Chapter 170: The Navy’s Highest Honor
-----
It was as though everyone heard the sound of a heart shattering to pieces inside Vice Admiral Chaton.
"Y-You… who are you?! How dare you barge into Gion's villa uninvited!"
A sweet voice from inside the room interrupted his outrage, saying, "Honey, who's out there?"
Moments later, Gion, dressed in a pink, seductive nightgown, emerged. She radiated charm, looking exceptionally young and beautiful.
With her arms wrapped around Akira's waist, she gazed at him with a look full of happiness and affection.
The sight of this Gion left everyone stunned. Their eyes widened in disbelief, their mouths gaping so wide their jaws nearly hit the ground.
"G-G-Gion?! Vice Admiral Gion?!"
"Hm? Oh, Vice Admiral Chaton, it's you. Haven't I rejected you 100 times already? Why are you still pulling these stunts?"
"N-No… it's 99 times…"
"99? My mistake then. Either way, there's no difference between 99 and 100. I have a husband now, so please keep your distance from me to avoid any misunderstandings."
Turning her gaze to Kitaro, she added, "Honey, I swear there's nothing between me and him. He's just been relentlessly pursuing me."
Kitaro gently stroked Gion's head and smiled. "I know."
Gion rewarded him with a kiss on the cheek. "You're the best, honey."
Turning back to Chaton, Kitaro said calmly, "So, you're Vice Admiral Chaton, right? I'd appreciate it if you stayed away from our villa in the future. I don't want any unnecessary rumors about Gion circulating around Marine Headquarters. It could harm her reputation."
"Thank you for looking after Gion in the past, but we won't be needing your assistance anymore."
With that, Kitaro closed the door, leaving Chaton to process his words.
Vice Admiral Chaton stood frozen before his eyes rolled back, and he collapsed to the ground.
"Vice Admiral Chaton!"
"Quick! Get him to the hospital!"
While chaos erupted outside, Kitaro and Gion shut the door and returned to their blissful, shameless little world.
"Who is that guy? Vice Admiral Gion called him her husband?!"
"I know! I know! I've seen him before! He's Uchiha Akira, the twin brother of the most infamous criminal in history, Uchiha Kitaro!"
"What?! Him?!"
Shock rippled through the crowd. Although they had heard of Uchiha Akira, this was the first time they had seen him in person. The revelation that Vice Admiral Gion's husband was an Uchiha was nothing short of explosive.
The news of 'Uchiha Akira' and Vice Admiral Gion living together spread rapidly across Marine Headquarters.
Akira's very existence was a topic of heated debate.
Some argued that, as the younger brother of the notorious Uchiha Kitaro, Akira's bloodline was tainted with crime, and he deserved the death penalty. Allowing him to serve as a Vice Admiral was an insult to the Navy. This view was championed by Admiral Akainu and Vice Admiral Aramaki.
Others, though fewer in number, believed that Akira was pitiable, having been reduced to a tool for Kitaro's ambitions. Joining the Navy might have been his way of opposing his brother, making him a valuable ally in the fight against Uchiha Kitaro. These voices mainly came from the lower ranks of the Navy.
Some, like Fujitora, Kuzan, and Kizaru, remained neutral.
"Gion… how could this happen?"
Fleet Admiral Sengoku's face darkened upon hearing the news.
Gion was a top-tier Vice Admiral, an exceptional talent, and one of the rare female officers of her rank. Her potential as a candidate for Admiral made her a prized asset.
And now, she had been "claimed" by Uchiha Akira*.
(A/N: *Kitaro is disguised as the unexcited Akira, his twin brother that he invented. Just wanted to mention as I got confused. I hate this twin marine thing but at least it will end in 30 chapter or so.)
"This is my fault," Sengoku admitted, sighing. "I sent Gion to monitor Uchiha Akira, hoping she could extract more information about the Uchiha clan. His background is far too mysterious. But I never expected that little girl to fall for him…"
"It's too late to say anything now."
Vice Admiral Tsuru also regretted sending Gion on that mission.
"Why worry so much, old woman? Isn't it normal for young people to fall in love?"
Garp, ever carefree, munched on a donut as he chimed in. Half a year had passed since Ace's execution, and he had finally begun to move past the pain of losing his grandson.
Though their paths were different, Garp had always admired Uchiha Akira's tenacity. In fact, he couldn't bring himself to hate the Uchiha clan, especially after learning about the prosperity and security of the territories under Kitaro's Uchiha Security Company.
"At least admit it—they've done a remarkable job maintaining peace in their regions," Garp added, his tone lighthearted.
"Still, he's Kitaro's twin brother!" Sengoku snapped.
"So what? I'm Dragon's father, Luffy's grandfather, and Ace's grandfather! Does that make me a criminal too?"
Garp glared at Sengoku, finally unleashing his pent-up frustration.
"That's right," Sengoku relented. "And this boy caught Golden Lion and saved Marine Headquarters, restoring our reputation. He deserves recognition for that."
"Of course. That goes without saying."
Three days later, Marine Headquarters was abuzz with activity as officers from across the globe returned for the quarterly awards ceremony.
In the vast square, rows of Marines stood in formation as the honorees were called up. One by one, Fleet Admiral Sengoku personally pinned medals on their chests.
Finally, the highest honor was announced:
The Medal of Supreme Valor.
And the recipient was…
"Vice Admiral Uchiha Akira!"
