Pokémon cannot be conquered simply by claiming victory over them.
If you don't genuinely defeat and bond with the Pokémon, dissatisfaction may linger, leading to disobedience—or even aggression toward the trainer.
This was precisely the issue with the Scyther that Isla and the others had captured.
The Scyther was clearly unhappy with Isla and Daniel.
So, as soon as it regained consciousness, it demanded a battle with all three of them.
This left Isla and her friends feeling nervous.
Though their grades at school had always been stellar, their current Pokémon were newly captured.
How could they handle this challenge?
Their inexperience left them at a loss.
Evan decided to step in.
"Gallade, come out and fight them again," he commanded. "If they're not convinced, then we'll keep battling until they are."
Evan had anticipated this situation. Scyther, a proud warrior, wouldn't submit so easily.
The best way to earn its respect was through sheer strength.
At Evan's words, Gallade stepped forward confidently.
But this time, Scyther hesitated.
"Scy!" it cried nervously.
While proud, Scyther wasn't foolish. It remembered all too well how effortlessly Gallade had defeated it earlier.
Another battle? Absurd—it might end up unconscious again.
The trio of Scythers exchanged uneasy glances.
Evan smirked at their hesitation. "Cowards," he muttered.
Then, addressing them directly, he said, "From now on, you'll follow these three trainers. They might be rookies, but they're my assistants. Following them is the same as following me. Understand?"
He gestured to the energy cubes in his hand. "See these? Stick with us, and you can have these every day. I don't know what led to your fight earlier, but I bet it was about food, right?"
The Scythers looked at one another again.
Evan's guess had hit the mark. Their earlier battle with Lurantis had indeed been over energy cubes. His words gave them pause.
Arrogance was one thing, but logic couldn't be ignored.
"Ye~!"
"Scy Scy!"
"Scy ye!"
After a brief huddle, the three Scythers reluctantly agreed. Resistance would only lead to another beating—and possibly no food.
When Isla and her friends saw this, they cheered.
"Great! Scyther, let's work well together!" Isla said, gripping Scyther's scythe and waving it playfully.
Despite its initial resistance, the Scyther seemed to warm to its new trainer. Isla and the others were thrilled.
Evan observed the scene with satisfaction, then released his other Pokémon. He explained the situation to them, encouraging their cooperation.
Most of the Pokémon readily agreed. After all, who would prefer life in the wild—exposed to the elements—when they could have food and security?
Some Pokémon even asked Evan if they could bring their companions along. Evan, of course, didn't object.
Mime Jr., in particular, clung to Evan and made its case. Though it had already been captured by Daniel, it wanted a sibling and pleaded with Evan to make it happen.
"mimi! mimi!" it cried, tugging at Evan's arm.
Evan smiled. "Alright, then. Go ahead and call them over."
"It's okay to have a few more," Evan said with a chuckle.
Hearing this, some of the Pokémon with companions lit up with joy and dashed off across the grasslands to gather their friends.
Watching this, Isla was left speechless. "Evan, is this really okay? Capturing so many Pokémon at once?"
Her concern was practical—raising so many Pokémon would be expensive. "The costs for food and care alone could be overwhelming. Hiring someone might be cheaper!"
Evan shook his head, his tone relaxed. "It's no big deal. The more Pokémon, the more fun. Plus," he added, "if their offspring show promise, they could be raised as starter Pokémon in breeding houses and adopted by new trainers."
He then turned his attention back to the matter at hand. "For now, let's wait a bit. First, I want to figure out what's going on with this little one."
With that, Evan retrieved the Poké Ball containing the shiny Lurantis. Isla and the others perked up at the sight.
A shiny Pokémon—Lurantis, no less.
In China, Lurantis was an extremely rare sight. Typically, trainers would have to travel abroad to find one. To encounter one here, especially a shiny, was nothing short of miraculous.
The curiosity was palpable as Evan released Lurantis from its Poké Ball.
The Pokémon emerged, blinking up at Evan with wide, gem-like blue eyes. Shyly, it raised its scythe-like arms to cover its face, radiating an endearing awkwardness.
Evan couldn't help but smile at the sight. "Hello, Lurantis," he said warmly. "From now on, I'll be your Trainer. Let's take good care of each other."
