Kalia observed Charmander's determination to battle, feeling it was quite unusual for him. Although Charmander no longer despised fighting, during rest periods, he would revert to his lazy self, hoping food would magically fly into his mouth.
"Alright then," Kalia agreed. It just so happened that Charmander had recently learned Rock-Type Hidden Power, providing an opportunity for practical training.
Zach, with his mature dragon-type Axew, likely possessed considerable strength and could prove to be a formidable opponent.
Zach felt elated; encountering this Charmander again seemed like sheer luck. This time, he wouldn't fail-he vowed to decisively defeat the Charmander.
To enhance Axew's combat abilities, Zach not only conducted special training but also purchased several Move Disks. While Axew hadn't mastered all of them yet, it had indeed learned some highly effective moves.
Additionally, Axew independently grasped two new techniques, one being Scary Face. By conjuring terrifying ghostly expressions, it could instill fear in opposing Pokemon, significantly reducing their speed.
With Scary Face at its disposal, there was no need to worry about Charmander's speed advantage. Considering Charmander's defense capabilities, without its speed, Axew could instantly defeat it with a single Dragon Claw move.
"I'll be the referee," Julian offered voluntarily.
"No objections," Zach replied indifferently. Whether there was a referee or not didn't concern him; he already envisioned Charmander being defeated by Axew.
Kalia and Zach agreed to battle in a clear area devoid of other Pokemon. Although lacking formal arena boundaries, this impromptu match didn't require such strict adherence.
The format would be 2v2, using a rotation system. As Julian announced the start of the battle, both trainers sent out their first Pokemon.
Lian observed the opposing Axew across from him. In just over ten days, Axew seemed to have grown stronger, but so had he—now capable of enduring even a direct hit from Axew's Dragon Claw.
"Axew, use Scary Face!" From the onset, Zach issued his command, well aware that Lian's most notable trait was his speed. Limiting that would make things easier for him.
Kalia found it peculiar; Zach appeared quite familiar with Charmander, immediately employing the status-changing move Scary Face to restrict Charmander's speed right from the start.
"Charmander, close your eyes," Kalia promptly responded. The best counter to such moves was simply shutting its eyes, preventing any impact from Scary Face.
After Axew unleashed the Scary Face move, a terrifying ghostly face materialized out of thin air, sending chills down anyone's spine as it swiftly approached Lian.
Lian decisively closed his eyes, avoiding the sight of that horrifying face. Despite this, he still felt a slight unease, which was the residual effect of Scary Face.
Staring directly at the ghostly face would induce intense fear, reducing speed—a phenomenon often described as being scared stiff.
"Axew, charge forward and use Dragon Claw!" Zach quickly commanded Axew to attack, surprised by Kalia's extensive battle experience. However, recalling how Charmander had instinctively closed its eyes against Confuse Ray last time, it wasn't entirely unexpected.
During this period, Zach focused on training Axew's speed, even enduring the pain of purchasing several expensive Carbos, each costing 9,800 Alliance Coins.
Now, Axew's speed had significantly improved, although possibly not yet matching Charmander's, but enough to get closer for direct combat.
"Charmander, open your eyes and unleash Dragon Breath."
Kalia pointed out that although Dragon Rage is also a powerful dragon-type move, based on her analysis of various battle videos, she knew it doesn't provide type advantage regardless of whether the opponent's Pokemon is a dragon-type or not.
Conversely, Dragon Breath would be most effective against Axew.
As Kalia spoke, Lian had already opened his eyes, anticipating Zach's command. However, he waited until Kalia confirmed before acting, to avoid any potential deception from Zach.
Upon opening his eyes, Lian saw Axew rapidly approaching at considerable speed, nearly reaching him.
Quickly gathering Dragon-type energy, he transformed it into a fierce breath and exhaled directly towards Axew.
The force of this breath whipped up intense gusts, bending the grass beneath them, as it surged towards Axew.
"Axew, hold on! Use Dragon Claw!" Zach commanded. Axew was now very close to Charmander, just a fraction away. If it could withstand this Dragon Breath, it would reach Charmander and unleash its Dragon Claw.
The intense Dragon Breath repeatedly struck Axew, forcing it to arch its body and resist. However, with Lian's current Special Attack Attribute value, the power of his Dragon Breath was significantly stronger than before.
In no time, numerous wounds appeared on Axew's body. Once the Dragon Breath ceased, Axew swayed unsteadily, appearing almost on the verge of collapsing due to exhaustion.
