Chapter 148 - 148: Going Out to Clean Up
Chapter 148: Chapter 148: Going Out to Clean Up
“Old Liang, that area in City West is desolate. Are you sure you want to build a base there? Do you realize how difficult that will be?”
Li Haochu, in charge of the refuge’s security, was the first to object. The place in City West had been dubbed “Ghost City” for years before the apocalypse started. Although it had somewhat improved in the later years, its improvement was only due to land sales and housing speculation, which he was reluctant to deal with.
“Ha, you old rascal, if not in a barren place, do you plan to build in the middle of a crowded zombie nest?” Liang Wei laughed despite his irritation.
“What’s wrong with a zombie nest? Just have my men blow it up; my soldiers are quite capable!”
Indeed, Li Haochu commanded a significant military force, and he naturally favored solving problems through brute force. If it weren’t for Liang Wei’s restraint, he would have already led his troops to a decisive battle against the zombies.
In the apocalypse, Liang Wei had only agreed to use him. If it were before the apocalypse, Li Haochu’s straightforward nature could have gotten him kicked into some forgotten corner of the mountains. It was only because Liang Wei had always protected him before the apocalypse that he was willing to listen to Liang Wei now.
“I agree with Old Liang. We can’t afford too many more sacrifices, and with poor medical conditions and not enough hands, finding a base quickly to settle everyone would be great,” Xu Mingzhi said.
He was in charge of medical and research at the refuge. The recent increase in injuries had overwhelmed him; he even had to personally administer injections in the medical center, but there were still not enough hands.
“Anyway, aren’t we going there tomorrow? Let’s all go have a look together,” Shao Zian said nonchalantly.
“Yeah, Zian is right. Tomorrow, you all come with me to check it out. According to Jiuhui, the zombies there have mostly been cleared out, and Dragon Leap Villa is mostly clean as well…”
“Really? Then I must see who is so capable tomorrow,” Li Haochu’s voice carried through the thin door.
…
The soldier guarding outside felt as if a breeze had just passed by, but after carefully looking around and seeing no one, he continued to stand at attention.
Zhao Bin was quite angry today because Sun Yixue had not been able to provide food for him and his brothers, leading to him beating her up to vent some of his anger. He didn’t know when that person would come, but every time he did come, he brought a lot of supplies to distribute among them.
Just then, someone knocked on the warehouse door; hearing the regular rhythm, Zhao Bin joyfully got up. It was him!
“Boss, shouldn’t we let him in?”
The brother standing guard at night also knew Zhao Bin had higher-ups, but no one had ever seen that person. They said he was a manager in the refuge.
“No need, I’ll go out. You watch here and don’t let anyone out,”
Zhao Bin glanced around the warehouse; most of his men were asleep. Liu Jiajin, in the corner, still looked barely alive. And that woman, who had just been beaten by him, likely wouldn’t dare cause any trouble.
So Zhao Bin confidently walked outside.
“Remember, tomorrow, Dragon Leap Villa, proceed as planned,”
A cool male voice came from the shadows. The moon, obscured by thick clouds, occasionally shone through the gaps in the clouds, but Zhao Bin still couldn’t see who the newcomer was. He only knew the man had a codename.
It was only recently that he had been informed that all future communications with him would be via someone called Ying Yue.
Zhao Bin remembered the man wearing a mask and hat, all mysterious and impossible to identify, but from his voice alone, he knew he was young. However, since he was one of his boss’s men, Zhao Bin wouldn’t dare ask too much.
“Got it, will you guys be there too?” Zhao Bin was still a bit worried; he wasn’t sure if this young man was reliable.
The person did not immediately respond, and after a few seconds, Zhao Bin heard a voice from the darkness, “Go.”
That was good, Zhao Bin could finally rest assured. If that person also went, he wouldn’t have to worry about their plan failing. After all, as Special Ability Users united in strength, dealing with those old fellows wouldn’t be too difficult.
Before Ying Yue left, she had left behind a large box of items, which Zhao Bin had moved into the storeroom. When he opened it, it turned out to be a box of food!
Inside were ham, marinated eggs, as well as bread, biscuits, and water…
It really was a grand gesture; she always managed to get them so many good things.
If tomorrow’s plan succeeded, he deserved to become the second-in-command of the future base, as had been promised to him. Moreover, being a Fire Element Ability User, he would have as many supplies as he wanted, and as many women as he wanted, too. The Apocalypse would be a paradise for him and his brothers!
Sun Yixue, noticing Zhao Bin’s markedly improved mood, knew someone had just visited. Could it have been Zhao Bin’s boss?
“Xueer, you’re coming with me to do something big tomorrow,”
Zhao Bin said, pinching Sun Yixue’s thigh. He wasn’t genuinely keen on having this woman join him, but considering she was a Space Element Ability User, if there were any valuable items, she could store them in her space. That was why he said it.
“Tomorrow? So soon?”
Sun Yixue, resisting the pain, was actually pleased. She hadn’t expected Zhao Bin’s plan to be implemented so soon. Her day to shine was coming!
Zhao Bin did not notice that, in the corner, Liu Jiajin who had been curled up on a pile of old rags was now slowly crawling back from another direction, and then sat quietly with his head down, pretending to be asleep.
The night air was cool, and the shadows of trees on the ground were distinct. If one could ignore the occasional mournful wails of zombies nearby, it might have been a beautiful night.
…
Early the next morning, Su Jin fetched a rich breakfast from her space, recalling that everyone was heading out to clear zombies today, and even added a large plate of marinated beef to the table.
Lin Xiuyuan wiped the nosebleed that had started to flow from his nose; had he overindulged last night?
The warm shrimp porridge slid down everyone’s throats, making them all feel thoroughly comfortable.
Local Tyrant Gold also wanted some porridge, sniffing endlessly at Su Jin’s bowl. Su Jin took a short spoon for him and served him a separate bowl. He actually started to eat with a spoon like a human, though his grip on the spoon was a bit awkward.
“Why don’t you guys take Local Tyrant Gold with you today?” Su Jin suggested to everyone.
“To help it learn the route?” Shi Jin asked.
Everyone had heard that Local Tyrant Gold had a knack for remembering paths, but they had only seen it once in the jungle and had never heard of a monkey being able to navigate in the city.
“Yes, take it with you,”
Lu Hao agreed, even if Local Tyrant Gold was not needed for directions today, if it could get a bit familiar with the outside, perhaps…
“Maybe it’s the fate between Xiao Hao and the little monkey,” Aunt Lin Tianzhen smiled as she spoke. The last time everyone was chatting, they had discussed this. One was directionally challenged, and the other was a route-finding king; they complemented each other perfectly.
Lu Hao twitched the corner of his mouth, glancing at Local Tyrant Gold who had finished the shrimp porridge to the last bit. Why would he have fate with a monkey? Wasn’t Su Jin supposed to be his fated partner?
