Chapter 2: 1.1: First World
Yu Zihan woke up with a pounding headache which lasted for a moment before stopping.
"Well, can this transfer be simple and normal?" He groaned, pressing his hand to his forehead.
When he finally sat up, he looked at the unfamiliar room he was in. It was modest with a black and white theme but the decorations screamed otherwise—a huge floor to ceiling window, some expensive looking vases and paintings, and the soft and big bedding he was on.
His observation was cut short when he heard buzzing in his head.
[Hello again host! How did you find the transfer?] And then the system, that he decided to call 49 for now, appeared before jumping up and down. [Oh! And this is your first world, The CEO's Runaway Wife !]
Zihan's lips twitched.
"The what now?" He sighed in defeat, dragging a hand down his face. "Sounds exactly like something I would've binge-read when I was younger and bored."
49 seemed completely unbothered by his tone, going in a small circle. [Well, as you can probably guess, this story is about a cold CEO—super rich, super handsome, has a high IQ but extremely low EQ—who falls for a woman 'not like the other ones'. You know, the classic things!]
Zihan gave the system an exasperated look, reaching out to poke its squishy surface. "Let me guess. He's the overbearing type, and she gets fed up with his nonsense and runs away, leaving him to chase after her for half the book?"
[Exactly!] 49 bounced happily. [There are at least a hundred chapters of him chasing, her running, rinse and repeat, before they finally get together.]
Zihan snorted, shaking his head. "I don't know whether to be impressed or embarrassed that I already know how this stuff works."
[But here's the twist!] 49 said, its tone growing serious as it stopped jumping around. [This story's plot went way off the track. After the hundred chapters of back-and-forth, the CEO finally caught up to his wife. They were scuffling in the street—nothing major, just the usual thing—when out of nowhere, a speeding sports car hit them. She unfortunately died on the spot, and he ended up in a vegetative state.]
Zihan froze, blinking in disbelief. "Wait, what? The Male Lead ends up brain-dead, and the Female Lead dies?"
[Yep! It seems like in that moment the plot armor somehow weakened and well...] 49 buzzed. [Anyways! With the Male Lead out of the picture his company, the Liwei Group, crumbled under internal and external problems. No CEO, no company and no happy ending.]
Zihan let out a low whistle, leaning back on the bed. "So, my job is to clean up this train wreck?"
[That's right!] 49 said cheerfully. [You need to stabilize the company and maybe put the story back on track. Easy enough for a first mission, right?]
Zihan arched an eyebrow. "Fix a romance story gone off the rails by babysitting a CEO? Sounds more tedious than challenging."
[Well, you can't OOC either!] 49 reminded him with a playful bounce. [Not like you literally can't but it will be weird for a cold person to suddenly became cheerful, right? So it's for your own good!]
"Unless I want people to think that I have split personalities." Zihan shrugged, standing up and heading toward the bathroom. "By the way, who am I?"
[Oh, right!] 49 spun in the air. [You're Li Jinshen, the vice president of the Liwei Group. Also, you're Jianyu's uncle—but only by title. The Li family had you late, so you're actually just five years older than him.]
Zihan paused, staring at his reflection in the mirror. His new body looked strikingly similar to his original one, only older, with sharper features and a composed air. He smirked, brushing a hand through his hair. "Not bad. He's practically me in ten years."
"And... What are you waiting for to send me his memories?"
[Oh, right! I almost forgot. Hold still host, this might feel a little weird.]
Before Zihan could respond, a sharp jolt shot through his head. He staggered slightly, gripping the sink for balance. It wasn't painful exactly, but it wasn't pleasant either. It was like someone was pouring molten memories into his brain, each one hot and vivid, like they were happening in real time.
---
Li Jinshen was born into the prestigious Li family when his parents were already in their fifties. They adored him, but they were too old to keep up with a young child, and his older brother was always busy running the family company and managing his own family. So, Jinshen learned to handle things on his own pretty quickly.
