Chapter 16: Chapter 16: The Conflict between Zephyr and Kizaru
Jon's days were simple. He would attend classes and training during the day, and practice his Devil Fruit abilities at night. He only needed around four to five hours of deep sleep each day.
Under this intense training regimen, his progress was enormous, both in terms of physical combat and Devil Fruit powers.
At the moment, Jon hadn't begun fully developing his Devil Fruit yet. He was only using basic powers, and the plants he could create were still too weak. They could affect normal people, but against stronger opponents, it felt like just scratching them.
Currently, Jon could control plants to grow up to three meters tall and could simultaneously create many plants at once.
During his usage of the abilities, he also discovered something. Not only could he create plants, but he could also control the growth of existing plants. Controlling existing plants was far easier than creating new ones.
When he used his powers to create seeds, they could grow up to three meters, but if he controlled other plants, they could reach about five meters, with much less energy consumption.
Not exaggerating, Jon's Devil Fruit powers were much stronger in places with abundant plants, more than double the strength compared to areas without.
But there was an issue. After a lot of research, Jon discovered that not all plants could grow indefinitely. Some plants had limits to their growth.
For example, the most common grass, no matter how hard he tried, could only grow to about three meters. But tree saplings could easily reach their limit of four to five meters. Different types of saplings and plants had different growth potentials.
Jon wasn't surprised by this, as creating plants from nothing was different from manipulating already existing ones. There was a fundamental difference between the two, so naturally, it consumed more energy to create new plants.
Time flew by!
"Flying Finger Gun!"
A sharp air bullet shot rapidly toward Kizaru. The air bullet hit Kizaru, and it seemed like it didn't harm him, but the next moment, an astonishing scene unfolded.
The air bullet struck Kizaru and suddenly, a burst of green appeared, quickly growing into a tree.
Vine-like saplings wrapped around Kizaru, rapidly growing into a full tree. Kizaru's body was completely covered by the tree, leaving only his head exposed.
"Tsk tsk, Jon, impressive imagination! You've developed your Finger Gun to this extent, and you even shot out seeds with your Flying Finger Gun, trapping your opponent. Looks like you're making great progress with your Devil Fruit powers."
The tree that trapped Kizaru was six or seven meters tall, and it was also very thick, nearly covering Kizaru's entire body.
"Too bad, though, your attack speed is still too slow. It takes several seconds for the sapling to grow into a full tree. You have to preemptively use the sapling to trap the opponent. But the level of entanglement is easy to escape from."
A flash of yellow light, and the tree that trapped Kizaru was instantly dispersed, turning into a pile of debris.
"I've trained with you for so long, now it's your turn to take one of my attacks."
Kizaru suddenly showed a sly smile, raised his hand, and pointed toward Jon, releasing a laser.
"Damn it, Kizaru, you fool!"
Jon was startled and immediately used all his power to dodge. The place where he had been standing just moments ago exploded with a loud bang.
Looking back at the crater in the ground, Jon's eyelids twitched. "Kizaru, do you want to kill me?"
Kizaru chuckled and said, "I knew you could dodge. It's impressive, really. Your Observation Haki is something to envy, huh?"
He wasn't the fresh recruit from the North Blue anymore. After arriving at Marine Headquarters, he learned about the existence of Haki and had been working hard to cultivate it.
Of the recruits in this batch, only Akainu and Kizaru had the qualification to cultivate Haki, and the rest hadn't reached that level yet.
Jon, who naturally had Observation Haki, was someone Kizaru both envied and admired. He and Akainu had been training for a while and had barely awakened their Observation Haki, but it was still at the basic stage and was far from Jon's level.
Jon had experienced enough of Kizaru's shamelessness over the past half-year, so he didn't bother arguing.
"You don't know anything. What if I hadn't reacted in time? You yellow monkey."
Having spent so much time with Kizaru, Jon was very close with him and could speak casually.
"You're the only one who could say that. Anyone else would have been vaporized by my laser."
Kizaru pointed at Jon, clearly not too fond of being called "yellow monkey" but not truly angry.
For Kizaru, Jon was his best friend at Marine Headquarters. Even though he had known Akainu longer, Akainu was too serious, and their personalities didn't match.
Jon was different. They would tease each other, joke around, and it never made them upset. In fact, when it came to arguing, Kizaru couldn't really keep up with Jon. Over time, their bond grew stronger.
Jon actually thought similarly about Kizaru. While he spent the most time with Dragon, his roommate, he found Dragon a little fake. They could get along, but Dragon wasn't as open as Kizaru.
Having been in this world for more than ten years, Jon rarely interacted with people his age. Kizaru was probably the person he got along with the best, as they didn't need to be cautious around each other, and Kizaru could even help him with his training.
"Kizaru, what did Zephyr-sensei ask you to do this morning?" Jon asked.
Kizaru grimaced. "What else? Another harsh scolding for not training seriously. He told me to stop relying on my Devil Fruit powers so much. But what's so wrong with that? My Devil Fruit is my strong suit. Should I just abandon it and focus solely on physical combat? It's like throwing away the watermelon to pick up a sesame seed."
"Is that so?"
Jon immediately felt relieved. If there was one person Zephyr disliked most among the new recruits, it was definitely Kizaru.
Most people were scared of and respected Zephyr, but Kizaru loved to argue with him, which made their relationship very bad. Zephyr had publicly criticized Kizaru more than once, and Kizaru had also clashed with Zephyr several times.
Jon had tried to advise Kizaru, but it was no use. He didn't push it anymore.
He remembered that in the One Piece anime, it was mentioned that Kizaru and Zephyr had a very bad relationship. In the plot, Zephyr was defeated by Kizaru, and he ended up in a tragic state.
From a neutral standpoint, Jon felt that Zephyr was not wrong. His advice was absolutely correct. While Devil Fruit powers were strong, physical combat was also important, and it was right for Kizaru to train in that area.
But Kizaru was certainly a problematic student. If Zephyr had spoken to him calmly, Kizaru might have listened.
However, Zephyr was a first-time instructor, and being used to high authority, he had no intention of lowering his status to gently persuade Kizaru. He gave orders instead, which led to a conflict between them.
If Kizaru wasn't so strong, the Marines might have kicked him out long ago.
"Kizaru, I don't get why you insist on clashing with Zephyr. He's only looking out for you."
"Tch."
Kizaru clicked his tongue and said, "I haven't done anything wrong. Why should I apologize? This is between me and him, don't worry about it."
"I don't even want to ask anymore."
Since his good intentions were being taken the wrong way, Jon didn't bother advising him further. Kizaru was the type who couldn't get along with anyone strict and serious.
"Do you have any good suggestions for my abilities?"
Kizaru scratched his head and said, "Do you really need to ask me? You've already developed your powers pretty well. If it were me, I couldn't think of those weird attack methods you came up with. But your ability does rely heavily on plants. The difference in power between having plants around and being in an area without them is huge."
Compared to his own Light-Light Fruit, Kizaru felt that Jon's Devil Fruit was much more complicated.
"Forget it, I'll just research it on my own," Jon said, knowing it was pointless to ask.
