Reborn as a DRAGON

Chapter 9: A Dragon’s breath

'The book could be read by anyone with the intellectual and emotional intelligence it took to gain an instinctive comprehension of the ancient symbols and translate that into their tongue. In other words, they needed to have the capacity for the subconscious and imaginative brain to talk directly to their conscious part, thus transmitting the ideas concretely to themselves and to others. This way, they are able to not only read the language of the Gods but to also apply it practical manner to affect their surroundings and use what is called Divine magic. However, one who needs teaching how to read the symbols and signs can never become a true master, yet they may take comfort from knowing that a true master only appears every few thousand years or less.' —Records of Rolus, the first archmage.

'I'm dead, that's it.' My mind was working on overdrive as a roar escaped my lips. To my immediate surprise, however, it was not a normal roar.

A faint blueish beam of 'something' rushed forward from my mouth and towards my still surprised father. I did not have any time to think about what was happening in front of me as everything seemed to move so fast.

My beam attack although sounding very impressive did not do much, no it's safe to say it didn't do anything. The attack landed against my father's enormous chest scales and disappeared with a puff.

'That's just fucking cheating!' I yelled inwardly.

'What the hell is that sorry excuse of a Dragon's breath?!' My disappointment was immeasurable, and it was safe to say that for a second, just a tiny second, I forgot about the fact that I had just launched an attack and stood up to my father.

'Is this how far I go?' I chuckled inwardly all the while keeping my gaze locked with his. 'Hell if I'm going to die, at least I won't die with my head down.'

Although I tried to stand firm facing the humongous figure of a Dragon in front of me, my body was still shaking uncontrollably. 'What was I even thinking? I did not want to die, my life had barely even started, why the hell did I have to do that?!'

Various thoughts rang across my mind as Images from my past life begun to flash in front of my eyes. 'Fuck, that was a shitty life.' If I were to be reincarnated again, I at least hope It won't be as a human.

My internal struggle continued as an oppressive silence descended on the area with my father's eyes strained at me. While I was thinking of various ways how he could end me, Golden boy suddenly perked up, he looked at me and then back at father before throwing his head high and letting out a loud cry.

'What the hell is this idiot doing, can't he read the mood?' I was momentarily at loss for words at my stupid sibling who most probably just dug his own grave next to mine.

Before I could process what was happening, White did the same unleashing a roar of her own, she, however, managed to unleash a similar beam at father, the only difference was that hers was a white one like the color of her scales.

Needless to say, the attack did absolutely nothing against father as he simply continued to watch us with evident interest in his intelligent eyes. Not wanting to be left out, Blacky let out a roar of his own, with another obsidian beam shooting at father. Green was the last one, her cry came out akin to that of a small animal, cute rather than fierce and intimidating. She like Golden boy was unable to use that strange beam attack.

With me in a step ahead, my siblings quickly managed to shake off father's intimidating aura as they regained control over their bodies. For a second, the mood turned deathly still as I could hear the sound of my heart beating in my ears.

'What is he going to do now?' I thought as I carefully observed him.

It was then that father's expression took a subtle change, he opened his large maw and let out what seemed to be a laugh? I was not quite sure as the sound came off akin to drums in my ears.

'He's laughing? Does that mean we are safe?' I gulped.

Just as I was thinking about such a thing, his enormous eye suddenly dropped down and stared straight at me seemingly able to see through my very soul.

He then opened his large jaw as a spinning red flame abruptly appeared, it quickly grew in size as the air itself surrounding it begun to break. 'What the-'

I was unable to finish my train of thought as my father's fire breath shot forward. An unbearable heatwave passed by my side as the fire breath missed me and continued to the forest behind.

My jaw dropped unconsciously as I slowly glanced to my right, the green forest, the large trees, the colorful flowers were all no more, the fire had completely decimated everything in its path leaving behind a large sea of crimson flames.

An entire part of the forest was now missing as if a meteor had just dropped by. Glancing behind me, I was unable to even estimate how far back the damage must have extended to.

I unconsciously gulped down once again, the flames did not spread to the other trees except for those in their path. It was as if the flames had a will of themselves.

Although terrified, with the heat emitting from the fire my scales felt like they were going to melt off, yet strangely, I was excited. Would I ever be able to become that strong someday? Is this the real power of an adult Dragon? Are all Dragons this strong? I had so many questions, yet too few answers.

I turned back to glance at my siblings who were still slack-jawed from the previous attack, before sneaking a peek at my father. His eyes met mine and I could almost see the smirk on his face, his expression seemed to be telling me.

'This is what a real Dragon breath looks like!'

He then turned his attention away from me and back to the still-burning flames. With a low growl, the blaze suddenly disappeared with a puff leaving behind a destroyed forest but no fire.

I had to admit. 'God damn it, my father is too damn cool.'
