Chapter 17: Luna Unleashed
In the absence of Maxius, Rias's life unfolded similarly to the original story, but with one significant change: the presence of Luna. This mysterious girl, who had accompanied Rias from the Underworld, enrolled at Kuoh Academy and quickly integrated into Rias's peerage. While Rias continued her duties as the president of the Occult Research Club, her mind was often preoccupied with the burdens of her past, particularly her broken engagement with Riser. One peculiar habit she developed was wearing a crimson and black ring with gold engravings of a cat screaming on her finger, frequently seen absentmindedly rubbing it while staring at the sky, lost in thought about her brother Maxius and what his absence meant for her future.
A few months ago, Rias successfully annulled her engagement with Riser, thanks to the efforts of her new pawn, the perverted Red Dragon Emperor, Issei Hyoudou. Now, she shares a residence with Issei and her Bishop, Asia Argento. Recently, the peace at Kuoh Academy was disturbed when two agents of the Church, Irina and Xenovia, arrived to hunt down the rogue priest Freed and the scientist Valper Galilei, who had stolen three of the seven pieces of Excalibur. Upon learning this, Rias agreed to cooperate with the Church agents, but Kiba, driven by his traumatic past as a test subject in a holy sword experiment, went rogue, seeking revenge against Freed.
Eventually, they discovered that Kokabiel, one of the cadre of fallen angels, was orchestrating the chaos behind the scenes. His motives were clear—to incite a new war between the factions. As tensions grew, Kiba, who had been tormented by memories of his past in the Church's experiments, managed to harness his grief and rage to awaken his Balance Breaker, the Holy Demonic Sword, ultimately defeating the rogue priest Freed. However, the victory was short-lived, as Kokabiel took the opportunity to further escalate the situation by murdering Valper in cold blood and openly declaring his intent to fight Rias and her peerage, challenging their strength and resolve in a bid to provoke an all-out conflict among the supernatural forces.
"Hahaha! You fools still resist, even after losing your master?" Kokabiel taunted, his voice cutting through the tension like a blade. The battlefield seemed to still for a moment, each word dripping with condescension and arrogance. His eyes, gleaming with malevolence, scanned the group—Rias, her peerage, and the two Church agents, Irina and Xenovia—as if they were nothing more than pawns in a game he had already won. A cruel smirk played on his lips, the joy of sowing chaos evident in his expression.
"Is this all the famed Gremory peerage can muster?" he continued mockingly. "You cling to a hope that is destined to crumble, oblivious to the inevitable truth." Kokabiel raised his hand, conjuring a glowing blade of light that pulsed with raw, destructive energy. The atmosphere grew heavier as the tension thickened, each member of Rias's peerage bracing themselves for the coming clash. To Kokabiel, they were nothing more than obstacles—insignificant, yet irritating enough to warrant his attention, if only briefly.
"You cling to hope, yet it will shatter before you," he sneered, raising his hand to conjure another blade of light, its glow reflecting his malicious intent. The tension in the air grew palpable, each member of Rias's peerage steeling themselves for what was to come. Kokabiel's taunts weren't just words; they were calculated barbs meant to erode their resolve.
"What are you saying?" Rias demanded.
"Hahaha! I might as well tell you. I'm starting a war—God is dead! He perished long ago during the brutal war against the Four Devil Kings." Kokabiel's words hung in the air like a death knell, his tone dripping with derision.
He reveled in the shocked expressions of Rias's peerage, savoring their disbelief. The silence that followed was broken only by the faint sound of the wind, as if the world itself recoiled at the weight of the revelation. Luna, however, remained impassive, her bored expression betraying no emotion, while Asia collapsed from the overwhelming shock.
"The higher-ups of all factions hid this truth to maintain order, to keep humans clinging to their fragile faith," Kokabiel continued with a sneer. "They fear what would happen if the world knew… knew that the god they worship is no more."
As despair began to set in, Issei, determined to protect Rias, raised his gauntlet, the crimson glow of the Boosted Gear intensifying with each pulse. He took a step forward, his eyes burning with resolve as he declared, "I don't care about any of that! My dream is to become a Harem King!" His voice, filled with determination, echoed across the battlefield, momentarily breaking the oppressive tension.
Despite the absurdity of his declaration, Issei's unwavering spirit ignited a spark of hope among his comrades. Rias, taken aback by his sheer audacity, felt a flicker of reassurance. Even Kiba, who had remained tense and silent, allowed himself a brief, amused smirk.
"I bet he thinks that sounds cool." Kiba quipped under his breath, shaking his head but standing taller, as if Issei's resolve had bolstered his own.
Kokabiel offered, "If that's all you desire, Red Dragon Emperor, join me, and I'll grant you all the women you could ever want." His voice was low and taunting, dripping with malicious amusement. He took a step forward, his wings spreading wide, casting long shadows across the battlefield. "Think about it," he added, his smirk widening. "Why waste your time defending those who would use you as a shield when I can give you a life of pleasure and indulgence?"
