Chapter 12: Chapter 12 - Tragedy
At that moment, Percy Jackson was anxious and very angry, but beneath all of that, there was a huge concern for his best friend who had decided to stay behind and fight monsters he thought had come out of the books his Latin teacher gave him for school assignments.
He still remembered the moment they met. It was during his first day at a children's school, he wasn't doing well making friends as usual. Sad about this, he stayed in a relatively remote corner and watched the other kids, until his eyes landed on another boy who was like him; completely isolated.
The little boy in question looked like an angel, and this proved true when he accepted to be his friend and became practically a brother over the years. And now, he was in danger, and there was nothing he could do to help. Besides entering the property where his mother was trying to bring both of them, the only hope was that someone there could deal with the monsters and save his friend.
At no point did he think of the possibility that Ikki could die, since he couldn't imagine such a thing. And his confidence came from the fact that incident at the museum; his friend had killed one of those monsters before, although he wasn't so sure about that, it was a small spark of hope that his friend would survive long enough for help to arrive.
"Let's hurry, mom." Percy said with one of his other friend's arms over his shoulders, his mom was on the other side, holding the other arm the same way.
The two were going as fast as possible toward the hill, but hearing the crashes from where his friend was, he felt an immense need to hurry.
Sally, who was also deeply concerned about Ikki, nodded and the two hurried even more.
After some tense moments, where both thought it had been hours without end, they finally reached the hill. The sight of a house in the middle of a field confirmed their arrival; at that moment, the rain also stopped. As if the heavens were congratulating them for their achievement.
The storm still roared, but only in the distance.
"We just need to get to that cabin..." Sally seemed almost relieved when she said these words.
"Let's go quickly then..." Percy said, worried, as the sounds of fighting couldn't be heard from this distance. And this was making him even more anxious and worried.
When the two were about to descend the hill... A whip as fast as lightning wrapped around Percy's leg, and he was pulled and thrown against a tree, hitting his head and falling unconscious... In the brief moments before entering the realm of unconsciousness, he saw the same whip wrap around his mother's neck, shocked by the recent events, and a second later, she exploded into golden flames.
His last thought was a scream of panic and horror that no one could hear.
The cause of these events was the last Fury who had dragged his body up to the hill with sheer determination. She smiled when she saw that her work was done, but this lasted only a second, before her head was struck by a fist that fell like a hammer, crushing her head and creating a huge crater in the process.
The hill and the surroundings shook from the power of that attack.
Ikki looked at the Fury that had exploded into golden dust, his gaze had traces of anger and guilt. He had thought the monster had died from his kick, and this; his friend's mother dying, happened because of his guilt.
Sally was a wonderful woman, she had always treated him like a second son practically. She was also his mother's best friend, and one of the only people who made her smile and be happy...
And she had just died...
He took a deep breath to calm himself, it wasn't the time to be overwhelmed by his emotions since he could feel more monsters coming his way, with a grim look he checked on his two friends. Both were fine and just unconscious, he looked at the cabin in the middle of the field below the hill; and without saying a word, he put his friends on his shoulders and took them there.
After a few minutes, he was just a few meters away from the front of the lit house. Inside the porch, below a ceiling fan spinning above me, moths flying around a yellow light, there was a familiar bearded man with a stern expression and a beautiful girl with curly blonde hair like a princess.
Despite the distance, Ikki could still hear the loud and clear voice of the girl next to the man: "It's him. It has to be."
"Silence, Annabeth." The man said in a commanding tone: "This is not a good time to discuss or talk about this..."
Ikki stopped his steps in front of the entrance of the porch, the light illuminated his appearance for the man and the girl inside. He looked at the first one and said, confused.
"Mr. Brunner? Do you teach Latin to the Half-Bloods too?"
His question made his former Latin teacher's lips curve upward before he spoke: "You could say that, yes. But let's not talk about that for now, we need to take the two of them to the infirmary..."
He gestured toward Percy and Grover on his shoulders with his head, before turning to the girl beside him and calmly asking.
"Annabeth, can you help Ikki with this?..."
The girl in question was completely absorbed in looking at Ikki standing before her. Her eyes were so unfocused, and a slight shade of red could be seen on her cheeks.
