Chapter 826: CH205 (819), Got To Adapt On The Fly Sometimes

"Both combatants are unable to battle. Please recall your fallen Pokemon and ready your next combatants," the referee declared after being interrupted by Ryujin/Gyarados' fall. We both recalled our Pokemon, and I made sure to say some nice words to Ryujin even though I was not sure if he could hear them since he had been running on instinct alone during the last bit. Regardless, I directly placed him inside Utopia so that he could recover before picking up Osiris/Skellibra's DDBall.

"Incredible," Ryujin suddenly let out after recalling her Kingdra. "I thought you'd need at least two Pokemon to take King down, but you managed to do it with just one," she followed up sounding impressed, and there were a bunch of murmurs coming from the audience. "A very impressive Gyarados you have there, and definitely worthy of being called Ryujin," she said the last bit with a playful smile which triggered some laughs and excited cries from the audience members who could no longer keep it down even if their idol was speaking.

"I'll make sure to pass on the compliment," I responded with a smile of my own while ignoring the shouts that told me to stop acting cool, though my lips twitched for a moment when I heard Mom shout back, telling them to shut up. *chuckle* "Passionate, aren't they," Ryujin said after chuckling at the exchange before grabbing a PokeBall from her belt.

"You've done well so far," she then commended me before her face lost all playfulness. "Let's see if you can keep that up," she challenged me which the referee took as his signal to start the countdown. We released our Pokemon as soon as the signal was given, and while Osiris appeared on my side, a Dragonite appeared on the other side of the battlefield.

I saw Ryujin's eyes sparkle with interest when she saw Skellibra/Osiris, though they hardened pretty quickly, probably because she was in work mode. I would have smiled at that, but I was more focused on the fact we would be facing a pseudo-legendary/apex dragon already, and a Dragonite at that. Skellibra were frontal fighters that were much worse at energy attacks, and while Dragonite were stronger in frontal battles as well, their energy attacks were pretty good as well.

That was going to make all the difference here since I was absolutely certain that Ryujin and her Dragonite were going to make this an aerial battle on their part. Osiris was not a good match-up for a flying dragon such as Dragonite, and the only worse apex dragon he could have faced would have been Salamance. Why couldn't she have gone with a Garchomp or a Kommo-o instead? At least Osiris would have been able to properly battle those.

As things stood, he would have to try to somehow ground Dragonite first before preventing it from taking off again if he wanted to win. Well, at least, the Dragonite was only at the (high) dark gold stage, so even if the odds were stacked against Osiris, they were nowhere near unbeatable, especially since my dragon only had to worry about dragon moves. I was looking forward to seeing them try to use ice moves against Osiris only to see that they were nowhere near as effective as they should have been. It was just unfortunate that we could not take advantage of Dragonite's major weakness since Osiris knew no ice moves.

While those thoughts flitted through my mind, the two dragons initiated their opening moves. Osiris aware of the fact that he could not allow Dragonite to get away, raised his bone sword/club and channeled electricity through it to release a Thunder Strike at Dragonite. Dragonite, who had started a Dragon Dance, was able to barely fly over the electric current, though it failed to do so entirely since its tail got grazed/singed in the process.

Some of the electricity passed along Dragonite's body but it was barely enough to be a nuisance, so it did not affect Dragonite's subsequent retaliatory Ice Beam. We did not miss the light blue glow swiftly amassing at Dragonite's maw, so Osiris directly went for a Flamethrower to block the Ice Beam. If Osiris had tried to dodge instead, all Dragonite would have needed to do, thanks to its airborne position, was to tilt its head to adjust the angle. Yet, now, Osiris' Flamethrower intercepted the Ice Beam and prevented it from coming any closer.

Unfortunately, due to Osiris' shortcoming, at least compared to Dragonite, the Flamethrower was unable to overpower the Ice Beam, so a stalemate took place that lasted for nearly 20 seconds before the two dragons had to break off the beam struggle. As soon as it cut off the Ice Beam, Dragonite put more distance between itself and Osiris, which allowed it to indirectly dodge the Thunderbolt Osiris quickly followed up with.

Knowing that hitting Dragonite was going to be an uphill battle, I had Osiris shift gears. He initiated a Dragon Dance while keeping an eye on Dragonite. Meanwhile, Ryujin ordered an Ice Beam, which Osiris first sidestepped, then flipped over after Dragonite adjusted its head angle, and that while still maintaining the Dragon Dance. Dragonite kept the Ice Beam going and continued to move its head to change the beam's course, forcing Osiris to dance around the battlefield/ground to dodge it.

The crowd was quite astounded that Osiris was able to dodge the Ice Beam like that with his size, and I had to admit that it was not easy for Osiris to do what he was doing. Him keeping the Dragon Dance going as he was, prolonged the duration it took for the Dragon Dance to finally take effect, but close to 40 seconds in, it finally happened, and the moment he was able to use another move, I had him use Earth Power, causing the ground beside him to erupt. The eruption not only blocked the Ice Beam that was closing in, but it also obscured everyone's sight.

