Chapter 13: Chapter No.13 Spreading Happiness
[Meghnad's POV]
As we walked down the corridor towards the dining hall, the aroma of freshly cooked food wafted through the air, tantalizing my senses. Kavya had always ensured that meals were not just nutritious but also a source of comfort and pleasure. Her attention to detail and dedication to her role were unmatched, and I was fortunate to have her by my side.
Upon entering the dining hall, I was greeted by a spread of delectable dishes, each prepared with care and expertise. The table was adorned with a variety of vegetables, fruits, and delicacies that made my mouth water. I took my seat, and Kavya began serving the food, her movements graceful and efficient.
"Today's lesson with Lord Vibhishana seemed particularly intense," Kavya remarked as she placed a plate of mixed vegetables before me.
"It was," I admitted, taking a bite of the vibrant, flavorful dish. "Kakashri, Explained the fundamentals of Yogic Prana and its realms to me. But as it is still too early for me to unlock my Yogic Prana I was told to build a firm foundation by doing the exercise described in this scroll."
Kavya nodded in understanding, her eyes reflecting both concern and encouragement. "It sounds like Lord Vibhishana provided you with valuable insights. Building a solid foundation is crucial, especially when dealing with something as profound as Yogic Prana."
I took another bite of the meal, savoring the well-balanced flavors. "Yes, the exercises are designed to enhance my mental and spiritual discipline. Even though I can't access Yogic Prana yet, these practices are meant to prepare me for when I can."
Kavya's gaze was filled with warmth. "Your commitment to your training is inspiring. I do not doubt that your diligence will pay off. It's the small, consistent efforts that often lead to the greatest achievements."
As we continued to eat, I reflected on the day's lesson. Kakashri delved into the complexities of Yogic Prana, explaining its various aspects and the role it would play in my development as a prince. The exercises were rigorous, involving meditation, breath control, and focused concentration. Each practice was designed to help me attune my mind and spirit, laying the groundwork for more advanced techniques.
"Yuvraj, what do you want to do now that you don't have to go back to your studies immediately?" Kavya asked, her tone gentle yet curious.
I considered her question for a moment, looking around the elegantly appointed dining hall. "I would like to roam the city if you don't mind. It's been a while since I've had the chance to experience the daily life of our people firsthand. I think it would be beneficial to observe and understand their lives outside the palace walls."
Kavya's eyes widened slightly with surprise, but she quickly masked it with a smile. "That's an admirable idea, Yuvraj. I'll arrange for a discreet escort to accompany you, ensuring your safety-"
"No guards, please. You alone are enough," I interrupted her, sensing that a more personal experience would be lost if surrounded by an entourage. "I want to blend in and experience the city as a commoner would."
Kavya hesitated, clearly concerned but ultimately resigned. "Very well, Yuvraj. I will accompany you myself. I'll ensure that we are cautious and blend in as best we can."
I smiled, appreciating her willingness. "Thank you, Kavya. I'm looking forward to this."
After our meal, Kavya helped me change into simpler clothing that would allow me to blend in more easily with the city's inhabitants. We selected attire that was practical and unassuming—a plain tunic and trousers, along with a simple cloak to shield me from the sun and provide some modesty.
We left the palace discreetly, avoiding the grand entrance and instead using a lesser-known side gate. The city awaited us beyond its ancient walls, vibrant and alive with the hum of daily life.
As we walked through the bustling streets, the sights and sounds of Lanka enveloped us. Vendors called out their wares, children played games in the open spaces, and artisans demonstrated their crafts. The atmosphere was a tapestry of color and energy, a sharp contrast to the controlled serenity of the palace.
Kavya stayed close by, her keen eyes scanning the surroundings to ensure our safety. We moved with purpose but without drawing attention. I found myself drawn to the markets, where merchants displayed a variety of goods—from exotic spices to intricate jewelry. The aroma of street food was tantalizing, and I couldn't resist stopping at a small stall to sample a local delicacy.
The vendor, an elderly woman with a warm smile, handed me a steaming, fragrant parcel. "Try this, young man. It's a specialty of our district."
I took a bite, savoring the blend of flavors. "It's delicious! Thank you."