When the protagonist's, Li Jianyu, parents died in a car accident, leaving him orphaned at ten, he came to live with Jinshen and his grandparents. The accident had been sudden and strange, accidental or not, the truth was buried with the couple.
Li Jinshen, just five years older, became more like an older brother than an uncle. The two spent their childhood playing together, though their personalities couldn't be more different—Jinshen was calm and collected, while Jianyu was ambitious and headstrong. They got along well enough, especially since Jinshen had no interest in taking over the company. Jianyu didn't see him as competition, so there was no reason to be on guard around him.
As adults, they ended up working side by side at Liwei Group, the family business. Jianyu became the CEO, and Jinshen took the role of vice president. Jinshen's sharp instincts and his ability to read people made him an invaluable person, but their relationship wasn't now as good as it used to be. Jianyu admired Jinshen's skills but hated being told what to do, while Jinshen thought Jianyu was brilliant but dangerously impulsive.
That impulsiveness hit its peak when Jianyu became obsessed with a woman named Qiao Meiyun. He was so infatuated that he started neglecting his duties, even leaving the company during critical moments to chase after her. Of course, Li Jinshen, and the shareholders were not happy.
Li Jinshen thought Qiao Meiyun was a distraction, a soft and naive woman who was completely unfit to be in Jianyu's world.
He tried to talk some sense into Li Jianyu, warning that the company couldn't afford his absence, but he brushed it off, like nothing was wrong. But things were far from under control. Jianyu's repeated absences left the company vulnerable, and their competitors took full advantage of it.
Spies infiltrated Liwei Group, creating problems from the inside with sabotage and leaks. Externally, rival companies launched aggressive attacks, undercutting their deals and stealing clients. By the time all of it came to light, the damage was already done.
Then came Jianyu's car accident.
It was sudden and devastating, leaving him in a vegetative state. With the CEO out of commission and the company already on its last legs, there was no saving it. Scandals erupted, including hidden tax evasion and embezzlement schemes that had been quietly running under Jianyu's nose. Before Jinshen or the executives could stabilize anything, Liwei Group collapsed completely.
Grandpa Li and Grandma Li, already heartbroken over Li Jianyu's vegetative state, were devastated when the company they had poured their sweat and tears into went bankrupt. The blow was too much for them to bear.
The patriarch of the Li family, Li Zhiyuan, suffered a stroke shortly after the company's collapse. Though he clung to life in the hospital, the family's misfortunes didn't stop. Li Jianyu's grandmother, Li Yueqing, passed away from a heart attack just days later because of too much stimulations.
Her death was the final straw for Grandpa Li. Already weakened, he succumbed to his grief on his hospital bed, dying within hours of hearing the news.
Li Jinshen was left to deal with the aftermath. With his nephew in a vegetative state, his grandparents gone, and the company destroyed, there was nothing left to hold onto. Eventually, he gave up trying to fix things and walked away from the business world.
---
After getting all the memories, Yu Zihan—now Li Jinshen—was silent for a moment. Then he let out a slow breath, his face calm but his twitching eyebrows betrayed his annoyance.
"So… he ruined the company, destroyed his family, and practically wrecked his life. For what? Going after some woman who didn't even like him back?"
[Well, he wasn't supposed to die in the original timeline, but yeah, pretty much.] 49 said, sounding a little perplexed. [Anyway! The story's fine as long as the company is still standing!]
Jinshen raised an eyebrow. "Now that I think about it, shouldn't it be about keeping the protagonist alive? They're supposed to be the center of the world, right?"
[Not exactly!] 49 said brightly. [Sometimes the protagonist isn't all that important. If the world decides someone else is better suited to keeping it stable, the focus can shift to them. The 'protagonist' can even be replaced if they mess things up too badly.]
Jinshen nodded slowly, his expression too calm. "So I can make adjustments if I need to."
[Exactly! And you're way ahead in time here, all that drama hasn't even happened yet. You've got six months before your nephew meets the Female Lead.]
