Naruto: The Medical Shinobi

Chapter 97: Chapter 95: Forbidden knowledge

As he ran through the village after leaving the library, Ryu categorised the information he had already learnt while looking at the screen in front of him and following the familiar routes back to home.

As he entered the modest house he shared with his grandfather, he called out, "I'm home, Grandpa!"

Dan's warm voice responded from the living room, "Welcome back, Ryu. How was your day at the academy?"

"It was interesting," Ryu began, his voice tinged with a hint of disappointment. "We were introduced to genjutsu today. After class, I went to the library, but..." He trailed off, his brow furrowing.

Dan raised an eyebrow, encouraging Ryu to continue. "But what? Have you encountered any problems?

Ryu sighed, his shoulders slumping slightly. "I was only granted access to the E section. It was... disappointing. There's so much more I want to learn, but it feels like everything's locked away."

Dan nodded sagely, a knowing smile playing on his lips. "Ah, I see. You've run into the village's knowledge restriction system."

Ryu's eyes widened with curiosity. "Knowledge restriction system?"

Dan set aside his scroll, giving his full attention to his grandson. He leaned forward, his voice taking on the tone of a seasoned storyteller. "Yes, Ryu. Access to information in our village is carefully controlled and restricted based on an individual's rank. As an academy student, you only have access to the E and D sections."

Ryu leaned in, hanging on every word as his grandfather continued, "Genin are granted access to the C section, while Chunin can explore up to the B section. The A section is reserved for Jonin only."

"But why?" Ryu asked, his frustration evident in his voice. "Why keep so much knowledge locked away?"

Dan's expression grew serious, the lines on his face deepening. "It's to protect young shinobi who might not realise the dangers certain jutsu can pose, both to themselves and others. You may be mature for your age, Ryu, but not everyone is like you. Even simple jutsu can be harmful if not performed correctly. Mental and emotional preparedness are just as important as skill."

Ryu's mind raced, processing this information. He thought of his classmates, some of whom struggled with even basic techniques.

Dan went on, "Even the Ninja clans do not ignore this and teach their kids according to their talents and not force advanced jutsu upon them before the right time."

Ryu took this information in and nodded slowly. A mixture of lingering frustration and understanding washed over him. Although he could see the wisdom in his grandfather's words, a part of him still longed for that forbidden knowledge.

After a moment of contemplation, he looked up at his grandfather, a new question forming in his mind. "Grandpa, there's something else I wanted to ask you about."

Dan raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Oh? What's on your mind?"

Ryu took a deep breath, steeling himself. "I was wondering... could you teach me the Shadow Clone Jutsu?"

A flicker of surprise crossed Dan's face, quickly replaced by a thoughtful expression. "The Shadow Clone Jutsu? That's quite an advanced technique, Ryu. What sparked this interest?"

Ryu tried to keep his voice steady, hoping to convey maturity beyond his years. "Well, I've been thinking about ways to accelerate my learning. I have read that quick training and information gathering can be accomplished with Shadow Clones. I believed it might enable me to advance more quickly.

Dan gave a slow nod, his eyes glimmering with pride at his grandson's clever logic. "You're not wrong. Indeed, there are a lot of benefits to the [Shadow Clone-Jutsu]. It works well for reconnaissance, diverting attention, and, yes, speeding up learning. But..."

He paused, his expression growing serious. "It's also an A-rank jutsu with significant drawbacks and risks."

Dan shifted in his seat, his posture straightening as he prepared to impart crucial knowledge. "Unlike elemental clones, [Shadow Clones] are incredibly chakra-intensive and not to mention difficult to maintain. Each clone you create divides your chakra equally. This means not only is your own chakra reserve diminished, but the clones themselves have limited capabilities. It is impossible for a clone to win over its original body in combat."

Ryu's eyes widened, his mind conjuring images of exhausted shinobi surrounded by fading clones.

"Moreover, the mental strain of creating and maintaining Shadow Clones can be overwhelming. The influx of memories and experiences when a clone dispels can overload the user's mind. In extreme cases, it could even lead to coma," Dan continued, his voice taking on a warning tone.

