Chapter 5: Ore Deposits & Forward base - 05
Riding my own submarine in the deep ocean—roughly 2,000 meters below the surface—felt oddly comforting now that I thought about it. Only my sonar was active; I didn't want to use the headlights just yet. The darkness around me was serene in its own way.
I mean, back when I played Subnautica, I used to swim with the seaglide in pitch black, relying solely on a 3D sonar. This felt pretty similar, except now, being an AI, I had all the knowledge I needed just by existing. It was like instinct.
At least there weren't any scary monsters here, unlike that game. Though… if I suddenly encountered something like the Bloop, well, that'd be a whole other problem entirely.
"Back to the task at hand." I muttered, focusing my thoughts. "I need to figure out a way to get resources where they're needed." Logistics… right. I probably needed some kind of supply depot. A place to act as a resource drop-off point, maybe with deployers to handle construction tasks like cranes in the Tiberium series.
"Not a bad idea," I thought to myself, letting the concept take shape in my mind. The supply depot could include nanoswarm deployers to repair nearby structures and maybe function as a small Mobile Construction Vehicle (MCV) if needed. Its primary purpose would be to repair, rearm, and keep nearby defenses operational.
"Although," I sighed, "designing something like that while diving might not be the easiest thing to do." My submarine continued its journey toward the northeast ore deposit. "Wait, who am I kidding? I'm an AI now. Multitasking should be second nature, right?"
With that, I let go of the handlebar with one hand and opened the designer app. One hand stayed steady on the controls while the other started sketching ideas.
Not even a minute into designing, I arrived at the ore deposit. I spotted one of the girls floating near the seabed, her flippers and booster-equipped legs allowing her to maneuver gracefully. She waved at me as I approached. Nearby, another girl stood still, controlling nanoswarms as they worked to assemble an ore derrick. The structure's frame was already in place, and I could see a PD graviton turret perched on one side. It looked like a compact version of a C-RAM, but instead of projectiles, it used graviton laser gatlings. It wasn't designed to counter submarines but to take out incoming missiles—and maybe the occasional dolphin or squid.
"Looks about 70% complete," I noted as I dove down to the seabed to greet the girls. Talking to Amy earlier had helped calm my nerves.
"Hello," I greeted with a smile as my feet touched the seafloor, kicking up a small cloud of dirt.
"Hi, Creator!" chirped a cheeky voice. The UMHU (Underwater Marine Harpoon Unit) girl bounced slightly as she landed, her buoyancy making her movement playful.
"H… hi," the other one said softly. Shy, huh? Why were engineers always the shy ones? Had I modeled them too much after myself? Back at the base, one of the engineers barely displayed any emotion. Maybe I'd overcorrected here.
"You can just call me Aqua," I said, trying to keep things casual. "What are your names?"
"Pama, at your service!" The UMHU girl saluted with exaggerated enthusiasm.
"I… I'm Tama, Cre—Aqua," the engineer stammered, clearly still trying to get used to dropping the "Creator" title, as I will my nanoswarm to help with the Ores derricks construction.
"Nice to meet you two," I said warmly, smiling as I processed their names. There was definitely some kind of theme here…
"So, I'm guessing you two were out exploring and found this deposit?" I asked, scanning the area with my sensors. The ore derrick construction was progressing smoothly.
Tama nodded as she recalled her nanoswarms. "Y-yes, we surveyed the surrounding area first. There's a chasm nearby, but the surface here is stable at around 2,300 meters, Aqua."
"Good, mostly flat terrain," I noted, nodding in approval.
"You two can head back to base now," I said. "On your way, set up sensor towers every 500 meters. I want to claim a 5-kilometer radius around the base."
Tama's shy nod and my encouragement made her blush slightly as I patted her head. Given her height, I had to jump a little, floating slightly in the water before sinking back down.
"Aqua-chan! I want head pats too!" Pama chimed in with a pout. Before I could react, she grabbed my hand and pressed it onto her head. I chuckled and obliged, ruffling her hair briefly.
"Take care, you two!" I waved as they swam off, heading back to base.
As the nanoswarm finished building the ore derrick, I turned my attention back to my design app. Time to finalize the supply depot. It would act as a forward base, providing repair and rearm capabilities. I added four cables for resource transfer to nearby structures and finalized the blueprint before hitting "Generate."
[Wargirl's Supply Depot]
Cost: $10,000 (10 Wargirls)
Power: -100 (10 Wargirls)
Hitpoints: 500 (+1000 Wargirls)
Prerequisite: MCV
Purpose: Base Expansion, Active Repair
Weapons: 4x Nanoswarm Deployers
Range: 4 / 20
The design was simple but effective: a cube roughly 4x4x4 meters, with four deployers and a grid-like exterior. The holes in the grid allowed nanoswarms to pass through for repairs or resource transfers. It looked functional, if a little boring. Still, it'd confuse the enemy; most of my faction's utility buildings looked similar, it also got 4 cables for long range resources transfer connection.
