Chapter 9: Named Monsters (4)
Specimen 2946 continued shuddering and watched in silence as the next Homunculus was bestowed upon a name.
"... From hence forth, thou shalt be known as Sylas."
Uwong!
That was the name given to a golden-eyed Homonculus with soft features, one would easily mistake him for a female. He bowed deeply before the Kraken Spawn and graciously accepted his new name.
[Things have been going too well for me...]
[... First of all, I easily awakened to Mana when it should have honestly taken more than one try...]
[I mean, that could be excused by my Mana Sensitivity skill or the fact that I was in the heat of the moment, fighting for my life.]
As specimen 2946 mused, Charymos moved on to the next Homunculus, his grey lips distorted by a slimy smirk, reflecting that he was pleased with how well the naming process was going.
"... Thou shalt be known as, Draven."
Uwong!
He named his next Homunculus, which was also a male, with pale-white skin and hair as white as snow just like the rest of them.
But unlike the others, this Homonculus had one distinct feature: he did not have bright eyes, and instead, had pitch-black eyes which rivaled the dark of night.
[... Secondly, I gained way too much Exp for doing something as simple as manifesting Mana...]
[If this world is anything like the game that I set...]
A deep scowl formed on Specimen 2946's brow, forcing him to shut his cherry blossom-pink eyes as Charymos moved on to the next specimen.
"...Ivar."
Uwong!
That name was bestowed to a Homunculus that seemed to tower above all the rest. All of them appeared to be around the age of nine or ten, but Ivar, despite being from the same generation, boasted a frame that suggested he was about two or three years older than them.
He too had bright eyes, with a color resembling a vibrant hazel or a bright orange, like the last light of dusk.
[... Then the same mechanics of the game should apply to this reality.]
[Damnit...]
Specimen 2946 kept his eyes shut as he heard Charymos's approaching footsteps, he dreaded every single second that, to him, seemed to drag for an eternity.
[I am one person who is obsessed with realism when it comes to virtual games.]
[And I poured that obsession into the making of Bloodbound Ascension.]
He paused briefly and took a deep breath, as the one who created this world and its mechanics, he couldn't help but feel anxious.
[The problem here is that my luck is stat is at zero!]
[It's not that I have bad luck, I literally have no luck at all and things have been going so well for me?!]
[... It's obvious that I've been stacking up karma... Damnit, should I just run away?]
As if responding to his internal struggle, his legs twitched and coiled, ready to aid in his escape, and Mana flooded his Mana Veins.
As this was happening...
Tap...
... The crimson-eyed female Homunculus placed her cold hand on his, as though offering him comfort.
[... Why is she so cold?]
His curiosity distracted him from his anxiety, and thus, gave a brief moment of relief, but...
[...]
He glanced up at Charymos who loomed over the girl who was looking at him with her soulless gaze.
Specimen 2946 turned his eyes from Charymos and at the girl's, and strangely enough, her lifeless eyes gave him hope.
[...Maybe I'm overthinking this?]
[I mean sure, things have been going well for me and I've been getting power ups even though I have no luck.]
Specimen 2946 mused and considered many things.
For example, what made him fear being named was the fact that he would get a boost in his overall strength for the third time.
Which is quite fortunate no?
And he also considered his vessel, whether or not it was worthy of receiving a name.
He glanced at the four who had already received names, and when compared to him?
[My vessel is better...]
His breathing and heartbeat became steady, the scowl on his brow gradually fading.
"Fuuu..."
He exhaled all the anxiety out of his body, and his lips couldn't help but be etched by a smirk, he was now excited about the strength he would soon gain.
"... From hence forth, thou shalt be known as..."
"...Veylith."
Uwong!
That was the name given to the crimson-eyed gir —
Crackle!
[!!]
As soon as she received her name and the volume of her Mana Pool was increased, Veylith's frame instantly erupted in an azure-blue plasma — Mana.
"Oya~ To think you would also manifest."
Charymos stuck out his black, forked tongue, his eyes gleaming with satisfaction.
But...
[Oh?]
... That was not the only change that occured, the tips of Veylith's long, snow-white hair became frosted in crimson, as though they'd been dipped in blood.
[Huh?... She's already awakening to one of her racial traits?!]
[Marvelous! Absolutely marvelous!!]
"Ah~"
"The twentieth generation!!!!"
"Hahahaha!!!"
Charymos couldn't contain his emotions and began twirling and fidgeting as though a colony of wasps was crawling inside of his skin.