"Good." Jinshen's voice was even as he grabbed his suit jacket and put it on. "That should be enough time to straighten him out and knock some sense into him before he makes a mess of everything."
Checking the clock—7 a.m., Monday—he reached for his car keys. He grabbed his car keys and headed to the door. As he moved through the apartment, his eyes swept over the space.
The apartment was mostly black and white with hints of grey. It was simple yet luxurious, with everything one could need—a private gym, pools, a small cinema room. It had plenty of space, but it didn't feel excessive. Jinshen had chosen the apartment because it was practical, unlike a villa, which would have felt too large, too emptyand way too much work for one person to manage.
Slipping on his shoes, he opened the door and stepped into the quiet hallway, heading for the elevator. He needed to get to the underground garage and drive to the company.
The elevator ride was empty and calm at first, with no sign of 49—thankfully, the system had said it will only appear when he needed him which Jinshen found acceptable. But then it stopped at the fifth floor.
The doors slid open, and a man stepped inside. He was strikingly handsome, with sharp features and deep brown eyes with long lashes. His black hair was neatly styled, and his tailored suit fit perfectly highlighting his tall body.
Jinshen glanced at him briefly, his gaze calm and unreadable, before looking away. His thoughts were already occupied with work—contracts that needed reviewing, financial figures to calculate, and the upcoming shareholder meeting.
The man studied Jinshen for a moment, his lips curving into a faint smirk. As the elevator descended, he began humming softly, the quiet tune filling the otherwise silent space.
Jinshen remained still, composed, and seemingly oblivious. His focus was elsewhere, his mind running through the day's tasks, while the man continued to hum, occasionally glancing at him with faint amusement.
When the elevator finally reached the underground garage, the doors opened with a soft chime. Jinshen stepped out not sparing the man another glance as he walked toward his car.
The man watched Jinshen's retreating figure as he walked, his focus on his lower body. His gaze lingered for a moment before he let out a low whistle.
"Damn. He sure has nice legs." he murmured with a smirk, turning in the opposite direction to get to his own car.
Li Jinshen settled into his car, as he reached for the rearview mirror, a sudden shiver ran down his spine.
'Did I turn the air conditioner on?' He thought, glancing at the controls. Everything was off. He shrugged it off as nothing and started the car, smoothly pulling out of the garage. The drive to the company was quiet, and his mind drifted to the day ahead, already sorting through the tasks he needed to handle.
When he arrived at the Liwei Group building, he parked in the designated VIP section of the underground garage. As he entered the building, the two security guards stationed at the entrance straightened and bowed slightly.
"Good morning, Vice President Li!" one of them greeted.
"Good morning." Jinshen replied with a brief nod, his tone calm but polite.
Walking through the building, he received similar greetings from the employees he passed. Some bowed slightly, others simply murmured 'Good morning, Vice President Li'. Jinshen acknowledged each with a simple nod, his expression composed but not unapproachable.
He stepped into the executive elevator, reserved for the highest-ranking members of the company, and toke it to the floor below the president's office. When the doors slid open, his efficient and ever-reliable secretary, Zhang Wei, was already standing by his office door, a tablet in hand.
"Good morning, Vice President Li." the young man greeted, stepping aside to let Jinshen enter.
"Good morning." Jinshen replied as he walked into the spacious office. It has a simple design, with a large glass desk, neat piles of documents, and a view of the city skyline through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Secretary Wei followed him inside, already prepared to go over the day's schedule. "Here's the plan for today, sir. First, there's the quarterly financial report review at 10 a.m. with the finance department." He tapped the tablet, scrolling. "Then, you have a meeting with the legal team regarding the terms of the new supplier contracts at 1 p.m. After that, there's a strategy session with the marketing team at 3 p.m. about the upcoming product launch."
Jinshen nodded, taking off his jacket and hanging it on the back of his chair. "Have the finance team prepare a detailed breakdown of the company's expenses for the last quarter. I want a focus on operational costs—see if there's anywhere we can cut without affecting productivity."
