"Your performance was not only excellent but truly astonishing. You deserve this Cascade Badge."
Handing the Cascade Badge to Tyson, Daisy spoke sincerely.
After all, Charizard's top-level proficiency in Flamethrower alone warranted such high praise.
"You're exaggerating. I'm no different from other trainers; it's just that my Pokémon work harder," Tyson replied humbly to Daisy's compliment.
With his sharp features and remarkable performance in the battle, Daisy didn't mind chatting with Tyson a bit longer.
Whether it was Tyson's exceptional training methods or Charizard's extraordinary talent, Tyson's skills stood out. Even setting aside Flamethrower's mastery, his performance could only be described as genius-level.
As a Gym Leader, Daisy naturally wanted to befriend such a promising trainer. She also had a more practical reason—spending some time with Tyson meant her sisters would have to take over her responsibilities for a while.
Finally, after exchanging contact information, Tyson left the Cerulean Gym under Daisy's reluctant gaze.
Initially, Tyson might have misunderstood Daisy's interest, but their conversation revealed her true intent: to take a well-deserved break while leaving her duties to her siblings.
"Let's go, Mankey. I promised to find you a suitable opponent, and I intend to keep that promise," Tyson said, smiling at his eager Pokémon.
Mankey's excitement was palpable as his eyes sparkled with anticipation.
Watching Mankey's enthusiasm, Eevee couldn't quite understand the appeal of battles or why they fascinated others so much. Shaking her head, she decided not to dwell on it, instead curling up comfortably in Tyson's arms, content to rest for the afternoon.
After returning to the Pokémon Center, Tyson healed his team and headed to the battle arena.
As an official Pokémon League facility, the Pokémon Center had all the necessary amenities: accommodation, healing services, Pokémon transfers, deliveries, and even battle arenas.
The arena was particularly popular among trainers staying at the Center, as it allowed them to find worthy opponents and receive immediate treatment for their Pokémon after battles.
It wasn't long before Tyson found a potential opponent in the Crowd.
"Hi, I'm Tyson. Would you mind having your Squirtle battle my Mankey?"
The trainer, Tatsuya, turned at the sound of Tyson's voice. He noticed Tyson holding Eevee and Mankey, both of whom looked ready for action.
Although Eevee rested calmly in Tyson's arms, her strength was evident to Tatsuya, a seasoned trainer. Observing Mankey's eager demeanor, Tatsuya realized Tyson was training a newer Pokémon, just as he was.
"Sure, no problem. I think my Squirtle would enjoy the match," Tatsuya replied with a grin.
"Squirtle, Squirtle!"
Squirtle chimed in enthusiastically, ready for the challenge.
As the two Pokémon sized each other up, Mankey hopped down from Tyson's arms, meeting Squirtle's gaze.
"Squirtle, Squirtle!" "Hello! Nice to meet you. Let's have a great battle."
"Mankey, Mankey!" "It's my first battle! I'll do my best. Please go easy on me."
"Squirtle, Squirtle!" "Don't worry! I haven't battled much either. Let's do this!"
With their introductions complete, Tyson and Tatsuya found a spot to battle. The two Pokémon took their positions, ready to begin.
"Squirtle, use Water Gun!"
Tatsuya had won the coin toss and started the match with an attack.
Squirtle puffed up his cheeks and unleashed a steady stream of water at Mankey.
"Remember your training! Dodge the Water Gun and close the distance!" Tyson called out.
Mankey's nerves were evident—it was his first real battle, after all. But Tyson's calm and encouraging voice steadied him.
Recalling his training, Mankey nimbly leaped to the side, avoiding the Water Gun. With a burst of speed, he dashed toward Squirtle.
As a Fighting-type Pokémon, Mankey's physical abilities were impressive, allowing him to close the gap faster than Squirtle anticipated.
"Squirtle, spin and use Water Gun to keep Mankey at bay!"
"Now, Mankey, use Covet!"
Mankey quickly adapted to the battle. At Tyson's command, he used Covet, a move Eevee had personally helped him practice.
While Covet didn't directly interrupt the opponent's moves, its unexpected cuteness caught Squirtle off guard. Squirtle hesitated for a moment, and Mankey seized the opportunity to deliver a punch right to Squirtle's face.
Knowing Squirtle's shell offered excellent protection, Tyson had trained Mankey to target the head when fighting such opponents—and it worked perfectly.
"Squirtle, withdraw into your shell!"
"Mankey, use Leer!"
Tatsuya's command was swift, but Tyson reacted even faster.
Mankey's intimidating Leer caused Squirtle to flinch, interrupting its attempt to retreat into its shell and lowering its defense.
"Now, Mankey, use Fury Swipes and finish with another Covet!"
Mankey unleashed a flurry of swipes, leaving several marks on Squirtle's face. Though Mankey only managed two successful swipes due to his inexperience, it was enough to leave Squirtle dazed.
Finally, Mankey executed another Covet, landing a playful yet decisive blow that sent Squirtle staggering backward.
With a groan, Squirtle collapsed to the ground, unable to continue.
Mankey stood frozen for a moment, processing what had just happened. Then, his face lit up with joy, and he leaped into Tyson's arms, sharing his excitement.
"Well done, Mankey! I didn't expect you to perform so well in your first battle. You're going to become even stronger—I'm sure of it," Tyson said, stroking Mankey's head.
Beaming with pride, Mankey nestled closer to Tyson, savoring the praise.
Thus, Mankey's first battle ended in a resounding victory, marking the start of a promising journey.
