seems like that woman up there isn't allowed to fight. So it's just the target. And his chakra won't stay unnoticed. We just have to hold on long enough for the Hokage to get there and fight for us, as we planned."

Yukiko and all the surrounding ninjas make relieved faces and show the same confidence as Kaori. However, Kokoro remains doubtful. She stares at Naobi, whose presence is still not justified. Hyakki, with his injured sight, squints to slightly see the faces of the ninjas in the back, all being oddly too calm.

"Y'all seem pretty confident." he comments. "I get it. You just hope to be an introduction and leave the rest to someone else. But let me tell you one thing. This is between me and you."

After these words, the god of destruction turns around and makes a little head sign to Naobi who immediately understands the message and stares toward the continent, where the land of Fire is.

"You need something solid!" Hyakki yells at her. "Not like what the Uchiha broke out from last time!"

"I've learned my lesson." Naobi answers, raising both hands to let her chakra spread around.

Shinsen Kata

For just a second, she uses the same transformation as Hyakki did during his last invasion. Takeshi and Tsubai both look frightened at this sight, troubled by what it means. The terrible feeling she gave off until now was not even half of her true power. Her real nature is beyond their senses.

Even though nobody is able to sense this immeasurable strength, some ninjas are still perturbed by it. Some of them lose their focus and sink into the water. Others even faint or vomit.

"This is unbelievable!" Tentoki exclaims in Takeshi's mind, unable to contain his surprise.

"Tsubai, what the hell is this?" Daikoku tells his host at the same time.

Takeshi stays silent. He just looks up to her and, in her eyes, notices the exact same Dojutsu as Tojiki. The Sharin-Byakugan, but as a fully grown pair. Sakitsuki did mention that earlier, and it seems like they will be offered to see it in action now. In an instant, the chakra of Naobi spreads across the whole sea, reaching the continents.

Kamimusubi

With this perfect illusion, she erases the whole area of the perception of anyone outside, no matter where they are on this entire planet. Even Naruto Uzumaki, on his way to the littoral of the land of Fire, has become unable to see, hear or sense anything that will happen on this ocean. Whatever Hyakki and the ninjas of Kiri will proceed to now will go unnoticed, preventing any exterior involvement.

Tsubai, sensing this illusion strike, understands exactly what it means. His plan has been cut short with such ease. It all relied on Naruto's help, but it's now impossible… Regardless, they're now trapped with Hyakki and have no other choice but to fight. He looks up to Naobi and Sakitsuki.

"Sakitsuki, I guess that you're forbidden to do anything now…" he says, before addressing her mistress. "But what about you? What will you do?"

"Oh you can be glad she won't do anything." Hyakki answers for her. "Actually… No. You would have preferred her. She would have made it painless and instant for y'all. With me, you won't have the same luck. I'll just make you see what I didn't dare to show last time."

Behind Takeshi, Kokoro gets in a fight stance. They may not have the help of Naruto, but they still have all the strategies they established during the last week. There is nothing else they can do anyway. Fighting and seeking revenge is the only option.

Tsubai takes a deep breath in, stares right into the eyes of the one who murdered his wife, and reminds himself of what he's been waiting for. It is the only thing he's living for. And he won't rest until it's done. He and Daikoku let their dark chakra leak out and gather in the air. The father gives a light tap on Takeshi's shoulder, to let him get ready as well.

Takeshi looks at Sakitsuki, and then down at Hyakki. This isn't the battle where he loses everything. This is nothing foretold by the Daitengu. Only one thing is foreseen. He will fight for Saki and avenge his mother.
