Chapter 14: Chapter : 14

For those lacking both talent and connections, their future as Genin would be bleak, with a Chunin as their leader. Such unfortunate ninjas wouldn't gain much from their guidance, and they'd likely be sent to the battlefield as cannon fodder, their survival left to chance.

In the large classroom of the Ninja School, Furukawa stood at the front, reading the list of newly assigned teams.

"First Team, Kaze Matsui Tai, Inuzuka Claws, Hinata Temon."

"Ha, I didn't expect to be called first, Sensei!" a voice cheered.

"Tai, I never thought we'd still be on the same team after graduation. It's a shame Haruto isn't here with us. We three were such close friends," another chimed in.

"Yeah, yeah... Wait, Hyuga Temon, you look just like Hyuga Kinmon, the guy who hit me during the graduation exam!"

In another section of the classroom, where the fifth-year graduates sat, there was a clear separation between them and the fourth-year students. Among them, a boy with the trademark white eyes of the Hyuga clan silently observed the scene unfolding before him, his expression unreadable.

"Second Team..."

"Third Team..."

...

"Team 9: Aburame Nami, Inuzuka Ryo, and Uchiha Haruto."

Finally, Haruto heard his name. As for the other two teammates, they were unfamiliar to him, likely from the year above. But judging by their names, they seemed to come from prominent families.

After the assignments were made, each team's respective leaders arrived to collect their students.

Leading Tai's team was a middle-aged Jonin that Haruto did not recognize.

As for Haruto and his team...

"Members of Team 9, meet me by the tree on the playground."

A tall man with long, light blue hair and strikingly handsome features stood at the door, drawing the attention of everyone present, especially the female students.

He was Kato Dan, the former examiner during their graduation tests.

---

In the playground, beside a large tree, the shrill buzz of cicadas filled the air.

Under the shade, Kato Dan studied the three students before him with a nostalgic smile, recalling his own days fresh out of the Academy.

"Alright, let's introduce ourselves. Share your dreams, hobbies, and dislikes. As your leader, I'll start."

Kato Dan pointed to himself. "My name is Kato Dan, a Jonin. My dream is to become Hokage. I enjoy stargazing with those close to me, and I can't think of anything I dislike. Your turn."

"I'll go first!" said a boy with wild hair, holding a small silver-white puppy in his arms and wearing face paint. He was Inuzuka Ryo.

Next to him stood a girl in a hooded outfit despite the summer heat, with sunglasses concealing her eyes—Aburame Nami, the second teammate of Haruto. Both were former fifth-year students, a year ahead of him and highly regarded among their peers.

"My name's Inuzuka Ryo! I also want to become Hokage like Sensei here. But since you want to be Hokage too, I'll settle for being the Fifth Hokage instead! My favorite thing is taking Tetsumaru for walks, and I really don't like people who dislike dogs!"

Tetsumaru, the puppy cradled in Ryo's arms, barked in agreement.

Kato Dan chuckled. "That's a great dream and some unique interests. What about the two of you?"

"Nami Aburame. I like insects. There's nothing I particularly dislike. My dream is to discover new insect species."

Nami's introduction was concise, matching the reserved nature typical of the Aburame clan.

"And you, Haruto?" Kato Dan turned his attention to him, recalling the words of Hiruzen Sarutobi, who was currently leading Konoha's forces against Kumogakure. The Third Hokage had mentioned how vital it was to instill the Will of Fire in promising young Uchihas like Haruto, hoping to bridge the gap between the clan and the village.

"I'm Haruto. I enjoy practicing ninjutsu in peace. There are a lot of things I dislike, but the worst is probably when someone disturbs my training."

Haruto paused, considering his words.

Aiming to become Hokage was the ideal response, fitting perfectly with the Will of Fire, but it could also be dangerous if taken too seriously—evident from the fates of characters like White Fang, Kato Dan, and Neji in the original story.

However, he knew the importance of making the right statement.

"My goal is to become a powerful ninja, to protect my clan, the village, and everything I hold dear."

"Those are admirable dreams," Kato Dan said, crossing his arms with a warm smile.

"Tomorrow at 9 AM, we'll have a practical exercise. But since there's still plenty of time today, how about I treat you all to some barbecue?"

Inuzuka Ryo and Tetsumaru cheered in excitement, while Nami adjusted her glasses in quiet acceptance. Haruto, observing his new teammates, remained thoughtful.

Among them, Ryo seemed passionate and energetic, though Haruto hoped he wouldn't turn out to be a reckless hothead like Naruto in the early days. Without a protagonist's plot armor, such impulsive types could easily endanger their teammates.

Nami, meanwhile, appeared quiet and reserved, fitting the typical demeanor of the Aburame clan, though time would reveal more about her character.

But perhaps the most encouraging part of the arrangement was having Kato Dan as their team leader. Even though Haruto wasn't entirely sure of Kato Dan's combat capabilities, he knew that, according to his memory of the original plot, Kato Dan was once considered a candidate for Hokage alongside the likes of Orochimaru. Even if he wasn't quite at the Hokage's level, his strength was significant.

Moreover, Kato Dan seemed like a genuinely kind person.

Haruto couldn't help but wonder, though, if being assigned under Dan's leadership meant he was now on the radar of Konoha's higher-ups or even the Third Hokage himself.

And, if the time came during the war when Dan's life would be in jeopardy, Haruto resolved to help if he had the power to do so.

---

The summer mornings always arrived early, with the sky already bright by five o'clock.

But the timing hardly mattered to Haruto. Last night's gathering at the barbecue restaurant had gone on late into the night, and now he was awoken by the incessant buzzing of cicadas outside his window.

Despite her reserved nature, Nami had warmed up to the group a bit, and Ryo's liveliness kept the mood upbeat. While Kato Dan had a calm and composed demeanor, he was also friendly and engaging, making the evening an enjoyable one for Haruto.

Luckily, Kato Dan had scheduled their exercise for 9 AM, giving everyone ample time to recover from their late-night bonding.
