Chapter 348: Chapter 348: Don’t Try to Fish in Troubled Waters, Danzo, I Will Always Keep an Eye on You
The Uchiha elders exchanged incredulous looks. The base is under attack?
This was Uchiha territory. Who would dare to attack Uchiha elders here?
The assault was abrupt. As the guards outside the base clashed with the enemy, those stationed inside quickly rushed out to assist.
But when they reached the entrance, they froze in shock.
The base was surrounded by a dense formation of ninjas, their numbers overwhelming. Leading them was none other than the most despised figure in the Uchiha clan, Shimura Danzo.
"Danzo! What is the meaning of this? Does the village intend to attack the Uchiha?"
Several elders emerged from the base, demanding answers with voices tinged with disbelief and outrage.
Danzo sneered, his eyes gleaming with malice. "It's the middle of the night, and instead of resting, you've gathered in this desolate place for a secret meeting. What are you plotting?"
As Danzo's gaze locked onto their Sharingan, he felt an almost irresistible urge to claim them—an urge he was known for indulging.
"You're talking nonsense!"
An elder, his Sharingan spinning in fury, couldn't suppress his anger.
Slander! Absolute slander!
To conspire against the village was a crime punishable by death. Even if they had been plotting, admitting to such a charge would be unthinkable.
Danzo ignored their protests, his expression cold as he raised his hand and declared, "The Uchiha elders are plotting a coup. Arrest them."
"Yes, sir!"
The surrounding ninjas surged forward, initiating a full-scale battle.
The Uchiha elders and their guards were formidable. Despite their age, the elders were seasoned Jonin with the added power of the three-tomoe Sharingan. Against ordinary Jonin, they were nearly unstoppable.
But this was not an ordinary situation.
The attackers outnumbered them more than ten to one. The Hokage Guards, along with Sarutobi and Shimura clan ninjas, were elite shinobi—far stronger than typical forces.
The sound of clashing steel and battle cries filled the night air. Strangely, no reinforcements arrived.
Under normal circumstances, the ANBU or the police force would have responded immediately. Yet tonight, there was nothing.
"Danzo, you'll pay for this!"
"Why?! Why are you doing this?"
The Uchiha elders fought valiantly, but as their guards fell one by one, they realized the end was near.
Confusion and despair clouded their minds. Was this an attempt to destroy the Uchiha clan?
No—it didn't make sense. Wiping out the entire Uchiha would lead to chaos, but eliminating a few elders wouldn't provoke the same level of backlash.
As they pieced it together, a chilling realization dawned on them.
This was a setup.
Uchiha Fugaku and the village leaders had conspired against them. The so-called family meeting was a trap, one designed to eliminate them.
"Fugaku, you traitor!"
Meanwhile, Danzo moved like a shadow, ruthlessly dispatching his targets. With calculated precision, he slit an elder's throat and reached down to claim a Sharingan.
Grinning, he pocketed the eye and prepared to take another. But before he could act, a raspy voice broke the silence.
"Put it back. Now."
Danzo froze, his body tense as his eyes darted toward the source of the voice. A pair of glowing green eyes stared back at him from the shadows.
A puppet?
Danzo's expression darkened. He had no idea how long it had been there, lying in wait, but its timing was impeccable.
As the last enemies fell, the Third Hokage and his advisors approached the scene. They immediately noticed the puppet standing guard, its glowing eyes fixed on Danzo.
"Return the Sharingan. It belongs to Uchiha," the puppet commanded, its tone unwavering.
Around it, more puppets emerged from the darkness, their glowing green eyes illuminating the night. Their numbers quickly outstripped the Hokage Guards.
Each puppet radiated an eerie, almost menacing presence, their purpose clear: to watch, to warn, and to protect.
"Danzo, did you take the Sharingan?" The Third Hokage's tone was stern, his displeasure evident.
The Sharingan and the bodies of Uchiha clan members were valuable for research, but taking them without permission risked inflaming tensions with the Uchiha.
Danzo's jaw tightened as he realized he had no choice. With a scowl, he withdrew the stolen Sharingan and tossed it to the ground.
"Humph!" he huffed, storming off angrily.
The puppets quickly gathered the Sharingan and the bodies of the fallen Uchiha, retreating into the darkness as silently as they had appeared.
Watching the puppets vanish, Koharu Utatane struggled to contain her unease.
"How many of those things has he planted around the village?" she muttered.
"I don't know," the Third Hokage replied, his tone measured. "But haven't you noticed? Ever since these puppets started appearing, incidents of infiltration and crime have dropped significantly."
Koharu's expression tightened. The entire village was under surveillance.
Shinki, head of the ANBU, had eyes everywhere. While the Hokage couldn't monitor every corner of Konoha, Shinki's puppets had effectively turned the village into his domain.
Mitokado Homura chose to remain silent, keeping his thoughts to himself. As long as Shinki didn't overstep his bounds, there was no point in raising objections.
"If you're worried about secrets being exposed," the Hokage continued, "just say less and do less. Shinki promised that no puppets would spy on the Hokage's office or other critical areas."
Turning to his advisors, the Hokage issued his next order.
"Send word to Uchiha Fugaku. Let him know the task is complete. I expect him to fulfill his part of the agreement and stabilize the clan quickly to avoid further chaos."
With that, the Hokage turned and left, his pipe in hand.
Koharu watched him go, her frustration bubbling over. "What does he mean by 'say less and do less'? What are we supposed to do now?"
Mitokado Homura didn't bother responding. Without a word, he left to deliver the message to Fugaku personally, leaving Koharu fuming in silence.