This kind of perfection surpassed nature itself! She felt that these words were the only ones appropriate to describe the boy in front of her. Besides, the more she looked at him, the more she wanted to keep looking.
She could stare at him for eternity, and never get tired.
Ikki noticed her state and sighed in his mind. He had forgotten his [Presence Manipulation] was turned off, he turned it off due to the loss of control over his emotions earlier, by this point, it was too late, the girl was already enchanted... Fortunately, he hadn't released the full effect of his beauty actively, he doubted that Chiron would be immune at this point...
And to be honest, he wasn't in the mood to keep this ability active at the moment...
Unfortunately, this ability required precise control over his vital energy, something that was lacking due to his unfocused state. Everything passing through his mind now was how he would face his friend, he couldn't save his aunt and someone who treated him like a son over the years...
"Annabeth!"
"..."
"Annabeth!!"
"..."
"Annabeth!!!"
Only after Mr. Brunner called her name three times did she manage to snap out of her stupor. She stammered incoherently: "S-sure, Chiron..."
"Show Ikki to the infirmary…" Said the Latin teacher, letting out a light sigh upon seeing the state of the usually calm girl.
"Of course... Follow me." Even embarrassed, the girl looked at Ikki and said before heading inside the house.
Ikki followed her calmly, the porch surrounded the entire farmhouse.
The infirmary was at one of the last doors on the right side of the porch, it was one of those typical camp ones in the middle of a forest. After placing both of them in separate beds, Ikki turned his attention to the girl who was standing a few meters beside him.
With a critical air and a serious expression, broken by the small red tint on her cheeks, she extended her hand and introduced herself:
"Hm... My name is Annabeth Chase, nice to meet you."
"Ikki Phoenix... The pleasure is mine. I hope we can be good friends." Ikki said, shaking the girl's hand, who seemed to look at the gesture in a trance. Her gray eyes, like storm clouds; beautiful, looked at him for a moment, before both released the handshake in mutual agreement.
She took a deep breath to calm her turbulent emotions and thoughts about the appearance of the boy in front of her and said.
"Let's go! Chiron probably wants to talk to you."
Ikki nodded and the two headed back to the porch. Where his former Latin teacher was calmly waiting for them.
As soon as they arrived, the older man gestured for him to sit in a chair while saying: "Sit down. You probably have a lot of questions for me, let's talk..."
"To begin with, it would be great if you could explain what my Latin teacher is doing in this place…" Ikki said, calmly sitting in the seat that had been pointed out. He saw Annabeth stand beside Mr. Brunner.
"Well, the answer to that is simple. I am one of the heads of the place. But the explanation can wait for later. First, let me introduce myself. My real name is Chiron..."
"Mr. Brunner was just my identity in the mortal world…" Said Chiron, introducing himself and explaining a bit, without giving him too much information.
"I see. So where's your horse part? I know about this place, about the Half-Bloods, Gods, and monsters. And now you have the same name as the famous trainer of heroes in Greek origin stories. I don't think this is just a coincidence, is it?..." Ikki said, placing his hand on his chin thoughtfully, looking at his former teacher with bright eyes.
"Smart as always..." Chiron couldn't help but compliment before explaining: "My horse part is hidden by this magical wheelchair... A detailed explanation of how it works would take too long."
Ikki nodded calmly, he wasn't interested in how the magical item worked. If it only served to hide the horse half of the legendary trainer of heroes in front of him, it wasn't useful to him at all.
"Ikki, I would like to know... How did you find out about the Greek world?" Chiron asked, somewhat curious, as this was quite uncommon. Most Half-Bloods didn't know about their heritage and even less believed they were the offspring of a Divinity with a mortal.
"It wasn't hard, the main clue was the event at the museum with one of Hades' minions. I believe everything I see, just as I distrust everything I haven't seen with my own eyes... Taking this belief into account, it was easy to guess that if the monsters were real, the Gods were too…"
"Now, how did I know I was a Half-Blood? I was never normal."
Ikki sighed and explained calmly, leaving the girl in front of him and Chiron surprised by his words.