A chill ran down Ryu's spine as he considered the implications. The technique that had seemed so miraculous in his imagination now took on a more sinister aspect. He had always wondered about the feasibility of the technique in the real world.

"So," Ryu said slowly, his voice barely above a whisper, "I'm guessing it's not as simple as just making a bunch of clones and having them train for you."

Dan laughed, but there was also a trace of seriousness in his gaze. "Precisely. It's a technique that requires immense chakra reserves and mental fortitude to use effectively. Even then, it's not without risks."

With his earlier excitement dampened by reality, Ryu's shoulders dropped a little. He sighed after giving it some thought. "I see. I suppose the Shadow Clone Jutsu is off limits."

Dan gave a nod before continuing, "Ryu, there is another reason why I cannot teach you this technique."

Ryu asked, "What is that, Grandpa?" out of curiosity.

"The Shadow Clone Jutsu is classified as a forbidden technique in our village," Dan explained. "It's not something you'll find in any public library or academy curriculum."

Ryu asked, "Forbidden? But why?"

Dan leaned back and said, "Jutsu are classified into three categories in our village, and in most hidden villages: common jutsu, secret jutsu, and forbidden jutsu." His expression was solemn.

He went on to explain each category in detail.

"Common jutsu were freely accessible and well-known throughout the villages. Every village knows the secrets to these common and basic jutsu," Dan said. "They are kept in the public library and are widely accessible because of this."

"Secret jutsu," he continued, his voice taking on a reverent tone, "belong to specific clans or individuals, protected by old treaties. When the Leaf Village was founded and multiple ninja clans joined the newly formed village, their legacies and secret jutsu were protected by the Secret Jutsu Act signed by founding clans. Even though our clan did not have any secret jutsu, we also signed that pact alongside all other ninja clans at the foundation of the village."

Ryu listened intently, his mind racing with the implications of this information.

"And lastly, we have forbidden jutsu," Dan stated, a little lowering of his voice. "These are mostly legacies of past Hokages and other S-ranked ninjas from the village's history. Because of their strength or the threat they would pose to an inexperienced ninja or just keep them safe from spies of other villages, they are kept hidden."

"The Shadow Clone Jutsu and its more advanced variant, the Multi-Shadow Clone Jutsu, fall into this last category," Dan concluded. "They're kept under lock and key in the Hokage's forbidden scroll. Even if someone knows a jutsu, if it is from that forbidden scroll, he or she cannot pass on that jutsu without permission of Hokage."

Ryu sat back, processing this new information. The world of jutsu and ninja techniques was far more complex than he had initially thought. He felt a mix of awe and slight disappointment, realising how much there was still to learn.

he thought, "If I recreate and demonstrate the Rasengan, I might be accused of stealing a forbidden jutsu and would be in trouble."

Dan leaned over to Ryu and said, "For now, forget about shadow clones. Focus on what you can learn at the academy. If that's not enough, there's always the library. And remember, knowledge isn't just about quantity but quality."

Dan went on, "I advise you to concentrate on the fundamentals and save Shadow Clone Jutsu for when you reach a chunnin rank. Complete the chakra control activities and concentrate on the remaining basic lessons covered at the academy. Understanding the basics deeply can be more valuable than knowing a hundred advanced techniques superficially."

Ryu nodded, feeling a mix of disappointment and determination. His grandfather's words resonated within him.

Internally, Ryu thought, "Goodbye, Shadow Clone spamming."

He silently vowed to himself as he assisted his grandfather in making dinner, "Even if I could not use shadow clones to train like crazy like in the original story and all the fanfics, I would put in a lot of effort and learn everything I could without shadow clones. And I will discover the methods behind these forbidden jutsus. Without that jutsu, it would take time, but I am still in my first year. i have plenty of time."

A/N :

I do not want Ryu to walk on the same path as other MCs, that is why I have closed the door on Shadow Clone Jutsu and Rasengan for now. I have also introduced the reason why not everyone can be taught it for training purposes. Even if it was chakra intensive, it could still cut half the training time for everyone. But still, no one is taught this jutsu in the anime or manga. I came up with this reason and also introduced the Secret Jutsu Act.
