Chapter 99: The Blissfully Ignorant
Despite the turmoil that brewed, the common people were wholly unaware of the predicament they had found themselves in. As if a Genjutsu had obscured their eyes, they could feel neither Kurama's ever-looming chakra nor the powerful auras lingering about.
Uchiha Sasuke was one such person left unaware. He and his classmates under Iruka were going about their classes as usual. The Academy was probably the safest place at the moment. Even though it was near the Hokage's office.
No one notable was present there, and such young children could not achieve much, even as a group.
They had yet to become shinobi, after all.
Suguru, whose gaze had pierced through even the classroom walls, enjoyed a moment of peace. He 'attended' class for a bit and listened to Iruka's lecture.
Looking at Sasuke's brooding expression, Suguru fell into thought.
Until...
"Hm?"
Upon noticing another familiar face, Suguru realized that the entire class didn't seem ignorant of the happenings beneath the calm surface. Shikamaru was uncannily engaged in the lecture.
The boy's famed lazy demeanor was nowhere to be found. Suguru found this intriguing.
There was a high likelihood that Shikamaru had an inkling of something.
Although he seemed focused on Iruka's words, it was clear to any keen observer that his mind had flown elsewhere. A crease of anxious worries had wrinkled the bridge of his nose.
Shikamaru was hiding beneath a calm façade.
This led Suguru to recall yet another person.
'...I haven't seen Shikaku yet.'
Odd.
Nara Shikaku should've been with Hiruzen and the others. However, despite combing through Konohagakure several times, Suguru still hadn't seen his face.
A suspicion crossed Suguru's mind. Although searching for Shikaku throughout the Land of Fire would be like looking for a needle in a haystack, perhaps there was something to gain in doing so.
All he needed to wager was timing.
Just when he was about to glance elsewhere—
—Poof!
He was dispelled.
The main body was in trouble.

Suguru could feel a cold sweat dripping down his back. His eyes glanced warily at the masked individual with lightning pouring out of his hand, screaming at the world.
The chirping of a thousand birds wailed in his ears.
It seemed like a certain someone had been called back to the Anbu. With his kitsune mask and his spiky white hair, Suguru couldn't mistake this person for anyone else.
"Kakashi of the Sharingan..."
Suguru's lips twitched as he looked straight into the crimson gleam of the Sharingan. He had no idea how he was tracked down. Blood flowed down his arm, dispelling his transformation.
Meanwhile the smell of ozone, burnt flesh, and melting fabric wafted over like a tide. Before him was a surprising opponent.
"Is there something you want from me?" Suguru tried to make conversation.
Unfortunately, it didn't seem like Kakashi was there to talk. All Suguru saw was a blur. All he felt was a jolt of electricity.
"Tsk!"
Suguru clicked his tongue. Pouring chakra into his eyes, he hurriedly activated the two things he could use to level the playing field.
'Sharingan!'
Furthermore...
[Tiger].
'Blaze Battle Body!'
—Vwhoom!
With a flick of his hand, Suguru sent out a slash of flames to intercept Kakashi's Chidori. Although Kakashi simply outmaneuvered the slow attack, Suguru successfully bought himself a split second of time.
He gazed straight into Kakashi's eyes.
'You're not an Uchiha, Kakashi.' Suguru eyes flashed with a malevolent gleam. 'Genjutsu: Sharingan!'
"You—!" A gasp resounded within the kitsune mask, appalled by the sudden appearance of a pair of Sharingan.
But it was too late.
Caught in a moment of Genjutsu, Kakashi hurriedly disrupted his chakra. He then awoke to a flaming fist making contact with his face.
—Bwhoom!
The Anbu mask cracked and melted while Kakashi was sent flying off the branch the two had been fighting on. The lightning that screamed out of his hand dissipated into the air as its user lost control of his chakra.
Suddenly.
Suguru's momentum froze before he could act any further. His eyes shrank as he lost control over every muscle in his body.
"This..."
It was a familiar technique. After all, it was the famous Shadow Possession Jutsu.
***
"Suguru..." Shikaku's eyes flashed when he saw the two crimson Sharingan in the boy's eyes. Confusion clouded his vision.
He did not expect to see those eyes in the boy before him. After all, Suguru was an orphan from outside the village. His records did not match any of the Uchiha children born during his time.
Furthermore, he and Hiruzen had tried verifying Suguru's origins multiple times. Not once did they consider the possibility that the boy could have been an Uchiha.
Thus...
"How did you get those eyes?"
Shikaku had approached Suguru for a different reason entirely. However, this revelation caught him off guard. Was Suguru an Uchiha this whole time?
Shikaku couldn't tell.
"..." Suguru kept his lips shut.
Seeing this, Shikaku shook his head. "Very well. I hadn't been looking for you to ask about that in the first place."
Glancing at Kakashi who was slowly getting up, Shikaku spoke. "Stand down, Kitsune. I know you have orders from Lord Hokage. However, Lord Third has business with him. He is not a normal missing-nin of the hidden leaf."
Kakashi carefully nodded, acknowledging the unexpected situation. At first, he was simply out on a mission to send a message to the Senju. Unexpectedly, he had uncovered a deep secret behind Danzo's past orders to kill a boy named 'Hiryu Suguru.'
Looking at the eyes of the person in question, Kakashi felt that he had been excluded from a lot of plans and secrets. He had even taken a rather rough punch with his face due to his lack of information.
'Luckily, that punch wasn't as strong as it looked.' Kakashi felt a slight chill.
If Suguru had the same physical prowess as someone like Guy, Kakashi felt that he wouldn't have come out of that exchange with just a burned mask. He was fortunate that Suguru had yet to fully mature.
Shikaku canceled his jutsu and Suguru regained control over his body. The latter continued to stare at Shikaku with an unwavering gaze. His Sharingan was no longer kept hidden, bleeding with curiosity.
The crimson gleam made Shikaku uncomfortable.
'What a damn drag,' he thought.
After a sigh, Shikaku went straight to the point. He met Suguru's gaze without an ounce of hesitation.
"How much have you researched Sunagakure's Real Mirage Formation?"