"Alright, time to put one down next to the ore deposit," I muttered, directing my nanoswarm to begin construction. Alongside the depot, I added a missile turret and a reactor for power.
With the supply depot underway, I opened a new design tab. It was time to create a new Kansen. The shipyard construction back at the base was progressing, so I'd need something ready soon.
I envisioned a small mini-submarine, something akin to the Epsilon forces' Piranha but faster and more powerful. It would have nuclear reactors for extended operations, double thrusters for speed, and four missile launchers for overwhelming firepower.
The result? A sleek, 60-meter-long, 10-meter-wide mini-sub packed with two nuclear reactors, double thrusters, four launch tubes, and enough internal storage for 1,200 missiles. I added two Graviton PD turrets for self-defense and a deployer for repairs.

After hitting "Generate," the editor preview displayed a black-haired girl in a sleek one-piece swimsuit adorned with glowing blue lines. She was shorter than me, but her neutral expression somehow looked smug.
"Why does she look so smug? This is editor mode, her face should be neutral" I muttered, facepalming.
"Guess I'll name her Shark-class, after that kusogaki V-tuber from my previous life," I decided, typing in the name field.
Still, I need a Wisdom Cube Factory? I'm going to assume all Kansen need Wisdom Cubes then," I muttered, sighing as the nanoswarm pinged me to report the completion of the construction. I willed the system to connect the cable to the nearby ore derrick so I could verify how much they produced per cycle—and time it down to the second.
A few moments later
"So, 2,000 credits every 10 seconds…" I murmured, doing the math in my head. "If not for my faction's cost multiplier, I'd call this hacking. But considering how high the cost of each unit and building is, I guess it's justified." I managed a tired smile, then moved to place a sensor tower. The area was already powered by the reactor I had just finished building, so I turned my attention to the missile turret, using sonar to examine it.
I didn't have lights on yet, but I was already accustomed to relying on sonar to "see." It felt oddly natural. As I summon my rigging, I swung a leg over the seat of my submarine bike and grabbed the handlebars, hovering just above the ocean's surface.
"Once the sensor tower is done, I'll set up the perimeter. At least these sensors have built-in power generation," I said, trying to keep myself focused. My mind, however, wandered back to the headache-inducing Wisdom Cube Factory.
To explain what I'd designed yesterday: synthesizing Wisdom Cubes required a vast amount of energy and data. My solution? Four nuclear reactors and four Union Cores. The result? One Wisdom Cube every five days.
"Not nearly enough," I muttered, tapping my fingers on the console. "One Kansen requires one Wisdom Cube, and I'm going to need to mass-produce them."
After thinking for a moment, I made a decision. "Let's octuple everything." I sighed. "This is going to be another massive building." I glanced at the blueprint. "I'll make a standalone version once the one at the main base is complete." With that, I input the adjustments: 32 nuclear reactors and 32 Union Cores.
"One cube every day… doable, for now, until I get that research lab operational. Then I can figure out something more efficient," I muttered as I hit the "Generate" command.
The nanoswarm pinged me again—the sensor tower was complete. I willed my rigging to move forward, heading south to another ore derrick. I planned to set up a forward base there and create a sensor grid with towers placed every 500 meters along the eastern line while I heading there.

"Okay… not bad." I nodded. "First support power for the Wargirls' faction." A soft smile crossed my face. "I really don't want to lose anyone, so this should help. I'm sure losses are going to happen eventually…" My voice trailed off as I examined the 3D render of the Wisdom Cube Factory. Meanwhile, my submarine cruised at a steady 30 knots toward the southern ore deposit, where I was already building two more sensor towers along the route.
The factory's design resembled a massive rectangular box, stretching 400 meters long, 200 meters wide, and 200 meters tall.
"Good thing I'm building this underground," I murmured, marveling at its sheer size. "Compared to other tech-access buildings, this thing is enormous. But what's with that power drain?" I frowned. "It already has 32 nuclear reactors. Shouldn't it at least break even?"
Doing a quick mental calculation, I sighed again. "I'll need a full stack of reactors—five buildings—just to keep this behemoth running."
Shaking my head, I connected to the home base's voice chat. Tama and Pama were already online, likely back at the base.
("Hey, girls,") I called out.
("Yes, Creator? What do you need?") Terra's professional tone responded immediately.
("I just sent back a blueprint for the Wisdom Cube Factory and Supply depot. Build more reactors and Supply depot in the base first, then start building Wisdom Cube Factory in the excavation zone.")
("Affirmative.") Terra's reply was curt and efficient.
("I'll be back after visiting the southern ore deposit and setting up another forward base,") I said as I returned my focus to the task at hand. Another sensor tower completed. Progress was steady.
