Chapter 12: The end of the battle

While they were talking, Arcanine was preparing for another attack. But as the leader remarked, he shouted, "Everyone, focus! This is our chance. While it's still confused, Forget the defense and just focus on the attack!"

Kay turned to the team leader, worry clear in his voice. "If we forget defense even once… one attack from Arcanine could end this battle!"

The leader smirked faintly. "That's where my ability comes in, if a Pokemon gets confused by my Pokemon, they start seeing multiple targets, like their opponent used Double Team."

Kay nodded, what the leader said made sense, but still, there was always a chance that Arcanine could hit them, even by pure luck.

Kay quickly pushed that terrifying thought out of his mind. He couldn't afford to let fear cloud his focus now.

As the battle continued, Kay noticed something. The Arcanine had started relying heavily on Wild Charge and Thunder Fang, it was clear that it was trying to finish the battle quickly.

Sometimes Arcanine hits the volcanic stones with Wild Charge which damages him even more.

The team leader and the remaining trainer focused only on commanding their Pokemon to press harder, attacking with everything they had left. But Kay's sharp eyes caught a crucial detail.

"Wait…" he muttered.

"It's not confused anymore!" Kay shouted in panic.

But Arcanine didn't wait for anyone to react. Electricity surged around its body as it charged forward with another Wild Charge.

"Eevee, use Dig!" Kay yelled, his voice cracking from the pressure.

Eevee positioned slightly farther from the battle, managed to burrow underground just moments before the Arcanine reached his position.

The devastating attack collided directly with Poliwhirl and Golduck; the aftermath was horrifying.

Poliwhirl was killed instantly, its body falling lifeless to the ground. Golduck managed to survive the hit, but just barely, it fainted directly from the hit.

But Arcanine wasn't done. With electric energy still crackling around its fangs, it lunged at Golduck for a Thunder Fang.

"NO!" Kay screamed, but he couldn't react from fear.

In an instant, the team leader jumped forward, putting himself between Golduck and the Arcanine.

The team leader managed to block the Thunder Fang attack with his shield but Arcanine didn't stop there but hit him with another Flamethrower.

The force of the hit sent him flying backward into a volcanic rock with a huge crash.

The Arcanine, still not satisfied, sank a Thunder Fang another time into Golduck's neck, ending its life instantly.

The moment Golduck died the leader's shield broke and fell to the ground, leaving him without any protection.

Kay froze. His mind went blank as he witnessed the brutal scene unfold in front of him.

The team leader lay dead against the volcanic stone. His shield was broken, and his body was still.

But before the leader passed out completely, he turned his head slightly and met Kay's gaze.

His eyes burned with anger, disappointment, and… something else; a reprimand that would haunt Kay for the rest of his life.

Kay understood from these looks that he blamed him for not interfering and just standing aside watching him die.

The battlefield was silent except for the distant rumble of lava beneath the volcano.

Kay was the only one left standing. Eevee was still underground, and the Arcanine damaged, weakened turned its gaze toward Kay.

Arcanine's mouth began to glow as flames gathered within its throat. 'A Flamethrower…' Kay thought.

The Arcanine inhaled deeply, preparing to unleash a torrent of fire. Kay's mind raced, and in a split second, he made a desperate choice.

"Eevee! NOW! Use Dig! Aim for its jaw!"

From beneath the cracked volcanic ground, Eevee shot upward like a missile. Its sharp claws dug into Arcanine's jaw with perfect precision.

The sudden impact forced the Arcanine's head upward, and the Flamethrower was launched skyward instead of at Kay.

The redirected attack slammed into a nearby rocky mountain, causing it to explode in a fiery blaze.

Rocks and embers rained down, and smoke filled the air.

The massive explosion caused by Arcanine's Flamethrower hitting the mountain had thrown dust and ash into the air, creating a thick cloud that blinded both Kay and Arcanine.

Kay coughed, waving his hand in front of his face as he struggled to see through the dust. "Eevee, stay close to me!" he ordered. Eevee trotted to his side, its fur bristling as it remained on high alert.

For a few tense moments, neither of them moved. Kay squinted into the cloud, trying to detect any sign of Arcanine.

But then, a loud crash echoed through the air like something massive had fallen from above.

Right after the crash, a sharp and painful cry followed. It was Arcanine.

Kay froze. 'What just happened?'.

Slowly, the dust began to settle. Shafts of sunlight pierced through the thinning cloud, revealing the explosion's aftermath.

A massive boulder had fallen at the base of the mountain, breaking off from the rocky wall during the blast. Underneath that enormous stone, something was still moving, twitching weakly.

Kay cautiously approached, with Eevee walking beside him. As they got closer, Kay's eyes widened in shock.

It was Arcanine.

The powerful Pokemon was pinned under the massive boulder. Its muscular legs were trembling as it tried desperately to free itself.

But Arcanine was too exhausted. The long, intense battle, the cumulated damage from the team's attacks, and the recoil damage from the repeated use of Wild Charge had drained its strength.

Kay hesitated for a moment, watching the struggling creature. Despite its fearsome power and terrifying presence during the battle, it now looked… vulnerable.

But then Kay noticed something strange. Even though Arcanine was trapped, it wasn't paying attention to Kay or Eevee. Its head was turning slightly, and its eyes were locked on something in the distance.

Kay followed Arcanine's gaze and looked in the same direction.

All he could see was the volcano's peak, smoke rising into the sky, and rivers of glowing lava trickling down its sides. Nothing else seemed out of the ordinary.

'What are you looking at…?' Kay thought.

Before he could think further, Arcanine's head slowly lowered to the ground. Its body stopped moving, and its eyes closed.

A few seconds later, Arcanine's massive body disintegrated into black ash.

After Arcanine was gone, a Power Stone appeared in its place.

It wasn't like any Power Stone Kay had seen before. It was massive and glowed with a fierce orange and red hue. It was as if molten lava was trapped inside, swirling and flickering with life.

Kay carefully crouched down and picked up the Power Stone. Its warmth pulsed gently in his hands. Without wasting time, he placed it inside his bag, making sure it was secure.

But just as he zipped up his bag, something strange happened.

A thread of light, glowing with the same fiery orange and red hues as the Power Stone, appeared in front of him.

Kay froze. He was confused as he stared at the glowing thread. "What… is this?".

Kay couldn't see an end to the thread, all he could see was that it directed to the peak of the volcano.

This had never happened in any dungeon he had been to before. Usually, after defeating a dungeon leader, a gate would open, and trainers would leave. But this was completely new.

Kay thought back to all the books he had read and all the stories he had heard from other trainers.

No one had ever mentioned something like this happening, not even in D-rank dungeons or above.

His mind raced with possibilities. 'Is this because of the Power Stone? Or… is this something unique to this dungeon?'

He hesitated, looking back at the glowing gate that had appeared after Arcanine died. It was his way out. His way back to safety.

But then Kay remarked something helped him make his decision.