Annabeth for a moment thought she had found another brother, another child of Athena like herself, but that couldn't be true...? The boy in front of her had black hair and blue eyes like agates surrounded by electricity. Even so, it could be a possibility since he was very sharp.
Even she had to admit that his deductions were extremely accurate and his belief also matched that of a child of the Goddess of Wisdom.
While the girl was having her own thoughts, Chiron got curious about something and asked.
"You were never normal? How exactly did you find out about your identity as a child of a God?..."
"I didn't have a logical explanation before, but I always felt an infinite amount of strength in my body, and everything around me is very slow. Like my perception was in another territory compared to normal people."
Ikki explained with the same calmness as always.
Chiron placed his hand on his chin thoughtfully and asked.
"Can you tell me the story of your journey up to here?.."
Ikki nodded and began telling the whole process, hiding some details he thought wouldn't be relevant to the conversation.
After hearing about his recent battle against an army of several monsters and not seeing any wounds on his body, besides his slightly torn clothes, the two were surprised in different ways.
"Well, it seems you have the same strength as Hercules or maybe even stronger..." Murmured Chiron after hearing the story. As someone who had lived for centuries, it was hard for anything to surprise him for long.
With Annabeth, her reaction was different, her eyes widened and she doubted the words of the boy in front of her. However, he didn't seem to be lying at any moment. She took a deep breath to calm her emotions, which were in a turbulent vortex; where in the middle was the shock and fascination of someone so beautiful; so much that it was hard to take her eyes off him and impossible to get tired of looking at his appearance.
"Now that I've explained my version of the story, I'd like to know the details about this place..." Ikki said, crossing his arms in a waiting posture.
Chiron smiled and began explaining about the Half-Blood camp and its origins, which was basically a secret training ground for Greek Half-Bloods located on Long Island. Its director is Dionysus (who is called "Mr. D") and his former Latin teacher.
After half an hour of explanation, which Ikki already knew from the book.
Chiron finally finished, he looked at Ikki with a smile and asked: "Do you have any more doubts or questions?"
"Actually, I was going to ask about my apparent divine Father. But I guess that's something I need to discover on my own at this camp, right?..."
"Oh? How did you guess?"
"It was just a guess, since you never mentioned him to me. If I had to bet, it has to do with a ritual for the divinity to claim its offspring."
Ikki let out a sigh and spoke casually. His deduction surprised the only other individuals besides him on the porch.
"Really, your deductions are somewhat frightening in their accuracy. You're right, to know who your father is, you'll have to be claimed by him. All that's left for us is to wait..." Chiron said, praising the boy and adding a few details to his precise deduction.
"So, I was right..." Ikki said, smiling slightly, which left Annabeth next to Chiron enchanted by his perfect appearance.
She felt her heart almost leap out of her chest from how fast it was beating. At that moment, Ikki was like a black hole pulling everyone's focus onto him due to his otherworldly appearance. To be honest, she found it absolutely impossible for any divinity to assume such a beautiful appearance as his...
And she wasn't wrong...
"If that's all, I think you should have a good night's sleep. Tomorrow, I'll send someone to fetch you to show you the camp." Chiron said, deciding to end the conversation for now.
He found it a little pleasant the way it unfolded. Usually, he had to calm the Half-Blood and explain in a way that soothed their nerves, and despite not minding and even liking it to some extent, sometimes it was good to break the pattern.
"Alright..." Ikki nodded his head before scratching his head in confusion and asking: "Am I staying in the infirmary? Or is there another place good enough for me to sleep?"
Quíron let out a short laugh before saying, "Since it's already late, you'll stay in the infirmary."
"Alright..." Ikki said calmly, he wished them both "good night" and entered the house heading toward the infirmary.
After he left, Annabeth finally snapped out of the stupor caused by the boy's appearance.
"Handsome?" Quíron asked with an amused smile at the girl.
"An incomparable masterpiece."
Annabeth automatically nodded her head and said, before turning as red as a tomato, making the centaur laugh. She stammered before embarrassedly leaving the porch and heading to her cabin.
"The camp just got a lot more interesting..." Quíron said to himself, imagining the chaos that Percy and Ikki's arrival would cause.
