Chapter 17: Chapter:17
"Why is Team Rocket here? I don't remember them showing up in the Viridian Forest in my previous life," Satoshi muttered under his breath, his eyes narrowing as he observed the two uniformed figures.
Team Rocket—Kanto's infamous underground organization—was a name that sent shivers down the spines of trainers. Whether in his past life or this game's current world, their notoriety was unmatched.
Their leader, Giovanni, was a name synonymous with power—a peak champion-level trainer whose strength alone made Team Rocket the most feared evil organization in the Pokémon world.
"Encountering them so early? This isn't a good sign," Satoshi thought, his mind racing.
While he knew large-scale missions against Team Rocket would appear in the future, now was not the time. Those missions were designed for groups of players, with rewards so enticing that even novice trainers were tempted to join.
But here, in this deep forest, he was alone.
Judging by the footprints he'd seen earlier, there were at least twenty of them. No matter how strong his Pokémon were compared to others, he knew better than to underestimate his foes.
"Every Rocket member has to be a junior trainer at the very least," Satoshi reasoned. "Even if their captain is just intermediate-level, I'd be completely outnumbered."
"Forget it. There's no mission here anyway," Satoshi decided. "No point risking everything for no reward."
His hand instinctively tightened on Charmeleon's Poké Ball as he prepared to slip away unnoticed.
In Pokémon Generations, the penalty for player death wasn't severe—usually just the loss of a few items or Pokémon fleeing to safety. However, death at the hands of an evil organization like Team Rocket had graver consequences.
Pokémon could be captured or killed, mirroring the harsh realities of this game's world.
"Not worth it," Satoshi muttered. "Let's just avoid this mess."
"Hey, we've been searching for days and haven't found anything. Are you sure it's here?" one Rocket grunt complained, their voice carrying through the forest.
"It's not up to us to decide. Orders are orders. Just keep looking," the other replied irritably.
"Even if we find it, what then? We're just a search team—junior trainers, at best. The captain barely qualifies as intermediate level. If it's really that Pokémon, what can we even do?"
"Idiot. The captain doesn't expect us to fight it. We're just here to track its energy signature. Once that's done, it's out of our hands. The higher-ups will take care of the rest."
Satoshi froze. Every word was crystal clear.
The grunts' voices faded as they moved away, unaware that their conversation had been overheard.
"So they're after it," Satoshi whispered, stepping out from behind the tree.
He'd been ready to leave, but their words weighed heavily on his mind.
"If I heard correctly, they're looking for a legendary Pokémon."
His heart raced. The implications were staggering.
"Kanto's legendary Pokémon… the three legendary birds and the Psychic beasts," he muttered. "The birds wouldn't be in Viridian Forest, and Mewtwo hasn't been created yet. That only leaves one possibility."
His breath caught.
"The ancestor of all Pokémon… Mew."
Satoshi's face hardened as he pieced it together.
"Mewtwo was created from Mew's genes, so this must be the early stages of that plan. Team Rocket's already searching for Mew."
Meeting a legendary Pokémon like Mew was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, especially for someone like Satoshi, who carried the buff that increased legendary favorability.
"But is it worth it?"
He clenched his fists.
"Do I really want to go against Team Rocket this early? Even if they're just a search team, I'd have to defeat all of them. If even one escapes, I'll have a target on my back for life."
He weighed the risks. If caught, Team Rocket wouldn't hesitate to retaliate. His current strength couldn't compete with the organization's full might.
But walking away meant missing a chance to see Mew—a Pokémon whose mere presence could change the course of any trainer's journey.
As Satoshi wrestled with his decision, a sudden notification appeared.
> Ding!
You've discovered Team Rocket's actions and uncovered their purpose. A hidden long-term mission has been triggered.
Satoshi's eyes widened.
"A hidden mission?"
The notification wasn't just unexpected—it was a game-changer.
He clenched Charmeleon's Poké Ball and glanced at Froakie, who looked at him with determined eyes.
"Guess I don't have a choice anymore," he said, a grin slowly forming on his face.
