Chapter 43: The first month

43: The First Month
"Of course, no problem,"
Menma replied, well-prepared as Naruto's eyes shifted to him. He nodded
slightly. For Menma, this was just a dispensable formality. Participation was
optional, but it was a necessary disguise. Sarutobi Hiruzen couldn't think of
him as someone with an extremely withdrawn personality; that might make the
Third Hokage consider him unstable and uncontrollable.
"Hmph!" Sasuke's attitude
was similar, his snort and lack of refusal indicated his default agreement.
"Yoshi! Then let's go. We must
have a big meal today!" Naruto's face showed obvious excitement as he
raised his right hand and cheered loudly.
The official formation of Team 7 was
complete. Although it differed slightly from the original story's development,
it still seemed to stubbornly follow the original plot. However, in this life,
different existences and wills would inevitably lead to different developments.
The first day of formal graduation
passed this way. For Naruto and Sakura, it was an exciting day. For Menma, it
was ordinary. After the team celebration, Menma went home to reflect on the
battle with Kakashi. In terms of pure personal strength, skills, and
experience, Kakashi had crushed them completely. This made Menma acutely aware
of his current level, further strengthening his sense of urgency.
This is a world where power is
supreme. Which is more important, fists or truth? This isn't even a question.
Truth must be spoken, but without corresponding power, how can you promote your
truth? Ashura, Hashirama Senju, and Naruto Uzumaki all influenced Indra, Uchiha
Madara, and Uchiha Sasuke with words? Don't be funny. Those truths were beaten
out by fists!
Even Jiraiya, who had the most
gentle personality and was called a hero, took decisive action after
discovering Nagato and Konan behind the Akatsuki organization. This world is
clearly understood through such actions. For the ninja group, Jiraiya may be a
"good man," but being a ninja is synonymous with strength. Without
strength, it would be a big joke. Menma wouldn't consider unrealistic things
like justice or mutual understanding. His consistent goal was to protect
himself, defeat enemies, and live happily. For this, Menma would strive with
all his effort. He was not the idealist Uzumaki Naruto but an
"egoist" Uzumaki Menma. Weakness and naivety are the biggest enemies
of ninjas.
After the establishment of Team 7,
Kakashi led Menma, Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura to start missions from the second
day. The level and content of these missions were similar to the original
story. Even though Kakashi recognized their strengths, he couldn't lead them to
perform high-level missions right away. It wasn't a question of danger but
progress. With an elite jonin like him, there was no need to worry about the
dangers of missions below A-level. It was just whether Kakashi was willing.
Menma's identity was special. High-level missions required leaving the village,
and tailed beast Jinchūriki could leave but needed to be stable. As their
leader, Kakashi needed to be cautious. Whether Team 7 could take high-level
tasks and leave the village required the approval of Sarutobi Hiruzen, the
Third Hokage.
Therefore, in the first month, Team
7 carried out the lowest D-level tasks, either searching for lost items or
helping villagers with heavy work. Tasks with risks or technical content
involved capturing escaped domestic livestock. These might be risky for
ordinary people, but not for ninjas. Menma was mentally prepared and didn't
show strange emotions. He knew impatience wouldn't help. There would be people
more anxious than him.
Sure enough, one morning more than a
month later, after completing another lost pet search mission, Naruto held the
pet tightly in his arms. On the way back to the mission building, he looked at
Kakashi with an unhappy expression.
"Brother Kakashi, is this going
to be over? They're all D-level tasks. Either we're pulling weeds or searching
for lost objects. There's no technical content at all! Can't we accept some
slightly more difficult tasks?" Naruto said, dissatisfied.
After a month, with D-level tasks
exceeding double digits, Naruto's patience wore thin. He wanted challenging
tasks. Sasuke nodded slightly, agreeing. These low-level tasks had little value
or training significance.
"No, you have just graduated.
We're still far from high-level missions. Now we should carry out D-level
missions honestly. This is a necessary process for every genin!" Kakashi
said lazily, looking at his 'Icha Icha paradise' and replied casually.
"How long will it take, Brother
Kakashi? It's already been a month!" Naruto raised his head, his face full
of resentment.
"It's only been a month. Work
hard slowly and don't be impatient, Naruto," Kakashi said calmly.
"Okay~~~~~" Naruto's tone
drew out with obvious disappointment. Missions depended on the captain. If
Kakashi was unwilling to lead them to high-level missions, there was nothing
they could do.