The vendor's eyes twinkled with pride. "I'm glad you like it. It's made with love and tradition."
"It's so much more flavorful than I expected," I remarked, savoring the last bite of the delicacy. The combination of spices and textures was extraordinary, far surpassing the often bland fare served within the palace walls.
The vendor's smile broadened, her pride evident. "You have a discerning palate, young man. This recipe has been passed down through generations. And it would be three copper coins."
My face lost its color as I forgot to bring money with me. I reached into my pockets, searching for something to pay with, but found nothing.
"I... I seem to have forgotten my coins," I said, feeling a pang of embarrassment. "I truly apologize."
The vendor's smile faltered slightly, but she remained kind. "No matter, young man. It's important to enjoy the food and appreciate the tradition behind it. You don't need to pay."
I was taken aback by her generosity. "I insist on paying. It's only fair. Please, let me make it right."
"It's okay, Young man. I will just assume my son ate those delicacies," the vendor said with a gentle laugh. "He always had a hearty appetite."
"Your son seems like a very lucky person to have such a mother," I said with a grateful smile, touched by her kindness.
The vendor's expression turned into longing and sadness as a wistful smile touched her lips. "Ah, he was. My son passed away a year ago. He was my joy and my pride, and I miss him dearly. He loved these treats more than anyone else. I like to think that he would be happy to know that others are enjoying what he loved."
I don't know what came over me but I immediately pulled her into a hug, As I embraced her, I could feel the depth of her sorrow and the weight of her memories. The warmth of her presence was a stark reminder of the fragility and beauty of life. Her body tensed for a moment, but then she relaxed into the hug, a soft sigh escaping her lips.
"Thank you," she said quietly, her voice trembling slightly. "I appreciate your kindness more than you know."
"I am sorry for your loss, but you still have a son in the memories you cherish," I said softly, trying to offer some solace. "His spirit lives on in the traditions and love he left behind. The way you speak of him, it's clear that he was deeply loved."
The vendor's eyes shimmered with unshed tears as she held onto the edges of her apron. "You have a comforting way about you, young man. Sometimes, it's hard to see beyond the pain, but your words bring a measure of peace."
"But if it's still not enough, now you have me. You can see me as your son for today," I said, my voice filled with sincerity. "Let me be a small part of the joy you once shared with him."
The vendor looked at me with a mix of astonishment and happiness as her eyes started to tear up. "Your kindness is truly overwhelming," she said, her voice choked with emotion. "Thank you for understanding and for this unexpected comfort. It's as if my son's spirit has returned to me, if only for a moment."
I gently released the vendor from the hug, giving her a reassuring smile. Her tears had slowed, and a faint smile began to return to her face. She took a deep breath, clearly moved by the unexpected gesture.
"You are a remarkable young man," she said, wiping her tears with the back of her hand. "I will remember this day fondly. You've given me a precious gift today."
I nodded, feeling a sense of fulfillment from our brief but meaningful interaction. "Thank you for sharing a piece of your heart with me. And thank you for the delicious food. It's truly a taste of tradition and love."
"Where do you live son? I will come visit you," I hesitated, unsure how to respond without revealing my true identity. I had chosen to blend in and avoid drawing attention, so mentioning the palace or giving away my real status would contradict my intent.
"Ah, I don't live in the city," I said diplomatically. "I'm just a visitor today. But I'll remember this place and your kindness."
The vendor's eyes softened with understanding, though she still looked a bit curious. "I see. Well, if you ever find yourself back here, please do visit. You've touched my heart in a way that few have."
I nodded gratefully, feeling a warm sense of connection. "I will, thank you. And remember, your son's spirit lives on in the joy and love you continue to share with others."
Kavya, who had been quietly observing, stepped forward with a gentle smile. "It's time for us to go, Yuvraj."
I gave the vendor one last reassuring smile before turning to follow Kavya. As we walked away, I glanced back to see the vendor standing at her stall, her expression a blend of peace and gratitude.
I turned toward Kavya and said, "Give her a chest full of gold and tell her it's from a grateful stranger. I want her to know her kindness has made a difference."
Kavya nodded a hint of approval in her eyes. "Understood, Yuvraj. I will make sure she receives it."