Secretary Wei nodded, quickly noting it down. "Understood, sir."
"As for the legal team-" Jinshen continued, sitting down and flipping through the stack of papers on his desk. " -make sure they highlight any clauses in the supplier contracts that could cause complications down the line. I don't want surprises six months from now."
"I'll notify them to prepare a summary for the meeting."
Jinshen leaned back slightly, glancing at the schedule. "Anything else I should know?"
"There's also the shareholder dinner this Friday evening. The president's office suggested you attend on behalf of the CEO Mr. Li Jianyu."
Jinshen's eyes flickered for a moment, but his voice remained steady. "Let the president's office know I'll be there."
"Yes, sir." Secretary Wei hesitated for a moment before adding "The PR department also flagged a potential issue—rumors about delays in the upcoming product launch. They'll need your input on how to address it during the marketing meeting."
"Tell them I'll pass by tomorrow." Jinshen nodded once more. "If that's all, you can go."
He bowed slightly before leaving the room, closing the door softly behind him. Alone in the office, Jinshen leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desk. His sharp gaze swept over the documents before him.
"This world really doesn't waste time." he muttered to himself, his tone calm but with a trace of amusement.
With that, he picked up the first report and began reviewing it, his focus entirely on the task at hand.
***
After several hours of hardwork, looking over reports and documents, Jinshen stretched in his chair, rolling his shoulders to ease the tension. His gaze shifted to the remaining paperwork, and he let out a quiet sigh of defeat.
He glanced at the clock—it was already lunchtime. With a quick press of the intercom, he called secretary Wei.
"Arrange my lunch." He said simply before returning to his work.
Just as he was about to pick up another document, his phone buzzed on the desk. Hearing the familiar ringtone, he picked it up without hesitation.
"Hello, father." he said, leaning back in his chair.
"Ah! Jinshen, finally." Grandpa Li's warm but firm voice came through. "You've been so busy you might have forgotten you even have a father."
"Of course not." Jinshen replied smoothly, though there was a faint smile tugging at his lips. "I've just been tied up with work. You know how it is."
"Hmph! tied up with work. You're going to give yourself grey hair before I do." Grandpa Li said, though there was no real bite in his tone. "Anyway, I'm calling because I need you to prepare for something."
"Prepare for what?" Jinshen asked, sitting up a little straighter.
"Next week is my old friend Zhang Wei's 70th birthday party." He said, his voice carrying a hint of pride. "You're coming with me to give our blessings. It's an important occasion."
"Of course." Jinshen replied calmly. "What day is the party?"
"Friday evening." He answered promptly. "And you're not going alone. Jianyu is coming too."
Jinshen raised an eyebrow. "Why didn't you tell him directly?"
There was a brief pause before Grandpa Li sighed. "That boy has been impossible to get ahold of lately. Either he's avoiding my calls or he's too distracted with whatever he's doing these days."
"Probably avoiding." Jinshen said dryly, earning a soft chuckle from his father.
"Well, it's easier to tell you anyway. You're better at handling him." He added.
At that moment, another voice interrupted. "Let me talk to him, Zhiyuan!"
There was the sound of a small shuffle before Grandma Li's cheerful voice came through. "Jinshen, darling, how have you been? Are you eating properly?"
Jinshen's voice softened slightly. "I'm fine, mother. And yes, I'm eating well."
"Are you sure? You always skip meals when you're working too much." She said, her tone playful but laced with concern. "If you keep this up, you'll look older than your old man!"
"I'm managing." Jinshen said patiently. "But I'll make a note to eat more just so you don't worry."
"That's my boy." Grandma Li's tone brightened, but she didn't stop. "Now, don't forget about Zhang Wei's party. He's been talking about it for weeks, and you know how he gets. And make sure you and Jianyu are on time. I want none of this showing up fashionably late nonsense."