"Lala!" Lurantis hesitated, then nodded.
Evan extended his hand. "Shake hands?"
After a moment of thought, Lurantis gently placed its scythe in Evan's palm. His grin widened. This was clearly a gentle and agreeable Pokémon.
"I'm Evan, your Trainer starting today," he said. "Please give me your guidance."
The Lurantis tilted its head curiously, its sparkling eyes fixed on Evan. After the handshake, he decided to ask the question that had been puzzling him.
"Lurantis, why are you here? From what I know, there's no tribe of your kind in China. What's your story?"
Lurantis blinked, appearing to process the question, then shook its head.
"Lala~~! La la la," it chirped softly, explaining in its own way.
With some help from the surrounding Pokémon, Evan pieced together the mystery. Lurantis had hatched from an egg and had no memory of its kind. It had been raised among the local Grass-type Pokémon, living a quiet life away from humans. Being nocturnal, it ventured out at night in search of food and avoided human encounters.
As for its recent scuffle with the Scythers, it turned out to be over food—delicious bait set as a trap. Lurantis had tried to avoid conflict but ended up drawn into the fight, unable to escape the confrontation with the aggressive Scythers.
Evan considered this carefully. "So, you hatched alone, grew up among Grass-types, and have lived in this area ever since. You've been hidden because your Pokémon friends kept you safe."
He smiled. "And now, here we are. Looks like I stumbled into a jackpot."
Evan glanced at his team, feeling a surge of pride. Pikachu, Charmander, Pidgeot, Gallade, Gardevoir, and now Lurantis—his team was shaping up wonderfully. Three of them were shiny Pokémon, and even Charmander's rare golden eyes added a special charm to his team.
Releasing Gardevoir and Pidgeot, Evan introduced them to Lurantis. The Pokémon exchanged greetings, and Gardevoir, in particular, seemed captivated by Lurantis's elegant appearance.
The atmosphere among the Pokémon was lively, with everyone welcoming their new companion warmly. Evan's luck truly seemed unstoppable, and he couldn't wait to see what adventures lay ahead with his ever-growing family of Pokémon.
As Evan happily approached the newly released Pokémon, his cheerful demeanor made it seem as though they were lifelong friends. Anyone watching might have assumed he had spent years bonding with his team. Thankfully, the forest was deserted—otherwise, the sight of Evan's team would have left onlookers in utter disbelief.
A team of shiny Pokémon? It was the stuff of dreams for countless trainers.
While Evan, Isla, and the others were admiring their Pokémon playing together, the Pokémon that had gone off earlier began returning, bringing wild Pokémon with them. Among the new arrivals were a few Bounsweets, a Mr. Mime, and a Machamp.
Evan's eyes lit up at the sight of the Bounsweets. "Bounsweets, huh?" he muttered, recognizing the resemblance to a fruit.
Bounsweet was a rare Pokémon, known to be introduced to the China decades ago as part of an initiative to diversify Pokémon species. Its appealing fragrance and the ability to produce sweat used for energy cubes made it a valuable Pokémon.
Evan realized he didn't even need to battle them. With the help of a few energy cubes—and likely the influence of their friends—the Bounsweets eagerly joined his team, their innocent, childlike naivety making it almost too easy.
Beyond the Bounsweets, the Machamp and Mr. Mime also piqued Evan's interest. Both were high-level Pokémon, and their potential was undeniable.
Machamp, with its incredible strength and utility, was quick to agree to Evan's offer of food, shelter, and steady work. As a Pokémon with a voracious appetite, surviving in the wild was tough, especially with its growing energy demands. Machamp seemed relieved to find a trainer who promised to keep it well-fed.
Mr. Mime, on the other hand, appeared to have a backstory of its own. After a brief explanation about its loneliness—something about its sister leaving with another trainer—it seemed eager to accept Evan's invitation.
Between the food, companionship, and aura of trust exuded by Gallade and Gardevoir, both Pokémon entered Evan's Poké Balls without hesitation.
Evan's haul for the day was nothing short of extraordinary. With his team now bolstered, he decided it was time to head back with Isla and the others.