But what excited him more than the other four and Veylith was...
[Specimen 2946... I wonder what you'll show me this time? What will you become~?]
As Veylith's Mana fizzled away, Charymos approached Specimen 2946 and stretched out his webbed hand.
"Come here..."
[...My most prized possession.]
At his order, Specimen 2946 stretched his neck and offered his cranium to the Kraken Spawn.
Ba —Dump!
Their heartbeats seemed to synchronize as they shared an excitement of the same frequency, Charymos's viscous slime dripping down from Specimen 2946's scalp to his forehead.
"Your name is..."
Charymos was so excited that he even disregarded the ceremonial chant, the bright pink eyes that looked up at him expectantly from the cracks of his fingers, further enhancing his excitement.
[You better give me a good name!!]
"... Kaelen."
UWOOOONG!!!
[!!]
[Urgh! Why did so much Mana leave my body?!]
Charymos winced, the power that left his body was easily three times more than what he had intended.
[No! His body will overload at this rate, I have to —]
Crackle!!
A plasma more vibrant than a Sakura blossom erupted from Specimen 2946's frame and burned like a raging inferno.
"Aaargh!!"
Specimen 2946's bellow echoed throughout the coliseum, he felt like his life force was being sucked by a straw.
[What the hell is going on?!]
The words that failed to escape his lips due to he constant scream, echoed in his mind and his pain intensified exponentially.
Ding!
A status notification window resounded with his cries, but before he could read it...
Booom!!
"AAAAH!!!"
... His limbs exploded, and he was reduced to nothing but a torso floating within the pink energy.
[Impossible! His vessel is not worthy?!]
Charymos's excitement faded into nothing and his expression was that of pure dread, his hand still wrapped around Specimen 2946's cranium.
[!!]
[No... That's not it.]
Upon closer inspection, Charymos noticed that his initial deduction was inaccurate.
[His body... It's rejecting my Mana?!]
"How can that be?! A mere Homonculus rejecting MY Mana?!"
He shouted, and his dread turned into frustration.
How dare a creature that he created with his own two hands reject him?
Charymos gnashed his teeth and refused to relinquish his grip on the Homunculus that was writhing in pain and screaming in agony.
Clink... Clink...
"Let... Let him go..."
Veylith slowly unwrapped her chain, its sickle dangling by her ankle.
She couldn't understand the emotion that she felt, but her body was acting upon it nonetheless, and she felt torn between two powerful forces, causing her bones to creak and her movements to stiffen as though someone had poured cement into her joints.
But, eventually... One of the two powerful forces won over her body and...
Ta! Ta! Ta!
She lunged at Charymos, her chain taut and the sharp sickle whistling behind her like the tail of a Basilisk.
But...
Ta! Ta! Ta! Ta!
Four figures rapidly caught up to her, each of them with their weapons drawn.
Clang! Clang! Clang! Clang!
She parried their attacks, and they immediately stood between her and Charymos.
"Veylith... You would dare attack our master?"
Spoke Thyra, his sword glistening as the others circled Veylith.
"Stand down, Veylith. Or we will kill you."
Ivar chimed in, his towering frame casting a shadow over hers.
"... Hurting him... Let him go."
She ignored them and spun her chain overhead, her crimson eyes reflecting Specimen 2946's writhing frame, his screams of agony piercing her ears like needles.
[Damnit! Why isn't this bastard letting me go?!]
He coughed out blood and it instantly vaporized within his pink Mana as he forced his eyes open.
[Let me go!!]
That plea resounded in his mind, and he glared at the Kraken Spawn who appeared to be livid.
Ding!
Ding!
His status window demanded his attention and he turned his pain-filled gaze to his interface.

"AAAARGHH!!!"
Specimen 2946 felt his blood swell to his head, and from that, he knew that it would soon explode just like his limbs.
[Yes!! He's killing me!]
Ding!
[!!]
Charymos felt the rejection of his Mana suddenly grow exponentially, and a strange power suddenly building up within the Homunculus in his grasp.
"How dare you reject me?!"
"Specimen 2946?!!"
BOOOOOM!!!
[!!]
An explosion that left a deep crater on the Amphitheater ground sent Charymos flying and crashing into the distance.
Thud...
Specimen 2946 fell into the center of the gaping hole, his body scorched to char.
"Huff... Huff..."
Ding!

UWOOOOOOOOOOOOONG!!
A bright pink pillar of energy that threatened to pierce through to the first floor of the tower erupted, widening the crater.
