The evening at the orphanage was always a mix of lively chatter, laughter, and the sounds of children running around. For Kaito, though, it was just another quiet time of reflection. He had spent the day in school and basketball practice, fully immersed in his plan, but now that the day was winding down, he felt the need to share his latest development with the others.
His mind, as always, was a flurry of calculations, but there was also something else—a sense of responsibility.
Haru had always been there for him, a steady presence in the orphanage, and he knew Haru would understand. After all, Haru was the oldest of the orphans, nearly 16 years old, and he had always looked out for the younger kids.
Kaito trusted him more than anyone else in the orphanage.
Kaito entered the orphanage's common room, where the younger orphans were gathered around the television, watching a cartoon. The flickering light of the screen illuminated their faces, casting a warm glow.
Some of the kids were talking about their school day, and others were teasing each other about the upcoming weekend, but they all stopped talking as soon as Kaito stepped in.
"Hey, Kaito!" Hana called out from the corner, looking up from a pile of paperwork she was sifting through.
Miss Hana had been working late recently, trying to balance the orphanage's finances and looking into ways to expand. Her tired eyes softened when they met Kaito's gaze. "You're back early today. How was your day?"
"Good," Kaito replied casually, though his mind was elsewhere. He spotted Haru sitting in his usual spot by the window, staring out at the dusky sky.
Haru always had a thoughtful expression on his face, as though he was trying to figure out the meaning of the world itself. Kaito approached him and sat down.
"Got something to tell you, Haru," Kaito said, his voice soft, but filled with an almost imperceptible excitement.
Haru turned to face him, raising an eyebrow. "Oh? What's going on?"
Kaito paused for a moment before speaking again. "Mr. Tyler offered me a spot at his training center."
Haru blinked in disbelief. "Wait, what? Mr. Tyler—your basketball coach?"
"Yeah," Kaito confirmed, nodding. "He saw me dribble and shoot today. Said I had a lot of potential and that he wanted me to come to his training center this Saturday. It's pretty serious, Haru. I'll get advanced training from him, and I think it'll help me with... everything."
Haru leaned back in his chair, clearly taken aback. "You're ten, Kaito. What do you mean by advanced training? You've only been playing for a few hours, right?"
Kaito smiled, a knowing smile. "You'd be surprised how much I can do in a few hours."
There was a long silence as Haru processed this. The other orphans, still distracted by the TV, started to pick up on the conversation, glancing at Kaito and Haru curiously.
Miss Hana, sensing something important was happening, stood up and walked over.
"Kaito," She asked, "What's this about a training center?"
Kaito turned to her, giving a short nod. "Mr. Tyler, my basketball coach, has invited me to come to his training center. He said I have a natural talent for the game."
One of the older girls, Lily, blinked in surprise. "Wait, hold on. Mr. Tyler wants you to come train with him? That's impressive! I've seen him coach the high school team. He's tough, but he's also very good. To be chosen by him at your age..."
She trailed off, her thoughts lingering on the implications of this.
"Yeah," Kaito said, leaning back in his chair and casually crossing his arms. "He said I could be something special if I put my mind to it. So, I think I'll give it a try."
The room went silent.
The other kids were listening now, wide-eyed. Haru looked at Kaito with admiration, then turned to the others.
"Well, I'll be the first to say it," Haru said with a grin. "You're one talented kid, Kaito. I've never seen anyone dribble like you did today. And I've been watching basketball for years. No way someone your age could do that without some serious skills. You deserve the opportunity."
Some of the other kids began clapping, genuinely impressed.
"Kaito, you're amazing!" One of them shouted. "You'll be famous!"
Kaito chuckled softly. "It's just basketball, guys. No need to get all dramatic about it."
But even as he spoke those words, there was a subtle thrill in his chest. He was used to being admired for his strength and abilities, but this was different. This was the beginning of something he could actually use for his future plans—another tool in his ever-expanding arsenal.
Miss Hana smiled warmly at him. "I'm proud of you, Kaito. I can already tell you're going to go far. But remember, this is just the start. Keep working hard, and you'll go places."
Kaito nodded solemnly, though a small smirk tugged at the corners of his lips. "I will. But there's still a lot to be done. I'll be busy."
Haru raised an eyebrow at this. "What do you mean?"
Kaito stood up from his seat, feeling the familiar weight of responsibility on his shoulders. "The orphanage still needs a lot of work. We've got the donations, but I need to figure out how to really improve things for everyone here."
The room quieted again, and Miss Hana's face softened. She had been trying so hard to find ways to make the orphanage better, to provide for the children, but it was clear she didn't have the resources.
Kaito's plans weren't just about basketball or his personal ambitions; he was looking at the bigger picture.
"I know," Miss Hana said, "I've been thinking about it too. We're getting some money from the donors, but we still have a long way to go. There's always more we can do to help the kids here."
Kaito nodded, his gaze turning distant for a moment as he thought about the best course of action. "I think... I think I have an idea."
The other orphans leaned in, eager to hear what he had to say. Even Haru, who had been skeptical about Kaito's unorthodox approach to life, looked intrigued.
"I'm going to use my training to build connections," Kaito began, his voice steady, "...and then I'll bring in more donations. Big ones. The kind of money that can turn this place into something we can all be proud of. But it's going to take time, and I'm going to need everyone's help."
Haru laughed softly. "It's like you're building an empire, Kaito."
Kaito smirked. "Why not? The world works on connections and power. I'll use both."
Miss Hana looked at him, a sense of amazement washing over her. Kaito's maturity wasn't something that could be easily explained. He was a ten-year-old boy, but there was something in his eyes—something calculating, focused, and precise—that no one else his age possessed.
"I'll be here, Kaito," She said softly, her voice full of affection. "If you need any help, I'm with you. We all are."
"Thanks, Miss Hana," Kaito replied, his tone sincere, even if his mind was already racing ahead. "You've done enough. Now, it's my turn to make this place great."
The evening settled into a comfortable rhythm, and the younger kids resumed their play.
Haru leaned back in his chair, watching Kaito with an amused smile.
"You're something else, kid," Haru muttered. "I don't know where you came from, but I'm glad you're here."
Kaito didn't respond to Haru's comment right away. Instead, he watched the others as they laughed and played, their carefree innocence a stark contrast to his own thoughts. His world was not about innocence anymore—it was about power, influence, and control. And every step he took from here on out would be a calculated move toward those goals.
As the night drew to a close, Kaito lay in his bed, staring up at the ceiling, his mind racing with plans, schemes, and possibilities.
The orphanage would change.
And with his growing connections, his abilities, and his meticulous nature, Kaito was determined to see it happen. He wasn't just going to be a kid in an orphanage.