"Move around," Ryujin ordered the moment Osiris' figure was obscured by the earth, and I had to suppress a frown at that since it would make our subsequent plans harder. Just a few seconds later everyone was able to see that Osiris had vanished from sight and unlike the audience, it was clear that Ryujin was not surprised. Osiris had dug down moments after using Earth Power and had Ryujin not ordered Dragonite to move around, Osiris would have tried to snipe its back, more specifically its wings, with a Thunder Strike.

As things stood, he couldn't do that, at least not directly. All we could do lay in wait and hope that Dragonite would pass by at the right angle before the 3-minute Dig allowance was up. Consequently, a minute passed without anything happening really, since Osiris was waiting below the surface and Dragonite was semi-randomly cruising through the air. Well, we were naturally not just twiddling our thumbs while we waited since that would have been a waste.

Osiris was alternating between Iron Defense and Focus Energy as he waited for Dragonite. Even when the end of the second minute was approaching, our stand-off still persisted while the audience was starting to get restless. Just when I thought that things were looking like we would either have to take some risks or be forced to come up, the situation changed. Ryujin called for a Hydro Pump, and Dragonite with an until now unseen speed closed in on the hole left behind by Dig before firing a Hydro Pump down the hole.

Dragonite's speed was much faster than expected, which was why Osiris failed to react even though Dragonite passed by him, giving him the opening we had been waiting for. It was clear that Dragonite must have kept using Agility while cruising through the air. Well, that, or it used Agility only once or twice and its extreme speed was due to it using Extremespeed to head for the hole. Either way, I quickly think of a way to take advantage of the situation.

Through our telepathic link, I let Osiris know that he should go up a bit more until he was just below the surface before I let him fire off a Thunderbolt down the tunnel behind him. By the time he did that, he informed me that he could see the water rushing at him, and two things happened simultaneously. Osiris quickly broke out of the ground and rolled to the side to dodge the sparkling water while Dragonite barely escaped getting electrocuted by cutting off its Hydro Pump at Ryujin's timely order.

That did not help Dragonite against the Discharge that Osiris discharged as he was rolling/dodging away from the charged water spout that came after him. Dragonite cried out in pain as the Discharge hit it, though that only lasted for a few moments before the cries stopped, and I noticed that its tail was stuck in the ground sporting a grey sheen. Dragonite then released a growl, which culminated in it releasing a Dragon Pulse at Osiris, who had stopped in place at this point.

We had a few seconds before the Dragon Pulse would hit and Osiris used the time to simultaneously throw out his Bone Sword/Club using Bonemerang, and his Bone Shield using Shielmerang before barely managing to confront the Dragon Pulse with Dragon Claw. He was able to do so without suffering any damage, at least during the few moments that confrontation lasted before Dragonite was forced to abort its Dragon Pulse to dodge the bone sword heading for its belly and the bone shield aimed at its head.

It had no time to follow up with a counterattack because it had to dodge not only the returning bone sword and shield but also the Thunder Strike Osiris followed up with. Thanks to Osiris' maneuvering, Dragonite had no choice but to tank one of the attacks, and it chose to block the bone shield with its left arm, which had it grunt in pain, to successfully dodge the more dangerous Thunder Strike and bone sword. Osiris caught the bone sword/club while the bone shield fell to the ground beneath Dragonite after hitting its arm.

Osiris rushed towards Dragonite while using Discharge, which Dragonite smoothly dodged thanks to its speed before retaliating with an Ice Beam. Osiris, who had actually been rushing toward his bone shield, then did a forward roll to escape the Ice Beam. He grabbed his shield just as Dragonite tilted its head and nailed Osiris with Ice Beam, or so it looked at first glance. Yet, Osiris managed to place his shield in the way of the Ice Beam, avoiding a direct hit, though that did not stop the shield from starting to frost over, along with the arm holding the bone shield.

Still, ice built up aside, thanks to his missing ice weakness, the damage Osiris suffered during all this was minimal. He still faked a struggle so that he could prepare a Thunder Strike on the side. Once Osiris had built up the charge to the maximum he could, which would have been impossible to do without releasing sparks from the body if he was not a ground type, he channeled the electric energy towards to bone sword in his other hand before unleashing an overcharged Thunder Strike straight at Dragonite, who was still trying to freeze Osiris over using Ice Beam.

The plan worked and Thunder Strike hit Dragonite causing it to cry out in pain and its body to seize up, resulting in it falling from the sky. Seeing Dragonite fall, Osiris directly rushed toward it, and he made it there before Dragonite was able to take off again. Osiris directly attacked Dragonite with a Dragon Claw, forcing the dragon that had barely managed to stand up to face/block his attack head-on. Nonetheless, just because Ryujin and her Dragonite tried to take advantage of Skellibra's relative weakness, one should not forget that Dragonite was a physical powerhouse, so despite being forced into the confrontation, Dragonite was able to match Osiris blow for blow.
