Chapter 36: Chapter 36: Arrival in Saffron City
In the underground level of Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town, the sound of silver bell-like laughter echoed continuously.
With the company of Gastly and Haunter, Caitlin was having a fantastic time.
These two little guys were indeed quite the entertainers.
Gary and Gengar lounged on the sofa, munching on popcorn while watching a comedy show, bursting into laughter at the funniest moments.
Gary's Pokémon joined in the fun, riding on a miniature train and a carousel, often doubled over with laughter at Gastly's silly faces. Even Rhydon discovered a large balance ball and was happily perched atop it.
"Ah~ this is so much fun," Caitlin exclaimed as she flopped down beside Gary on the sofa, feeling utterly satisfied.
"Yeah, these three are quite the clowns, and they love playing with people," Gary said, tugging at Gengar's ear, who responded with goofy expressions.
"I've made up my mind!" Caitlin clapped her hands, wrapping her arms around Gastly and Haunter. "I want to capture them!"
Gary wasn't surprised at all and turned to Gengar. "What do you think? Want to join me on an adventure? There will be all sorts of exciting things to do. If you get tired, I have plenty of Pokémon in my backyard to play with."
Gengar was unusually silent as it contemplated Gary's words.
Meanwhile, Gastly had sneakily stuffed a bomb back into its mouth...
Gary chuckled at the three little ghosts whispering among themselves and interrupted, "Actually, capturing is pretty simple. There are basically two options."
The three little ghosts looked up at Gary.
"First~" Gary held up one finger. "You all think it's fun to be with us. I don't need to say more; Caitlin will inevitably travel to various places for research. Following her means you can roam around the world!"
Whoosh—Gastly's eyes lit up!
Haunter and Gengar exchanged glances but nodded slightly; indeed, Gary and Caitlin were both excellent choices.
"Second~" Gary raised an eyebrow. "Since I've taken a liking to you all and you don't want to be captured easily, then… we'll have to battle until you're willing." He clapped his hands.
Caitlin's Gallade and Alakazam stepped forward, their Elite-level pressure fully unleashed!
They had long been annoyed by these little tricksters teasing their trainer.
Gallade unsheathed its blades, its cold gaze seeming to ask Gastly how it wanted to be sliced up.
Alakazam spun its two spoons menacingly, ready to unleash a psychic shock if things escalated.
Gastly and Haunter broke into a cold sweat, immediately displaying eager-to-please expressions as they extended their long tongues toward Caitlin.
Boom—Caitlin produced two Poké Balls that were inadvertently licked by Gastly and Haunter's tongues.
With a flash of red light, the Poké Balls didn't even shake before locking shut. According to the rules of capturing Pokémon held by trainers,
the mini-teleportation system inside the Poké Balls activated, automatically transferring them to the nearest Pokémon Center before sending them off to Caitlin's castle in Unova.
In the storage room, Old Butler Kokuran was polishing some Poké Balls when the teleportation machine lit up beside him.
As white light descended, two Poké Balls appeared in the old butler's hands.
"Oh dear! The young lady has captured new Pokémon! How wonderful!" he said tearfully as he opened one of the Poké Balls.
Gastly eagerly spat out a bomb with a lit fuse from its mouth.
Boom!! Three dark faces appeared in the storage room. Gastly and Haunter exchanged mischievous glances before bursting into wicked laughter.
The old butler wiped his face and lovingly waved his hand at Gastly and Haunter as they dripped purple poison from their tongues onto the floor, corroding the carpet in small holes. "Oh my! Truly lively Pokémon! Come here; I've prepared some treats for you!"
Gastly and Haunter stared wide-eyed at the luxurious furniture around them; their new master was quite extravagant...
On another note, watching the surrendering duo, Gengar couldn't help but roll its eyes. What traitors!
Gary took out another Poké Ball and smiled at Gengar. "Let's go see the outside world; it's interesting."
After pondering for a moment, Gengar made a funny face at Gary before reaching out to press the button on its Poké Ball.