"Noted." Jinshen replied.
"And wear something nice, not one of those plain suits of yours." she added with mock seriousness. "This is a formal occasion, and you represent the Li family."
"Understood, Mother." Jinshen said, his tone even but his face filled with faint amusement. "Anything else?"
"Yes, one more thing." She said, lowering her voice slightly. "Keep an eye on your father at the party. He always drinks too much when he's with Zhang Wei."
"I heard that!" Grandpa Li's voice cut in, sounding offended.
"You were meant to!" Grandma Li shot back before sighing dramatically. "Anyway, Jinshen, just make sure everything goes smoothly. And please, remind Jianyu. He can't keep ignoring these important events."
"I will." Jinshen said.
"Good. Now take care of yourself. We'll see you next week!" She said warmly before handing the phone back to her husband.
Grandpa Li's voice returned, firmer this time. "Remember, this is a special occasion so don't let that boy mess it up."
"I'll handle it father. Goodbye." Jinshen said smoothly.
"Goodbye." Zhiyuan said before hanging up.
Jinshen set the phone down and let out a quiet sigh. The day wasn't even over, and he was already feeling drained.
A knock at the door broke his thoughts as his secretary stepped inside with his lunch.
"Sir, your lunch!" He placed the lunchbox on the desk.
"Thank you." Jinshen said. "Before you leave, check the planner. I need Friday evening cleared for a birthday party."
"Understood, sir." He said, pulling out his tablet. "Shall I reschedule any existing appointments for that time?"
"Push anything non-urgent to Monday." Jinshen replied, picking up his chopsticks.
Secretary Wei nodded, typing quickly. "Noted. Anything else, sir?"
"No, that's all for now." Jinshen said with a faint nod, dismissing him.
As the secretary left, Jinshen began eating, his thoughts already returning to work.
After finishing his lunch, he spent the rest of the afternoon tackling the documents and attending meetings. By the time he was done, the office was quiet, with most of the staff having already gone home. The golden glow of the setting sun streamed through his office window as he leaned back in his chair stretching his arms.
He sighed and he started arranging his desk. As he tidied up his desk, his mind wandered back to the moment he arrived in this world.
"Something about this feels... strange." he thought, pausing for a moment with a document in hand.
It wasn't that he wasn't capable of staying calm—he'd always prided himself on his ability to keep a cool head under anything. But the way he had so easily slipped into this life felt unnatural. He'd died, painfully at that, and barely had a moment to process it before being thrown into this entirely different world.
Normally, he would have been questioning everything—the system, the world, his role here. But somehow, he hadn't. He'd just accepted it, going along with the system's explications as if it was the most natural thing to do.
He frowned slightly, tapping his fingers against the desk.
"I'm not the type to act so close to people I don't know, even if they're family in this world. And yet, I've been interacting with them like it's completely normal. It's almost like... something is pushing me to fit in."
The thought sent a faint shiver down his spine, but instead of fear, he felt a spark of curiosity.
"Well, whatever's going on, I'll figure it out." He smirked to himself. He liked puzzles, and this one seemed to be a difficult challenge.
When his desk was finally in order, Jinshen grabbed his jacket and left the office. His secretary was waiting by the door, tablet in hand.
"Vice President Li." Said secretary Wei with a small nod.
"That's it for today." Jinshen replied, buttoning his jacket. "Let's go over tomorrow's schedule before I leave."
Secretary Wei tapped on his tablet and began scrolling. "At 9 a.m., you have a meeting with the PR department to address the product launch rumors. At 11 a.m., there's a session with R&D to discuss prototype testing and development timelines. In the afternoon, you've got some time blocked off for internal reviews, and I've scheduled a brief with the legal team at 3 p.m. to finalize supplier contracts."
"Good." Jinshen nodded. "Make sure the PR team has concrete solutions for the rumors. I don't want vague ideas—they need a plan we can implement immediately."
"I'll remind them." He said, typing a quick note.
