Chapter 8: Chapter 8 Who Are You?
The silence in the room after Laura's words was deafening. If someone breathed too loudly, everyone would know who it was.
Laura's smile was slowly turning awkward as ten seconds went by without Bryan saying anything in reply.
Seeing this, the two female friends with her stepped forward and added coquettishly.
"Laura has been planning for this day for the past six months. Imagine my surprise when she called this morning to tell me she had nothing to wear."
"We went to different places to get clothes yesterday, but none of them was fitting enough for her. At the end of the day, she just decided to wear what she had in her wardrobe. So it means a lot to her that you still say she's gorgeous, Mr. Baker."
However, Bryan still had his eyes pinned on Kelsie, but with Laura being right in front of her, everyone assumed he had his eyes pinned on her and still hadn't found his tongue.
The men standing with Bryan laughed curtly and chirped in.
"Miss Sutton must be really stunning today that he can't bring himself to say any other thing for so many seconds now."
"I almost stared at her without shame when I walked in an hour ago until I recalled she was going to become another man's wife. So his reaction doesn't surprise me at all."
"Y-you're breathtaking! How is this the first time I'm seeing you?" Bryan blurted absentmindedly again, but loud enough for everyone to hear him.
Just like the first time, Laura's cheek heated up as she blushed and fidgeted with her fingers shyly.
"Don't be like that, Bryan. If you say it more than once, the women here will start to jealous me."
Bryan said nothing as he began walking towards her direction. When he got to where she was standing, she smiled brightly and stretched her left hand for him to take like he always did.
However, to her surprise and shock, he walked past her and stopped just behind her.
Laura stiffened and slowly dropped her hand to her side.
He stopped behind her? Did he mistake her to the person standing behind her? Did they look alike or did the person happen to have on the same dress as her?
Laura questioned herself in the span of the few seconds it took her to turn around.
She raised her eyes to look at the woman he was standing in front of and felt her insides tighten at the sight of her.
All of a sudden Laura, who had always been confident in her looks, felt inferior.
How did she not see this person when she walked in earlier? Even though she had on a casual fit, she was breathtaking. But most importantly, this person looked nothing like her.
So she was very convinced Bryan made a mistake. Hence, she strutted to his side and yanked him by the hem of his suit jacket.
Then lowered her eyes to the floor and brought his attention to his mistake. "You have the wrong woman, Bryan. I'm Laura Sutton, the one you just passed. How could you mistake her to me when this woman looks nothing like me?"
Without taking the time to glance towards her direction, Bryan stretched his hand and firmly shook her hand off him.
Laura blinked in confusion and was about to ask him what he was doing when she heard him vigorously introduce himself to the woman.
"Hi, I'm the heir of the Baker family. A second-tier family here in Silicon Valley. I've met a lot of women in and out of the city and I've never seen or heard of anyone like you. Who may you be?"
To say he was astounded by such a flawless and elegant face was an understatement. He had traveled far and wide and seen a lot of women.
He relished being in the arms of beautiful women and gave them whatever they asked for just to be with them then he'd move to the next beautiful woman he saw.
But the woman standing in front of him was the first person to look this breathtaking without having done any surgery on her face.
Many of the women he had been with had all performed one surgery or the other to look better, so he was an expert at ascertaining if a woman had done facial surgery or not.
If he had a woman like this as his wife, people would surely respect him. So he made a silent vow in his heart, whoever she was, he would win her heart and make him his wife!
Seeing the broad smile on his face, Kelsie couldn't help, but feel disgusted.
She had only been here for less than an hour and she had already met most of the people who disgusted her in the past.
She wanted nothing more than to leave here, but she couldn't leave without dissolving what was left of her engagement to Bryan.
Laura gulped down and grabbed Bryan's suit jacket again.
"Bryan, what are you doing? What does it matter who she is?"
Bryan turned to the pesky voice behind him and frowned hard.
He had only agreed to marry Laura Sutton because she was way better looking compared to that ugly overweight.
Not only would he be expanding their family business by marrying into the Sutton family, but he would also not be known as the man with an overweight ugly wife.
But now that he found this beautiful woman, it didn't matter to him if she came from a reputable family or not.
Once he married her, he would help her family out of the slum and introduce her to the outside world.
Then he'd not only be known as the head of the Baker family, but also as a man who has the most beautiful wife in Silicon Valley.
As the thought took root in his heart, he furrowed his brows tightly and glared impatiently at Laura.
"What is your problem, Laura? Do you not see I'm in front of a guest? What does it matter who she is, you say."
"This is our engagement party so what is wrong with me asking a guest who she is? And besides, I saw how lonely she was sitting here all by herself, so I walked up to her to keep her company. Did I do something wrong?"
Laura's mind went blank upon hearing him and she didn't know what to think.
That was until she heard two women by her side whispering to each other.
"Mr. Baker is a really nice person. Miss Sutton is lucky to have such a caring man as her fiancé."
"Tell me about it. Even though he's the heir of such a wealthy family, he's still so down to earth and looks out for people. Even strangers."
She heaved a silent sigh of relief and smiled at him apologetically.
Of course she was overthinking it. Bryan was nice to a lot of people. This was just an example of how nice he could be.
Walking up to a stranger he didn't know just because he saw she was lonely was totally understandable for a gentlemen like him.
So she lowered her eyes to the floor and apologized, "No, you didn't. I'm sorry, Bryan. I was just overreacting."
Bryan snorted and turned away from her without another word. He returned his attention to Kelsie, his bright smiling returning as well.
"Forgive the disturbance just now, you were going to tell me your name."
Kelsie stared into his face for several seconds before she parted her lips to reply.
"Kelsie. Kelsie Sutton."