As the Poké Ball rocked gently before settling down with its warning light extinguishing slowly, Gary nodded with a smile. "I look forward to working with you, Gengar!"
With six Poké Balls already in hand, Gary's Pokédex beeped excitedly.
He thought for a moment before tapping Rhydon's icon; Rhydon was sent back to Professor Oak for a thorough health check-up and perhaps learn some new moves from Kangaskhan.
Having captured the desired Pokémon, Gary and Caitlin didn't linger any longer; they restored everything in Pokémon Tower back to normal before turning to leave.
Perhaps new Ghost-type Pokémon would inhabit this place in the future.
As they exited the boundaries of Lavender Town, the surrounding fog dissipated, revealing the blinding sunlight, making it feel like they had stepped into another world.
After spending so much time in Lavender Town, it was surprising that it was only just noon.
Gary quickly devoured a sandwich he had bought earlier for lunch, and the two continued on their journey toward Saffron City.
Along the way, Eevee and Growlithe took the lead, while Caitlin floated beside Gary, feeling rather bored.
Houndour had been training hard lately, and naturally, Eevee didn't want to be outdone.
To prepare for a challenge against Sabrina, Gary had devised a targeted training plan focused on enhancing Eevee's biting technique. This move was particularly painful for Psychic-type Pokémon!
Throughout their journey, whether it was Geodude or Gloom, any Pokémon that crossed their path inevitably ended up with bite marks.
As they trained and traveled at a leisurely pace throughout the day, they finally reached the outskirts of Saffron City just as night fell.
Before they could approach the entrance to Saffron City, a little girl's laughter suddenly rang in Gary's ears.
"Hee hee hee~ Come play with me~" The girl wore a Lolita-style dress, had long flowing hair, a ghostly pale face, and piercing crimson eyes.
Gary felt his mouth twitch; this was far more terrifying than the ghosts of Lavender Town!
Seeing that Gary remained unfazed, the little girl took a few steps closer.
Suddenly, the air visibly distorted around them.
Two streams of rainbow-colored energy clashed in mid-air.
Caitlin chuckled with interest. "Now this is getting interesting~ But a doll has no right to play with me!"
Boom! Caitlin unleashed a surge of blue energy, creating a shockwave that radiated outward from her.
With a thud, the doll lost its power and fell to the ground before vanishing in a flash of light.
Gary felt a gust of wind rush past him and found himself hanging high up in a tree branch…
At the Saffron Gym, a girl with long black hair observed the doll with interest. It was the first time someone had managed to gain an upper hand over her in psychic abilities.
Though part of it was due to her own carelessness, the feeling of encountering someone similar made Sabrina tremble with excitement.
"I can't wait to meet them~"
Back with Gary, Caitlin clapped her hands proudly and tilted her head back. "All done! Let's head into the city, Gary. Gary?"
Gary sighed helplessly while hanging from the tree. "Could you please let me down first?"
"Oh! I forgot! Sorry!" Caitlin's cheeks flushed slightly as she waved her hand gently. Shinobu was lifted down softly by a wave of psychic energy.
"Such convenience~" Gary remarked enviously as he finally got back on solid ground…
With Sabrina's doll no longer blocking their path, they successfully entered Saffron City.
However, as they stepped into the city, Caitlin pouted and waved her hand dismissively. A circle of blue psychic energy enveloped both her and Shinobu.
"What's this?" Gary asked in confusion.
"The entire city is covered by that woman's psychic power. I'm not fond of being watched," Caitlin shrugged.
"Alright then, let's find a hotel to rest for today. We can visit the gym tomorrow," Gary suggested. They checked into the most luxurious hotel in Saffron City.
This time, Gary booked two deluxe suites. However, after washing up and seeing Caitlin sitting on his bed clutching a pillow,
she raised her game console and said, "How about we play a round?"
Gary gritted his teeth. "Fine!"
As they sprawled side by side on the bed playing some shooting game together, Golduck looked up at the moon with a melancholic sigh. "Guba~ Goba~ (Love has always left behind empty regrets; this regret lingers endlessly...)"
