Chapter 45: Chapter 45: The Turning Tide
While Kirito and the others were racing to catch up, Sasuke finally reached Gaara and his team.
To buy time for Gaara to escape, Temari stepped forward to confront Sasuke. However, weakened by her injuries and low on chakra, she was quickly defeated.
Sasuke pressed on and caught up with Gaara once more, but this time Kankuro stayed behind to block him. As Kankuro prepared for battle, Temari, injured and exhausted, tried to help Gaara flee again.
Kankuro's plan was interrupted by Shino, who had been tracking Sasuke using the Aburame clan's insects. Before Sasuke set off, Shino had secretly left a female insect on him, allowing the male insects to lead him to the same location.
Shino, determined to redeem himself after Kankuro forfeited their earlier match, confronted Kankuro head-on.
The two clashed, pitting Kankuro's puppet techniques against Shino's insect manipulation. The battle ended in a stalemate—Kankuro was rendered immobile after Shino's insects consumed his chakra, while Shino succumbed to Kankuro's poison.
With Kankuro out of commission, Sasuke resumed his pursuit and caught up with Gaara and Temari. By then, Temari was too injured to continue running.
"It's over," Sasuke said coldly, towering over Gaara and Temari.
"How did Kankuro fail so quickly? There must be reinforcements..." Temari muttered in disbelief.
As Temari panicked, Gaara groaned in pain, clutching his head.
"Gaara, are you okay?" Temari asked, her voice filled with worry.
"Uchiha Sasuke!" Gaara growled, shoving Temari aside. "Get out of my way!"
"No matter what you're planning, I'll stop you here," Sasuke declared, recalling the monstrous hand he had seen earlier during the Chunin Exams.
"Let me see your true form," he challenged.
Gaara clutched his head as the sand armor on his body began to crack, and his face twisted in agony.
"Stop, Gaara! Don't forget the plan!" Temari cried desperately.
"You and I are the same," Gaara said through gritted teeth. "We both fight to prove our existence. But unlike you, I will destroy everything to feel alive!"
With a deafening roar, Gaara's transformation began. His body swelled, and his right side took on the monstrous form of Shukaku, the One-Tailed Beast.
"Let me feel it, Uchiha Sasuke!" Gaara bellowed, his half-monster face twisted in a murderous grin.
Sasuke, trembling at Gaara's grotesque form, recalled the terrifying eyes he had glimpsed during their earlier match. But he steeled himself, determined not to show weakness.
Summoning his courage, Sasuke activated his Sharingan and channeled lightning chakra into his hand. The familiar chirping of Chidori filled the air.
Sasuke charged forward, lightning flashing as he closed the distance. His Chidori slashed through Gaara's monstrous arm, severing it completely.
But Gaara only laughed maniacally. "Yes! This is the thrill I've been searching for! Hurting someone strong and taking everything from them... that is my reason to exist!"
Gaara's severed arm regenerated instantly, this time with a spiked tail forming behind him.
The battle raged on. Despite his speed and the power of his Sharingan, Sasuke struggled to evade Gaara's relentless attacks. A single misstep sent Sasuke crashing through the trees, landing heavily on a branch.
"Hahaha! You're weak, Uchiha Sasuke!" Gaara taunted. "Your hatred is weaker than mine. Hatred is power, and without it, you're nothing!"
Sasuke, enraged by Gaara's words, forced himself to his feet. Ignoring Kakashi's warnings, he prepared another Chidori.
The two clashed once more, and while Sasuke managed to sever another of Gaara's limbs, the strain of using Chidori twice left him weakened.
As Gaara prepared to deliver a finishing blow, a golden blur suddenly appeared.
"Naruto?" Sasuke murmured, recognizing his teammate standing protectively in front of him.
"Stay back, Sasuke!" Naruto shouted.
"Sasuke!" Sakura's voice called out as she appeared at his side, frantically checking his injuries.
Gaara snarled at the sight of Naruto. "Companions? How pathetic..."
Before he could attack, a streak of blue light descended from the sky.
"Frozen Force Concerto!" Kirito's voice echoed as he struck Gaara with a powerful attack, freezing his sand armor and monster limbs. Gaara was sent flying, crashing through trees as shards of ice scattered across the ground.
"Gaara!" Temari tried to rush to her brother's aid but found herself immobilized.
"I can't let you interfere," Shikamaru said calmly, holding a seal as his shadow kept Temari in place.
"Naruto, get Sasuke to safety," Kirito ordered, standing in the crater left by his attack.
"No way! I'm not leaving you to face him alone!" Naruto protested.
"Naruto!" Sakura shouted, trying to reason with him.
Before they could argue further, Gaara rose to his feet, frostbite visible on his exposed skin.
"You... none of you will leave here alive!" Gaara roared. Forming a seal, he summoned a massive wave of sand.
Kirito countered with another icy attack, freezing the sand in mid-air. But as the frozen sand shattered, Gaara completed his jutsu.
The ground shook as Shukaku's full form started to emerge, towering over the forest.
"Is this... the monster inside him?" Naruto whispered, his voice trembling.
Temari stared in awe and fear. "It's Shukaku... if he reaches his perfect form. He'll destroy everything in his path."
"Death to all of you!" Gaara roared, raising a massive arm to crush them.
"Let me handle this," Kirito said, stepping forward.
Summoning a javelin of pure ice, Kirito imbued it with a massive amount of chakra, then hurled it with precision.
"Winter's Wrath!"
The javelin struck Shukaku in the chest, and frost spread rapidly across the beast's massive body. Cracks appeared as the ice consumed it, and with a final shudder, Shukaku shattered into countless fragments, leaving Gaara unconscious on the ground.
Kirito approached Gaara, ready to take him.
"Wait!" Naruto called out, looking at Gaara with a mix of pity and understanding.
"I know what it's like to feel alone," Naruto said softly. "But he hasn't found the people who will save him yet."
"I won't kill him," Kirito replied. "But someone must take responsibility for what Sand has done to Konoha. He's coming with us."
Naruto nodded reluctantly. With Gaara on Kirito's shoulder and Temari, Kankuro, and Shino accounted for, the group began their journey back to Konoha.