"How is this possible?" Zach stood dumbfounded, struggling to believe what he saw. His Axew had clearly become much stronger, even mastering the Crunch move, with notable improvements in various ability values. Yet, after enduring just one Dragon Breath, it seemed close to losing its fighting capability.
During their encounter at Kana Mountains, Axew had withstood Charmander's Dragon Breath three times before finally succumbing. How could there be such a significant difference within only a few days?
Axew was now in immense pain; the damage from Dragon Breath was overwhelming. It couldn't comprehend how a single Dragon Breath nearly defeated it instantly.
Observing Axew's struggle to maintain balance, Lian inwardly smirked. His current Special Attack Attribute value had reached Limit +40, equivalent to 100 points in base stat for Special Attack. With a doubly effective Dragon Breath, considering Axew's mere 40 points in Special Defense base stat, it hadn't been instantly knocked out solely because Axew's level was considerably higher.
"Axew, hold on and use Rest," Zach commanded. He still had a chance, as one of the Move Disks he purchased was for the Rest move, which Axew conveniently learned.
The Rest move consumes a Pokemon's internal energy to induce sleep, allowing its body to self-recover fully from injuries and restore mental state.
However, the main drawback is that during sleep, the Pokemon cannot continue battling, and their internal energy is not infinite; excessive use can harm the Pokemon's health.
"Rest move?" Kalia was somewhat surprised, as Axew could not naturally learn Rest without a Move Disk. Purchasing a legitimate Rest Move Disk typically costs at least 3,000 Alliance Coins.
Most Trainers would hesitate to spend such a sum on a Rest Move Disk, preferring instead to buy defensive moves like Light Screen or Reflect. These defensive strategies are more suitable for tougher, resilient Pokemon compared to Axew.
At this moment, having Axew use Rest seems unwise compared to substituting with another Pokemon. While Axew is asleep, Charmander can easily launch another attack.
If Axew fails to wake up promptly, it will likely result in another defeat, given the high damage caused by Dragon Breath.
As Lian watched Axew close its eyes and lie down, entering a Rest state to heal its injuries, he nearly burst out laughing. Despite all his calculations, he never anticipated that Axew would actually use Rest, feeling utterly delighted inside.
Zach quickly realized his mistake; he acted too hastily. Now, Axew is immobilized, vulnerable to Charmander's next assault.
Kalia seized this perfect opportunity for an attack, commanding, "Charmander, continue using Dragon Breath!"
With Axew just entering sleep and not fully healed, employing Dragon Breath now ensures a definitive victory over Axew.
Zach deeply regretted his decision, wishing he had switched to Staravia earlier. Now, Axew faced almost certain defeat.
Lian took a deep breath, preparing to unleash Dragon Breath once more. However, this time he intentionally aimed for a miss, allowing Axew to fully recover from its injuries.
By doing so, the output reward would be significantly higher, accelerating Lian's goal of accumulating more Combat Points and becoming stronger sooner.
After all, occasional mistakes happen during battles.
The Dragon Breath was released, stirring up a fierce gust of wind that appeared to head towards Axew but subtly veered off course.
Zach helplessly watched the Dragon Breath, already prepared to switch in Staravia, as it seemed Axew couldn't withstand another hit.
The Dragon Breath precisely struck...the grass next to Axew.
"?" A question mark popped above Kalia's head, puzzled by the unexpected miss, especially with Axew immobilized.
Zach was equally stunned, wondering how such a deviation occurred.
Realizing an opportunity for counterattack had arisen, Zach seized the moment created by Charmander's error.
"Return, Axew." Zach hastily recalled the sleeping Axew, fearing that Kalia might command Charmander to attack again immediately.
Lian feigned innocence towards Kalia, knowing he couldn't miss this opportunity. Encountering a Pokemon with the Rest move was rare; failing to capitalize on it might have left him regretting for quite some time.
Kalia managed a helpless smile, unable to be upset seeing Charmander's innocent expression. She suspected that Charmander intentionally missed, as during regular training sessions, Dragon Breath had nearly perfect accuracy, if not always guaranteed.
Shrugging it off as a minor mishap, she realized this battle wasn't particularly crucial anyway, and even losing wouldn't affect her significantly.
"Go, Staravia!"
Since Zach switched his Pokémon after Charmander's attack, it didn't violate any rules. He promptly brought out Staravia.
Emerging from its Poké Ball, Staravia displayed its sharp beak and expansive wings. With each flutter, it created gentle breezes while hovering in mid-air, awaiting commands.
