Chapter 7: Uninvited Guests

Every bend we took, in every corner, I could almost taste the rotten smell of something dead or dying. This whole place reeked but we couldn't see where the smell was coming from, there was no buzzing flies or indication of a corpse. There was just darkness, the only source of light we had now were 3 battery powered torches, it seemed the teacher came adequately prepared.

"Hey I found something!" Thorn yelled, he was the one holding one of the torches.

Everyone ran towards where he stood as he pointed to the floor.

"Dry blood" The teacher said, after observing it for a while.

"Seems something happened here, probably to the kid...." the teacher said

"...the blood leaves a trail" he pointed his torch forward revealing more dried up blood forming a trail going forward.

"Should we follow?" The boy asked

"We have no choice" the teacher replied, hence continued the relentless walking.

We followed the trail until we got to a dead end.

"Great! Now we have to go back" someone behind me said

"No not really, look up" the teacher said.

There was a opening above us but in order to reach it, we needed a ladder.

"That's not right, ther..... there's suppose to be a ladder fixed to the wall" the guard with us said, pointing to a battered up wall.

"How the hell are we suppose to get up there?" I asked.

"Biggie, can you lend a hand?" The teacher said .

The huge man stood directly underneath the opening with his fingers interlocked, the teacher took a few steps back and ran towards him and jumped on Biggie's interlocked hands after which he was thrown upwards. He struggled holding on to the edge but eventually he was able to climb up.

"Boss, what do you see?!" Thorn asked

"I'm in a storage room, hold on I think there's a rope here" he replied.

A few seconds later a rope was thrown down.

"Alright, who goes up first?" Thorn asked.

"I'll go" the boy said. We stood there and watched him pull his way up and when he was safely on the other side, Thorn turned to the guard

"You're up next"

"O.....ok" he said and began making his way up. After the guard came me, then Thorn followed by P and lastly the big guy.

"What is this place?" P asked the guard.

"Its a morgue" He replied.

"A morgue?" Thorn asked.

"The bodies got to go somewhere right?" The teacher pushed open the door and as we came out the storage room we entered a walk way, at the end of a walk was an exit. The room was dim, the only source of light was the exit sign from the exit. The teacher pulled out his torched he had tucked in his waist when he climbed up and turned it on revealing bodies and tables littered all over the place.

"Well atleast we found out where the smell is coming from" the boy said.

I couldn't hold myself and I threw up instantly. Everyone gave me space so I didn't throw up on them

"This bodies could have been here for days" Biggie said.

"So are you going to tell us what the hell is this?" Teacher asked, addressing the guard.

"I told you, its a morgue" He said

"What type of f**ked up morgue has bodies on the floor?" P asked.

"I......I don't know, there's someone here who takes care of the bodies" he said. He was sounding like he would burst into tears any minute.

"Hey, this one is still alive" Biggie said, he had wandered from our pack and was a few feets away. I didn't even realise when he moved.

The teacher rushed to see the person, he wore a lab coat and was bleeding from his side.

"Please, help me" He said, his voice was shaky.

"What happened here?" The teacher asked.

"Child came with guard....." He stopped talking as he was in extreme pain.

He pulled out his phone from his pocket and stretched it to the teacher.

"Call him, tell him an activated has escaped" he whispered and then laid back as he tried to breath slowly.

"What's an activated?" Biggie asked.

"I think we should leave right now" the guard said.

"What is going on?" P asked.

"Yeah, why the rush?" The boy asked.

"I........I.......I....." He didn't get to speak before the doors burst open suddenly, a lot of lights were pointing directly at us,

"Freeze! Get down on you knees!!" Yelled a voice. It happened so fast even before I understood what was happening. We were all handcuffed and dragged outside, it was already dark when we were dragged outside.

We were made to kneel side by side with each other

"Is this all?" Asked one of them.

"Yes sir, no one else is alive in the building" another replied. They were all dressed in black but I could tell they were military and I guess so could everyone else.

"I'm a bit surprised they sent the military, seems our buddies has friends in high places. Do you plan to kill us here and get rid of our bodies?" The teacher asked.

"Wait, I was dragged here against my own will, please help......" The guard didn't get to complete that statement, one of them pulled out his dagger and stabbed him in the throat. The guard forced out a choking sound as the blade was slowly pulled out his throat, after which his assailant proceeded to stabbing him multiple times on his body till he dropped to the floor.

The first one who spoke stood watching it all go down.

"Alright, who's next. Any volunteers?" He asked with a sinister grin.

"Your guy is sloppy" The teacher said. Another one suddenly ran towards the first and gave him a phone, the first one took the phone and walked away from us to answer it.

The one with the dagger had walked up to the teacher and grabbed him by the hair, he was about to land his killing blow when the first one yelled

"Stop!"

"The boss needs them alive, it seems there were more of them who escaped." He said.

"Do we really need all of them alive, maybe we could kill some, what do you think?" Said the second one his hand with the dagger still in the air and the other on the teacher's hair.

"Don't worry sunshine. I'll make sure they are returned to you alive when we're done interrogating them." Replied the first with his grin still on his face.

The third one who had approached earlier with the phone came back again

"What is it?" The first asked.

"The second team has located the activated" the third said.