Ten minutes later
I arrived at the southern ore deposit. My sonar picked up completed ore derricks. A UMHU unit and Engineer unit waiting for me. One of them waved enthusiastically as I brought my submarine to a stop and dismissed my rigging.
"Hello~" I greeted, waving back with a smile.
"Greetings, Master. I'm UMHU Unit 'Helena,'" one of the units said, her tone teasing.
'Not one of those girls,' I thought to myself with a sigh. Helena's demeanor was… something I'd need to get used to.
"I'm Engineer Unit 'Alya,' Master," the other introduced herself with a polite bow. Her deployer box, a large container attached to her back, moved in sync with her. Formal, precise—a stark contrast to Helena.
I nodded, offering a friendly smile. "Nice to meet you both. You can call me Aqua." Pausing, I added, "I'm going to build a few more structures here before heading back to base. You're welcome to hitch a ride with me, or you can head home ahead of me."
"I'll wait for you, Aqua-chan~," Helena cooed as she suddenly wrapped her arms around me in a soft hug.
"You're so small and cute!" she squealed. Her harpoon railgun shifted to her side, and her six harpoons—with their depleted uranium tips—rattled slightly on her back.
My brain short-circuited. Unable to react, I stood frozen, unsure if hugging her back would risk accidentally impaling myself.
Alya stepped in, firmly pulling Helena away. "I apologize for her behavior, Master," she said, maintaining her formal tone.
Helena pouted. "Hey! She loved it! Look at her face!"
I sighed in exasperation, my cheeks burning. Desperate for a distraction, I brought up the designer app and began brainstorming.
We already had a supply depot for resource expansion, so what we needed now was long-distance resource transport. "A cargo hauler should work," I muttered. Most factions relied on harvesters for their forward bases, but I wanted something versatile and cost-effective—something cheaper than Hestia-class vessels.
After some thought, I started sketching the design: quad thrusters, a 120-meter-long hull, four PD turrets, four nuclear fusion reactors, and two deployers for resource transfer. It would need plenty of cargo space and a Union Core. As I finalized the specs, I hesitated.
"Wait… wasn't I trying to make this cheap? Why does it feel expensive?" Despite my doubts, I hit the "Generate" command.

"Can't really escape the wisdom cube factory, huh?" I muttered, my voice low as I examined the 3D render in front of me. The display showcased a girl with shoulder-length black hair and a calm, collected expression. Her rigging was strikingly similar to mine—a submarine—but with notable differences.
Her submarine had a spacious compartment at the bottom reminiscent of a sci-fi cargo hauler or a modular dropship. It was clear that the cargo section could detach seamlessly. I counted 16 slots, though I had to double-check. Surrounding her submarine bike rigging were four point-defense turret stations—two near the front on either side, and two more toward the rear. Compact yet formidable. She was about the same height as the UMHU unit.
"Is that a new friend we're going to meet soon?" Helena's voice startled me slightly. I turned to see her peeking over my shoulder, her face filled with curiosity.
I hadn't noticed how engrossed I'd become in analyzing the design. Alya, equally intrigued, leaned in from the other side, her quiet gaze inspecting the render closely.
"Yeah... soonish," I replied, glancing between the two of them. "Once we finish constructing the wisdom cube factory." as I just type in what come to my mind first 'Breaker' class Cargo hauler.
I shifted my attention to Helena, who looked excited as usual, and Alya, who seemed more composed but just as interested. That's when it hit me—construction on the factory was already finished. I had been so absorbed in designing the new design that I hadn't noticed.
Summoning my rigging with a thought, I felt the hum of its systems coming online. The Ore Derrick station in the distance, waiting for the connection. I will my nanoswarm to connect the cable from the derrick to the supply depot.
"Forgive me if this feels a little strange," I said, my tone apologetic as Helena stepped closer to the submarine-like structure of my rigging. "I'm not entirely sure how the converter works yet, so it might be... weird."
Helena didn't seem to mind. Instead, she grinned mischievously and touch my submarine rigging, disappearing almost instantly.
"Ahhh! I'm the first one inside, Master!" her voice echoed from within my rigging, loud and triumphant.
I sighed deeply, already feeling a headache coming on as my cheek burning. Alya, standing beside me, sighed as well, clearly piecing together Helena's antics from my reaction alone. Without hesitation, Alya stepped forward and entered my rigging, vanishing just as Helena had.
"At least she's calmer about it," I muttered under my breath, shaking my head.
The faint buzz of activity from the newly completed Ores derricks running in the background. As everything was progressing, step by step. With Helena and Alya settled inside, I turned my focus back to the task at hand.
I will my rigging to move, and I directed myself westward. This time, I veered slightly off my direct route to the base, planning to set up sensor towers along the western flank of our base. It was an unprotected area, and leaving it vulnerable didn't sit well with me...
