Chapter 16: Chapter 16: Pichu's Debut!
Merry Christmas One and All, I hope you all enjoy the season's holiday and looking forward to the new year, take a glass of water and toast for we have made it through another year
...
"Look who decided to show up! Isn't that our young and upcoming industry giant, daring to grace the exhibition?" Jerry Fowler sneered, lazily spinning a number card in his fingers. "Not worried about embarrassing yourself, Ethan?"
Ethan Grave met his gaze with a cool, unbothered look, showing his ID to the staff before accepting his number card.
"Worry about your own problems," he replied, expression calm as ever.
Jerry glanced at Ethan's card and let out a low laugh. "Number 068? Figures they shoved you in a corner somewhere. Take a look at our prime placement #012! Ciguli's got the main stage, showing off our Spirit Dog for all to see. Guess your little company doesn't qualify for anything better."
Ethan paused just long enough to catch Jerry's smug expression, then answered in a sharp tone. "You think position matters? Main booth or not, stolen work is still stolen. I don't need to hide behind theft. Can you say the same?"
Jerry's smirk faltered as he shot a nervous glance at the surrounding staff, his voice lowering defensively. "Watch your mouth, Ethan. Our Spirit Dog is one hundred percent Ciguli's creation. Keep your accusations to yourself."
Ethan shook his head with a dry smile. "I'm not here to argue, Jerry. If you're so proud, keep polishing that 'masterpiece' of yours. It's of no concern to me."
"Excuse me?" A new voice cut in, Lina Cobbs, Ciguli's head designer, visibly bristling. "Ethan, just admit you're envious. If you've got something better than our Spirit Dog, show it! Otherwise, stop with the trash talk, I'm sure it's irritating everyone here."
"Soon enough," Ethan replied calmly, then turned to his colleague, James Hunt, with a nod to leave. "We'll let actions do the talking. Once Pichu's on display, the people will see for themselves."
Their exit was punctuated by muttered insults behind them.
"What a fool…"
"Shameless…"
James barely glanced back, muttering, "Two pathetic people so deep in their delusions."
Ethan chuckled softly. "They wouldn't be this way if they weren't shameless. I learned the hard way that trusting Jerry was a mistake, but hey, learning someone's true nature is worth losing a hundred million dollars just so you could make a billion times as much."
"That's not exactly cheap," James shot him a skeptical look.
Ethan shrugged as they made their way to their booth, a modest setup compared to Ciguli's showy exhibit. As they arranged their props and set up their company sign, nearby exhibitors cast glances their way, some curious, others openly dismissive.
The online chatter quickly took on a mocking tone. Jerry, ever the instigator, had already posted on Weibo:
"Big thanks to the organizers for giving Ciguli a prime spot alongside the industry's best! Booth #012, come see our Spirit Dog! Oh, and guess what I stumbled across? Booth 068, who'd have thought they'd show up? Haha!"
His post featured several photos: two shots of Ciguli's grand setup, followed by a few more of Ethan's humble booth from unflattering angles, making it look like a neglected corner of the exhibition.
The comments were quick to follow.
"A scam company, even getting a booth is a privilege for them."
"Organizers probably knew they'd flop, so they stuck them in a corner, it's funny when you actually think about it."
"There's no contest here. Ciguli for the win!"
Ethan scrolled through the comments, his lips twitching with a hint of amusement before he closed Weibo. "Stumbled across us?" he murmured. "More like you made it a point to stop by."
He mentally thanked Jerry for the free publicity. If anything, the attention would only bring more people to see what Pokémon Biotechnology had to offer.
With their booth set up, Ethan and his team waited as the exhibition drew closer to opening. Employees whispered in small groups, some casting anxious glances at the crowd gathering outside, while others exchanged hopeful smiles.
9:30 AM arrived, and the doors swung open. The New Century Pet Exhibition filled quickly, a constant hum of voices buzzing through the air.
Ethan's neighboring booths were occupied by smaller companies with genetic creatures that were cute, common, and mostly designed to appeal to fans of adorable pets. People would stop occasionally, cooing over a creature, before moving on.
"Time to release the Pichus," Ethan instructed with a playful glint in his eye. "Looks like we've got an audience already, let's not disappoint them."
The employees chuckled, catching on to Ethan's intent. Jerry and Lina expected a show, and they'd certainly get one, it's just not the one they were hoping for.
"Start by removing the black cloth. Let the little Pichus get accustomed to the crowd, then we'll give them a few minutes to come out."
Following Ethan's directions, his team carefully lifted the black cloth, revealing the enclosure. A ripple of curiosity passed through the nearby visitors, gradually drawing more attention toward Booth 068.
Inside the enclosure, tiny, golden-furred creatures with big, round eyes and pink electric pouches on their cheeks blinked at their surroundings, twitching their ears as they took in the bustling scene. The crowd edged closer, enchanted by the Pichus' irresistible charm.
For the first time, a hushed silence fell around Booth 068 as people paused, mesmerized by the sight of these previously unseen, delightful creatures. Ciguli's Spirit Dog might have stolen the spotlight briefly, but there was no denying it:
Pichu had arrived, and it was about to steal the whole show.
