Chapter 35: Chapter 35: The Blooming Lotus Flower
Seeing his name on the electronic display, Gaara rushed to the training ground impatiently using Sand Instant flicker and coldly demanded his opponent get to the field.
The murderous intent in Gaara's eyes had intensified after the previous match. He couldn't wait to taste his opponent's blood to calm his restless heart.
As Gaara left for the field, Kankuro headed toward Guy's viewing platform, trying to gather information about Kirito.
Anyone with a discerning eye could see from the last battle that the two fighters were on completely different levels. If they hadn't been from the same village, the match would have ended even faster. Thinking that such a dangerous opponent might appear in the next round, Kankuro felt compelled to prepare by gathering more intelligence.
Reaching Konoha's viewing platform, Kankuro tried to glean information from Naruto. Unfortunately, Naruto dismissed him outright with a curt, "I'm not interested in you." Embarrassed, Kankuro found himself at a loss.
[Asking Naruto for information? Isn't that like asking Zoro for directions?] Kirito thought with an inward chuckle, watching the awkward exchange.
Meanwhile, despite his confidence in Rock Lee's strength, Guy knew that Kirito was a very different opponent from the ones Lee had faced before. Noticing Kirito's serious demeanor, Guy privately offered Lee advice about Gaara's weaknesses, particularly the large gourd on his back.
"I understand now, Guy-sensei!" Lee exclaimed with sudden clarity.
"So you never noticed before?" Sakura and Kakashi couldn't hold back their complaints, causing Lee to laugh awkwardly.
Still, Guy's enthusiasm was undeterred. "Very well, Lee! Go show them your youth!"
"Ohhh!" Lee roared in reply, jumping into the arena to face Gaara.
Standing opposite his opponent, Lee addressed Gaara with a wide grin. "I didn't expect to face you so soon. This is exciting!"
Gaara, however, responded with stony silence, hurling the cork from his gourd as his only acknowledgment.
"Let the final match begin!" the proctor announced.
Lee launched forward with a "Konoha Whirlwind," but Gaara's sand reacted faster, rising to block the attack instantly.
"You can manipulate sand? That's a tricky technique," Lee observed, his eyes narrowing. "Let's see how fast you really are!"
Lee accelerated, striking from different angles, but Gaara's sand continued to block his every move. Gradually, the sand began closing in on Lee, forcing him to leap back to safety.
Gaara stood motionless, his arms crossed, as if bored by Lee's attempts. Watching from the stands, Sakura remarked, "Lee's attacks are so fast, yet they're completely ineffective. What's going on?"
Kankuro, still observing from the viewing platform, provided an explanation. "Physical attacks are useless against Gaara. His sand forms an automatic shield that protects him, even without his conscious effort. That's why no one has managed to hurt him so far."
Kirito smirked to himself. [Isn't Kankuro supposed to be gathering intel? Why is he playing commentator?]
Lee, realizing his current strategy was futile, turned to Guy for approval. At Guy's nod, he removed the weights strapped to his legs.
"Go, Lee!" Guy shouted.
The moment Lee leapt, his speed increased dramatically, shocking everyone, including Gaara. For the first time, Gaara's sand struggled to keep up. Lee's relentless strikes created openings in the sand's defenses, and with a powerful spinning kick, he landed a direct hit on Gaara's head.
Encouraged by Guy's cheers, Lee pressed his advantage, landing another devastating blow that sent Gaara sprawling to the ground.
But when Gaara rose, fragments of sand shell fell away from his face, revealing he had been protected by an additional layer of sand armor.
"He covered himself with sand armor…?" Lee muttered, astonished that even his enhanced speed couldn't bypass Gaara's defenses entirely.
Gaara's calm demeanor cracked, revealing a feral grin beneath his sandy exterior. The match was far from over.
Determined to overcome Gaara's defenses, Lee removed the bandages from his arms and launched into a series of high-speed maneuvers. Catching Gaara off-guard, he kicked him into the air and began spinning around him, using his bandages to bind Gaara tightly.
Lee's final move, "Primary Lotus," sent Gaara crashing into the ground, creating a massive crater in the arena. For a moment, it seemed Lee had achieved victory.
But as the dust settled, Gaara's body crumbled like a sand clone. His real figure appeared behind Lee, unharmed, and now filled with murderous intent.
"Sand Coffin!" Gaara's sand wrapped around Lee's limbs, immobilizing him.
Despite his injuries and mounting exhaustion, Lee refused to surrender. Pushing himself beyond his limits, he opened the Third Gate of Life and Fourth Gate of Pain, unleashing a torrent of chakra that transformed his body into a blur of motion.
Lee's newfound power allowed him to outmaneuver Gaara's attacks and shatter his sand armor. In a final, desperate assault, he opened the Fifth Gate of Limit and performed his ultimate move: "Hidden Lotus."
Lee wrapped Gaara in his bandages, launching him into the air before slamming him into the ground with devastating force. The arena shook violently, and Gaara lay motionless in the wreckage.
But Lee's efforts weren't enough. Gaara had cushioned his fall with a sand cushion and stood up, albeit injured and trembling with fury.
With Lee completely exhausted and unable to defend himself, Gaara prepared to deliver the finishing blow.
"Enough!" Kirito's voice cut through the tension as a wave of ice froze Gaara's sand mid-attack.
Appearing beside Lee, Kirito quickly assessed his injuries with his Byakugan. [Left arm and leg: comminuted fractures. Right arm and leg: fractures. Torn muscles, internal bleeding, and shock.]
Kirito sealed Lee's damaged tendons with Gentle Fist, preventing further injury, and began stabilizing his condition.
Seeing Gaara breaking free from the ice, Kirito sent another freezing wave that immobilized Gaara and his sand entirely.
The proctor, finally intervening, declared Gaara the winner.
As the crowd processed the spectacle, Guy knelt beside Lee, his face filled with concern.
"Lee's injuries are severe," Kirito explained, "but he'll survive with proper treatment. However, his left arm and leg may require specialized surgery beyond what Konoha can offer."
Guy nodded solemnly. "Thank you, Kirito. I owe you everything for saving him."
Kirito gave a small smile. "This is what teammates do."
In the center of the frozen arena, Gaara glared at Kirito, his sand powerless against the ice. For the first time, Gaara realized his chakra-infused sand could be neutralized.
With the match concluded, the third exam of the Chunin Selection Exams was set. The contestants would move on, but the scars of the battles fought here would remain forever etched in their memories.