"Are they sure its him?"

"Affirmative, Sir" replied the third.

"Alright everyone, load them into the trucks, let's move out!" The first yelled.

We were dragged into their trucks, but we were separated. I was in the same truck with the teacher and boy, the first and about 4 of his men were our bodyguards including the guy with the dagger.

Soon we were on the move.

There was silent for a while everyone kept staring at each other unsure of what we'd do at any given moment

"It looks like a long journey, shouldn't we get to know each other?" The teacher asked, finally breaking the silence.

The first one smiled, he was holding on to the teacher's gun.

"Very well then" he said.

"My name is Tea, Professor Tea" said the teacher.

"And my name is death" came the reply.

"Very well then, riddle me something, death. How does someone like your self end up working for the likes of some dudes who run a pharmacy?" The teacher asked. Death burst into laughter.

"I like you, after we've made you sing your heart out maybe we could get to know each other better" he said.

"You must be Helen" he said, now addressing me.

"You really have no idea who you just messed with" He said and continued laughing.

"They were experimenting on people back there, kids for godsake" I said probably hoping they were the ones who were in the dark.

"And what? You think your actions saved anybody? Do you know how many more lives you've put in jeopardy with your little stunt? You have no idea the setbacks you have forced on us" Death said, he was now getting angrier as he spoke.

"Jeopardy. That's a pretty fancy word for someone like you" The teacher said.

"And what exactly is someone like me?" Death asked.

"Killer, Assassin...... Mercenary"

Death grinned,

"I've always hated that term" He said.

"What term do you prefer?" Teacher asked.

"Soldiers for hire, seems more reasonable. After all that is what we are" Death said.

"Did you also hire out your soul or you sold it completely?" I asked, I was beginning to get pissed off by his smug look.

He looked at me, there was no malice in his eyes he didn't even grin at me.

"You know before we were sent to come look for you guys, I went through your file. It said you were discharged for something....I seem to have forgotten exactly what it was, can you remind me?" He said, his eyes locked on me.

I smiled. He knew what I did, he just wanted me to say it.

"I believe it was something about stabbing a senior officer with a pencil" I said

Death burst into laughter

"And you guys wanna know the funny part?" Death said addressing his men.

"She was discharged honourably, because as it turns out the officer in question was about to commit acts of genocide" he said. There was a moment of silence, everyone seem to have been staring at me

"So as to your question....." He continued

"....it wouldn't matter what I did with my soul, you carry enough for everyone else."

"What's an activated?" Teacher asked

"What?" Said Death.

"You said we're going to be singing our hearts out but before that I'm curious, what's an activated?"

"Wait you mean......?" Death burst into laughter.

"You f**kers have no clue what's really going on do you?"

There was a moment of silence which was quickly broken by Death's uncontrollable laughter, the rest of his gang slowly began joining him.

Suddenly the driver banged on the wall

"2 minutes out!" he yelled. His announcement was followed by a chilling silence.

"Alright boys game time" Death said.

The men with him began checking their ammunitions, I watched 3 of them take out the safety from their guns.

"I thought we were hunting a child?" I asked.

"Don't worry sugar, you'll be fine" Death said with a grin.

"A lot of reloads going on in here for a kid, I feel a growing need to be concerned." Teacher said.

"Why don't you shut up and let us do our jobs" Death said, he didn't grin this time. I could tell he was no longer comfortable.

He began muttering something to himself I couldn't hear what he was saying but the teacher was the closest to him and he must have heard something because his expression changed.

He leaned back and whispered

"Boy?" I had almost forgotten about him this whole time and I'm guessing so did the guards. He sat closer to the door and through out the journey he had his head bowed, not paying attention to any of the conversation.

The vehicle suddenly screeched to a stop, Death yelled at the drivers

"Hey, what's going on?" As he spoke the last word we heard screams

"What the hell was that?" I asked.

"Diablo!" Yelled the second man and he pointed his gun at the doors as he made a sign of the cross.

Death was busy on his radio

"Can anyone read me?!" He yelled but no reply

"What's happening boss?" Another of them asked.

"I'm guessing the first team made contact...... "

"Alright!" He yelled, he was trying to force out every bit of courage necessary to face what ever was out there.

"Unlock the door" He said, pointing his gun at the door; he had tucked the teacher's gun in his pants.

The second guy slowly and carefully unlocked the door without opening it, he then took a few step back not wanting to be the first one outside.

"Why don't we send them out?" He whispered to death.

Death nodded and they quickly began releasing the cuffs while Death and the second guy had their gun on us so we wouldn't try anything.

"Ladies first" Death said. I walked to the door, I tried paying attention for any movement outside.

It was quiet, too quiet. In that short few seconds it felt like the world had stopped, I took a deep breath and pushed open the door.

The moment the door swung open I heard a gun shot, I felt it hit me right in my spine.

I could hear the teacher scream my name but I couldn't move, it felt like the pain gripped my entire body. I collapsed forward hitting my head on the concrete floor.

I couldn't tell who pulled the trigger, I couldn't even fathom why, why this very moment?

I laid on the cold concrete floor, slowly bleeding out from my back and the head wound sustained when I crashed. I tried breathing as slowly as I could but I was sure this was going to be the end.