"As for the R&D meeting, have them prepare an updated risk assessment for the prototypes." Jinshen added. "We need to anticipate potential delays and challenges."
"Understood, sir." Secretary Wei paused, glancing at the tablet again. "Friday evening remains clear. I've moved the non-urgent tasks to next Monday as per your instructions."
"Good work," Jinshen said with a slight smile. "That'll be all for now. Have a good evening."
"You too, Sir." He bowed slightly and walked off.
As Jinshen stepped into the elevator, he wasn't alone. Leaning casually against the back wall, scrolling through his phone, was Li Jianyu. The young CEO glanced up when the elevator doors closed, a grin spreading across his face when he saw Jinshen.
"Uncle!" Jianyu greeted with a smirk. "Working late again?"
"Just finishing up," Jinshen replied. "Though I'm surprised to see you here. Don't you usually leave the office before five?"
Jianyu laughed, tucking his phone into his pocket. "What can I say? I'm feeling extra responsible today."
Jinshen raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced. "Responsible, or did something come up that forced you to stay?"
Jianyu shrugged. "A bit of both. I had a meeting with the marketing team, and it ran longer than expected. You know how it is."
"Running late because you're distracted again?" Jinshen asked, his tone calm but pointed.
Jianyu rolled his eyes, though his grin didn't fade. "You don't have to lecture me, Uncle. I'm handling it."
"You call neglecting half your responsibilities 'handling it'?" Jinshen replied. "You can't run a company by winging it, Jianyu. At some point, it'll catch up to you."
"You really enjoy lecturing me, don't you?" Jianyu said, leaning back against the wall.
"I wouldn't have to if you listened the first time." Jinshen said while rubbing his his head.
Jianyu sighed, but there was no real frustration in his tone. "Alright, alright. What's the latest thing I'm apparently doing wrong?"
"Nothing...yet." Jinshen said, his tone softening slightly. "But there is something you need to be aware of. Father called me earlier. Uncle Zhang Wei's 70th birthday party is next Friday evening, and we're both expected to attend."
Jianyu groaned, throwing his head back dramatically. "A party? Do I have to? You know how boring those things are."
"Yes, you have to," Jinshen replied firmly. "He made it very clear that your presence is non-negotiable. And if you don't go, you'll be hearing from him directly. Is that what you want?"
Jianyu sighed again, muttering under his breath. "Fine. What time is it?"
"7 to 8 PM. And mother also insisted we arrive on time, properly dressed and without causing a scene" Jinshen added putting emphasis on the last one.
Jianyu smirked. "What does she think I'm going to do? Flip the dessert table?"
"Something like that," Jinshen replied, amused. "But seriously, Jianyu. Don't make this harder than it needs to be."
"Alright, I'll be there," Jianyu said, holding up his hands in surrender. "Anything else? Should I bring flowers too or prepare a poetry recitation?" His tone filling in pure sarcasm.
"Just show up, behave, and don't cause a scene. That's all anyone's asking."
The elevator dinged, and the doors slid open to the underground garage. The two stepped out and began walking toward their cars.
"You know," Jianyu said after a moment, glancing sideways at Jinshen. "You're the only one who can talk to me like this without me getting annoyed."
"Because you know I'm right," Jinshen replied smoothly.
"Debatable," Jianyu said with a grin. "But you do make some good points. Sometimes."
Jinshen chuckled softly, unlocking his car. "Drive safe, Jianyu."
"Yeah, yeah. You too, Uncle." Jianyu waved lazily as he headed toward his own car.
Li Jinshen watched as Jianyu strode across the garage, hands in his pockets, before climbing into his car. He leaned back in his own seat for a moment, drumming his fingers on the steering wheel.
"He doesn't look anything like the CEO described in the story." Jinshen thought. "In the novel, Jianyu was supposed to be overbearing, cold, and emotionally clueless. A textbook example of a romance CEO."
