Chapter 5: 5. Beyond the gates
They found themselves in the middle of a forest with filled with sparse trees and many flowering weeds, with no proof that they had been in any coloseum. They all rested, nursing their injuries while dusk was creeping in slowly, the sounds of strange birds screeching flying off dominated the forest air, as the howl of a wolf somewhere far away sent them flying. As though in sync, they stood to their feet and began making their way through the forests, with Hei Yue at the forefront and no destination in mind. Lily a beautiful brunette stopped suddenly, her hands on her injured legs as she panted softly. "sorry to ask this" she shouted for everyone to hear, "but does anyone know where we are headed" she said causing everyone to pause. They looked at her as though she was a strange being with two heads who was not supposed to be there, "well i mean does anyone know where we are headed" she said whispering the last part of the sentence. She waved her hands in the air signaling for them to leave"alright, alright, you can all be on your way" she said placing her hand on her chest and sitting on the floor with her back resting against a tree. "I'll be fine on my own, so you can all go without me, I'll catch up in a little bit." "I think we should all rest" Kai suggested sitting down across Lily. She looked up at the trees that darkened the forest faster than the setting dusk while nursing her left hand 'this world seems so unreal, and yet so real' she thought before closing her eyes.
Emma watched the others settle down, all of them, eleven in number, in a strange forest with no form of defense or protection, their faces blank and their futures' looking bleak, when Hei yue stood up from the floor and walked into the forest looking for dry grass, and twigs. He picked up a large amount of wood for kindling and started making his way back to the others when he heard a low growl. He knew he could die but walked on normally as though nothing was wrong coming to stand beside Emma. He pulled a dagger out of one of her leather pouches around her waist and signaled for everyone to get up and move knowing they had no chance against any wild animal, but he stood in defensive nonetheless, inching backwards slowly. The tiger jumped out of hiding, pouncing on him, as the dagger fell of his hand while many of the others fled. He tried to reach for the dagger but it was too far and so he waited for it to devour him but it looked him in the eye, got of him, glanced at the two ladies behind him who were armed with sticks and walked away. Lily helped him up to his feet, and he dusted up himself and picked the dagger up before they continued their aimless journey. They met Emma up ahead, leaning against a tree whilst waiting for them, "you're alive" she stated not looking at anyone as she walked on ahead of the rest.
Everywhere was covered in darkness, but they kept on walking on. They saw a faint light glowing in the distance and they headed on cautiously to not alert any danger that might be around. The light was coming from an old mansion with statues of humans with bats wings infront. Kai kicked the door open and Emma walked in first. The building was warm with candles lit everywhere, and they went about in pairs checking everything out. Kai and The headed upstairs, while Lily and Emma checked around the hall and the kitchen for anything that told where they were, but they found nothing. There were strange pictures hung around the walls of the hall depicting gruesome deaths in different ways. Emma walked towards the fireplace the words written in bold letters in the picture above caught her attention "Keep on asking and it will be given you, keep on seeking and you will find, keep on knocking and the door will be open to you". She walked inched closer to the picture when Kai called for their attention upstairs. They claimed the stairs walking through the passage filled with several terrifying sculptures, Emma looked intensely at the one of a night crawler before she walked into the open door of the study. Some candles along the passage were blown off by some strangeas the image of the creeper blinked.
It was a map of their immediate surroundings, with strange inscriptions on it and some short notes with a shabby handwriting on the edge of it. "Apparently, this place is Myrna island and this is the mansion of gallows" she said her brows squeezing together in confusion. Emma blinked before reading out the words written in the picture over the study's fire place "night cometh when no man can work."
