Chapter 4: Chapter 4: Talk with Father
Hezel went into his house and after washing and changing robes he went to where the 3rd Elder worked.
He knocked.
"Enter"
He opened the door and saw his father with his head down writing something on a scroll. He was sitting in seiza on a pillow, in front of him a low table with a bunch of documents.
Hezel sat in seiza on a pillow and waited. After a few minutes, his father put down the brush and asked. "Hezel. What are you doing here? Don't you usually train until dusk?"
"Father, I came because today I opened the byakugan and I am ready for the next part of my training."
"What?!" Henji shouted while jumping on his feet. Then he coughed, embarrassed for his earlier outburst. "I never heard of a child opening his byakugan so early. Let me see."
Hezel concentrated and the veins around his eyes bulged as he activated the byakugan.
(Henji): "Good, good. If that is the case I will go to the Clan Patriarch and ask him for the materials for the next part of your training. You will also start learning from me about the regulations, traditions, and duties that you will inherit when you become the new 3rd Elder."
(Hezel): "Actually…"
(Henji): "What?"
(Hezel): "I hoped to actually concentrate on my martial training"
(Henji): "You don't want the position of 3rd Elder? And you want to only concentrate on fighting? Do you understand what are you saying?!"
(Hezel): "I do."
(Henji): "You will be branded and expelled to the branch house!"
(Hezel) "Not necessarily. If I can make enough contributions to the clan."
(Henji): "And how do you expect to do that?!"
(Hezel): "Not now. The Patriarch's wife has just become pregnant so I still have 3 years and a half to show my worth. To do so I just ask you to give me the pass to the clan library."
(Henji): *Sigh* "'Just', you say? Do you know that the access can be given only by the Patriarch? Besides, why are you even doing this? And don't say that is because you don't want to be Clan Elder or that you want more time to train. We both know that with your brain you could learn all that is needed to succeed me with little effort."
(Hezel): "It's for the happiness of my sister. I won't allow her to be branded."
(Henji): "We can just have her marry one of the firstborn children of the other elders. No need to go to this length."
(Hezel): "I won't allow her to marry someone she has no feelings for."
(Henji): "You little… Fine. I will convince the Patriarch. But if you fail to make some contributions in 3 years you will have to start your training to succeed me and your sister will be married off. This is my bottom line"
(Hezel): "Fine. Thank you, father."
After exiting his father's study, Hezel couldn't help pumping up his fist in a sign of victory. After calming down he gazed at the sky: it was already evening. He walked down the street and entered his house. He entered his sister's room and looking at her sleeping face he said: "Don't worry sister, I won't allow anything to happen to you."