But the Li Jianyu from Li Jinshen's memories—and the one he'd just spoken to—was different. He was headstrong and impulsive, sure, but he didn't fit the stereotype. He laughed, he bantered, and he seemed... human.
"It makes sense, though." Jinshen reasoned as he started the car and pulled out of the garage. "This isn't just a story anymore. It's a real world, with real people. Of course there would be differences. The Jianyu here isn't just a two-dimensional character on a page."
That realization hit him in an odd way. The novel's version of Jianyu might have been a disaster waiting to happen, but this Jianyu? There was potential for him to grow—if someone could keep him from self-destructing first.
***
Li Jinshen parked his car in the underground garage of his apartment building and stepped out, glancing briefly at the other cars around him. As always, the space was filled with high-end vehicles, a silent reminder of the kind of people who lived here.
Making his way to the lobby, he passed the security guards who greeted him as usual.
"Good evening, sir." one of them said with a polite nod.
Jinshen just nodded in response before walking toward the elevator.
He stepped inside and pressed the button for his floor, leaning back slightly on the elevator wall. But just before the doors could close, they slid open again, and a familiar figure walked in. It was the same man he'd seen that morning.
Jinshen straightened slightly, studying him out of the corner of his eye. He was tall and well-dressed, his tailored suit fitting him perfectly. His sharp features were softened by the enthusiastic smile he directed at Jinshen.
"Is he new here?" Jinshen wondered. "I don't recall seeing him around before."
"Hello." Jinshen greeted politely, remembering how preoccupied he had been earlier. He hadn't even spared the man a proper glance that morning, too caught up in his thoughts about the system and his sudden arrival in this world.
"Hello! Nice to meet you!" the man replied, his tone bright and cheerful.
Jinshen's brow twitched slightly at the man's enthusiasm, but he quickly masked it with his standard polite smile.
"He's way too cheerful." He thought. "Nice to meet you too."
The elevator continued its way in this awkward silence after that. Jinshen didn't press for more conversation, and neither did the man.
When they reached the fifth floor, the elevator chimed, and the man turned back briefly, smiling warmly. "Well, here's my stop. See you around!"
Jinshen just gave a polite nod, watching as the man walked off before the elevator doors closed again and continued up to his floor.
---
On the fifth floor, the man paused for a moment, his gaze lingering on the elevator display as it showed the elevator stopping at the seventh floor. A faint smile appeared on his face.
"I should thank Chen Yu for recommending this place," he murmured before turning and walking to his apartment.
---
Meanwhile, on the seventh floor, Li Jinshen unlocked the door to his apartment and stepped inside. He set his keys on the entry table and removed his jacket, putting it over the back of a chair.
He headed straight to the bathroom, turning on the shower and stepping under the warm spray. The day's events replayed in his mind as he washed off the lingering tension. Meeting that man again had been unexpected, but Jinshen couldn't help but feel there was more to the man than his 'cheerful' exterior.
After drying off and slipping into a pair of loose lounge pants, Jinshen walked to his bedroom. He collapsed onto the large bed, lying back with his arms folded behind his head. The cool air from the AC brushed over his bare muscular chest as he stared at the ceiling.
"Didn't 49 mention something about a system store?" he thought suddenly. Curious, he thought 'Store' in his mind, and a semi-transparent blue panel appeared in front of him.
His eyes scanned the store's offerings, his brows raising slightly at the variety. There were items that seemed to come straight out of a fantasy or sci-fi story—cultivator techniques, advanced weaponry like laser guns to beautification and recovery pills and even blueprints for spaceships.
"This... is a lot. And I can't even afford it." he thought, scrolling through the categories. None of the items seemed immediately relevant to him and his empty points bank, so he closed the panel with a sigh.
"I have time anyway." The reminded himself. "The story's events haven't even started yet."
Turning onto his side, he reached over to turn off the bedside lamp, plunging the room into darkness.
"This world isn't exactly the same as the novel. So let's just observe first." He thought before drifting to sleep.