"If we delay any longer, we'll miss the ride back," he said, slinging his bag over his shoulder. After tidying up some trash in the area, he added, "Let's head out. We've got plenty of Pokémon now. If we run into any others on the way back, we can think about catching a few more."
Following the usual routine, Pikachu and Charmander took the lead, joined by the three Scythers. Isla's Pokémon were also released to join the procession. The Scythers made quick work of any obstructing branches, clearing a path that sped up their journey.
As Evan and the group followed the newly cleared trail, they chatted excitedly about their new Pokémon. For Isla and her friends, finally having their own partners was thrilling.
Eventually, the Pokémon leading the way vanished from sight, darting ahead too far to keep up. However, the trail of freshly cut branches made it easy for Evan and the others to continue without getting lost.
Just as they were nearing the edge of the forest and the highway, Evan felt a surge of psychic energy in the distance.
The next moment, a booming clap of thunder echoed through the air.
Everyone froze.
"What was that?" Isla asked, her voice tinged with nervous excitement.
Evan furrowed his brow. "A strong psychic wave… and now thunder? Something's happening up ahead."
Without hesitation, he quickened his pace, leading the group toward the source of the disturbance.
After the thunder came a massive burst of fire that lit up the distant horizon.
"What's going on now? Did someone set the forest on fire?" Evan gasped, his thoughts racing.
It was clearly the result of a battle, and as he considered the source, a realization struck him: Pikachu and Charmander. Could it be their doing? That blaze… was it caused by Flamethrower? Did Charmander just learn the move?
Alarmed, Evan quickened his pace. A fire in the forest could spell disaster—and Evan could end up footing the bill for the damage.
"Gallade, go on ahead!" Evan called out. "Make sure those little guys don't burn the whole place down!"
Without hesitation, Gallade nodded and vanished in a flash of Teleport, heading toward the source of the chaos.
Evan sprinted for several minutes before finally reaching the scene. What he saw left him momentarily speechless.
Pikachu and Charmander stood panting, visibly exhausted from battle. Nearby, the three Scythers watched, seemingly unharmed but alert. Scattered across the battlefield were several unconscious Exeggutor and Exeggcute, their bodies bearing clear signs of burns, electric shocks, and slashes.
The area bore evidence of intense combat: scorch marks from fire, charred grass from electricity, and severed branches that littered the ground. Evan pieced the scene together quickly. Pikachu and Charmander had likely been the main fighters, with the Scythers lending their cutting power when needed.
He let out a sigh as he surveyed the fainted Pokémon. "Exeggutor," he muttered, shaking his head. "Too bad these aren't the Alolan forms."
Alolan Exeggutor might have been useful for certain specialized tasks, but the standard form was a different story. Though still a fascinating Pokémon, its peculiar trait—each head having its own face and will—made it a bit too noisy for his liking.
Evan thought about the Pokémon's unique reproductive ability. When one of their heads fell off, it would grow into a new Exeggcute. It was unlike anything other Pokémon could do. Still, his focus shifted to practicality. Was there any real use for them in his current plans?
After a moment of deliberation, he remembered several recipes for grass-type energy cubes in his mental collection. Many of them required materials from Exeggutor—not their heads, thankfully, but the leaves atop their heads, which would grow back over time.
"Looks like they could be useful after all," Evan concluded.
Without hesitation, he tossed Poké Balls at the fainted Exeggutor and Exeggcute, capturing them effortlessly. "Even if I don't need them immediately, they can stay in the breeding house. No harm in keeping them around."
With the battle wrapped up, Evan turned to his tired Pikachu and Charmander. Kneeling down, he gave them a warm smile.
"Thank you both for your hard work," he said gently. "You were amazing out here. Now, let's get you back in your Poké Balls for some well-deserved rest. I'll make something extra delicious for you when we get home."
Pikachu's ears perked up at his words. "Pika pika!" it cried happily.
Charmander wagged its flaming tail with excitement. "Char~~~!"
Evan chuckled as he returned the two Pokémon to their Poké Balls. "Good job, you two."
Straightening up, he glanced around at the now-quiet battlefield. The Scythers stood patiently, awaiting his next move. Evan smiled. His team had grown considerably stronger today—and despite the chaos, the day felt like a resounding success.
