Chapter 30: 30. Tough
"May I ask your name, Officer?"
Ignoring his injuries, Martin reached out, looking thrilled.
"I'm no officer; you're the officer!" Marsh responded a bit awkwardly as he shook Martin's hand. "I just enlisted, so I don't even have a rank yet."
"..."
Just enlisted? No rank?
A bolt of lightning struck.
Martin stood there stiffly, wishing that lightning would just strike him down.
"Watch out!"
Still lying on the ground, Smoker shouted suddenly!
A hulking figure suddenly dropped from the sky!
Holding a spiked mace larger than himself, the figure swung down hard toward Marsh and Martin, who were still shaking hands.
With a loud boom!, the impact nearly cracked the ship's keel.
Smoker was sent flying from the shockwave, though his Logia form kept him unharmed.
Meanwhile, Marsh had appeared up at the lookout post, with Martin standing beside him, visibly shaken.
Marsh took a moment to size up the pirate.
Over three meters tall, with arms thicker than Marsh's waist.
Dressed in a strange black-and-white striped jumpsuit, with a small braid hanging down the back.
Wait, that kid lying on the ground... he looked familiar?
A smoke fruit?
Could that be Smoker?
Man, what happened to him in just a few days?
As one of Luffy's early Marine rivals, Smoker caused plenty of trouble for the Straw Hats.
But he looked like just a rookie here.
And where was the girl with glasses who always followed him around?
"That's Heavy Hammer Mossy, the third in command of the Black Vulture Pirates, with a bounty of 94 million berries!"
After recognizing the newcomer, Martin's pupils shrank sharply.
It seemed they wouldn't make it out alive today...
Such a shame for this young man who came to support them.
Ugh, why did you come alone?
Just to die?
"94 million?"
Hearing this, Marsh couldn't help but take another good look at Mossy.
They say that if you go back ten years, the dangers of the sea were even more extreme than in Luffy's time.
Back then, pirate bounties could practically be doubled compared to Luffy's era.
Well, time to see where his strength stood against one of them!
Martin was about to say something, but Marsh's body flickered suddenly, then disappeared from sight.
"Heh, not bad, kid, using Geppo." Mossy sneered, clicking his tongue.
"Just so-so, needs some work." Marsh replied with a smile.
Before he could finish, Mossy vanished and reappeared above Marsh, spiked mace raised high, swinging down hard.
That massive body could move so fast?!
"Die!"
Seeing this, Martin's eyes widened, and he moved to draw his sword to assist.
But the movement reopened his chest wound, and blood sprayed out.
"Officer, I've got this."
With the spiked mace only inches from his head, Marsh still spoke in a calm tone.
Clang!
His right hand turned pitch black as he caught the massive mace, which was several times his own size, stopping it cold!
Boom!
The powerful impact sent a deep, dull sound resonating as the wood beneath Marsh's feet splintered, boards flying, and wind whipping in all directions.
Mossy's body hung mid-air, his gaze filled with murderous intent!
"Die!"
With a growl, his muscles bulged, and he forced the mace down harder.
Crack!
The deck buckled again, and the crater beneath them expanded!
The ship's keel groaned under the strain, sounding as if it might snap at any moment!
And under the force of Mossy's attack, poor Smoker was thrown back again!
Feeling the force of the mace, Marsh's smile didn't falter for a second.
"Swinging around a spiked club like that, you think you're as tough as Kaido?"
He narrowed his eyes, his grip suddenly tightening.
Snap!
A crack appeared where the spiked mace met Marsh's hand!
And then, to everyone's shock, Marsh squeezed until the iron mace cracked wide open!
With a swift, single-finger jab, Marsh struck.
Mossy suddenly felt the weight vanish from his hands, as his massive, iron mace broke in two!
With the mace no longer blocking his view, Mossy finally saw the calm, confident smile on the young Marine's face.
Then, Marsh reached for the bamboo pole strapped across his back.
With a single, casual flick, he swung it.
In the littered battlefield on the ship, arcs of light appeared.
In Martin and Smoker's perspective, it looked as though Marsh was drawing countless crescent moons.
Moon Breathing: First Form - Dark Moon, Evening Palace!
The moment the first crescent arc sliced through, Mossy's right arm was severed.
But he showed the ferocity of a nearly hundred-million bounty pirate!
With a howl of pain, he grabbed his severed arm with his left hand and swung it like a weapon toward Marsh.
Fierce and fast.
But still too weak.
Marsh flickered to the side with an eerie ease, dodging the attack and kicking Mossy in the exposed abdomen, as if he were kicking away an oversized trash can.