Kokabiel's words seemed to hang in the air, each one calculated to exploit Issei's well-known desires and sway his resolve. For a brief moment, the tension grew heavier, as if Kokabiel's proposition had taken root. All eyes turned toward Issei, waiting to see his response.
Before Issei could respond, Rias promised, "If you defeat Kokabiel, I'll let you touch my breasts." This promise ignited Issei's resolve, and he began charging his Boosted Gear with renewed energy.
Just as Issei prepared to charge at Kokabiel, a voice interrupted from above. "Hey, cockroach, look up—panties!"
Distracted, Issei looked up to see pink-striped panties descending toward him. His perverted expression and nosebleed were short-lived as a small foot struck his face, sending him flying. Everyone on the battlefield was shocked.
"Luna, why did you attack Issei?" Rias asked, bewildered, her voice laced with confusion and concern. The sudden, unexpected assault had caught everyone off guard, and Rias struggled to understand Luna's motives. Standing amidst the stunned silence, Luna appeared completely unfazed, as if her actions required no further explanation. Her demeanor was calm, yet there was a distinct sense of authority emanating from her, leaving those present wondering if there was more to this enigmatic girl than they had realized.
"One, because he's a disgusting pervert. Two, he's too weak to fight Kokabiel. And three, I finally have permission to go all out," Luna answered with a smile.
"Permission?" everyone echoed in confusion, except for Akeno and Rias, who exchanged worried glances.
Akeno whispered, "Rias, do you think he's here right now?"
"I don't know," Rias replied, hopeful.
Kokabiel sneered, "Hahaha! What can a little girl like you do to me?"
Luna grinned, her expression filled with a mix of excitement and menace. "Oh, just watch as this little girl plucks your feathers, you dirty crow," she said, her voice calm yet carrying an undertone of deadly seriousness. Her silver hair shimmered in the dim light before beginning to shift hues, transforming into a deep reddish-brown. A crimson aura flared around her, pulsing intensely and affecting the gravity in her vicinity. The ground beneath her cracked slightly under the sudden increase in gravitational force, while small fragments of debris around her started to levitate briefly before falling back. The sheer confidence in her words sent a chill through the air, making even her allies pause in awe. Despite Kokabiel's derisive sneer, there was a flicker of hesitation in his eyes, as though he sensed the danger lurking beneath her now reddish-brown hair and ominous red glow.
Angered, Kokabiel charged at Luna with dual light swords, but before he could land a strike, Luna raised her hand, and a black sphere materialized, pulsating with ominous energy. As the sphere hovered for a brief moment, the gravity around it began to distort, pulling debris and fragments of the battlefield toward its core. With a flick of her wrist, the sphere shot out with blinding speed, striking Kokabiel in the chest and sending him hurtling into a nearby building. Upon impact, the black sphere expanded rapidly, releasing a gravitational surge that warped the surrounding space and crushed everything within its radius, leaving behind a massive crater before finally dissipating into the air.
Minutes later, Kokabiel emerged from the rubble, bloodied and torn, his wings tattered and his breathing ragged. Despite his battered state, a twisted grin spread across his face as he wiped the blood trickling from his mouth. "I underestimated you, devil mongrel. But don't think you can look down on me, a fallen angel born to end your kind." He raised his hand, conjuring a massive golden lance surrounded by swirling purple rings of energy. The lance crackled with immense power, distorting the air around it. "Prepare to die, filth," he sneered, his voice laced with both fury and desperation. The ground beneath him trembled from the weight of the gathered energy, creating cracks that radiated outward as he prepared to strike again.
Before he could finish, Luna's black-clad fist, imbued with the immense gravitational force of her earth flame, struck Kokabiel's face with such devastating power that he was sent flying through the air. The impact generated a shockwave so intense that it cratered the ground beneath her, sending cracks spidering outward in all directions. Kokabiel skidded across the ground for several meters, his body plowing through debris and rubble before coming to a stop. His face was bloodied, disfigured by the sheer force of Luna's blow, and he struggled to rise, groaning in pain as he felt the crushing weight of lingering gravitational pressure pressing down on him.
"You talk too much. I have dinner to prepare for Mrs. Hyoudou, so I can't waste time indulging you," Luna said nonchalantly, her voice steady and unyielding. Despite the casual tone, there was an undeniable weight to her words, a quiet menace that made even the most hardened fighters pause. As she spoke, the gravitational field around her subtly fluctuated, causing small fragments of debris to float momentarily before crashing back to the ground. The display was brief but powerful, serving as a silent reminder of the overwhelming force she commanded. Kokabiel, still struggling to rise, could do nothing but glare at her, the realization of his imminent defeat settling heavily on his battered form.
"I had no idea Luna was this strong," Kiba muttered.
"Me neither," Akeno added.
"I thought she was just a maid," Rias said, astonished.
Issei, sweating bullets, exclaimed, "Oh no, I need to watch how I act around Luna, or that might be me one day!" His eyes darted nervously between Luna and the crater left behind from her attack, the sheer destruction she caused still fresh in his mind. The thought of provoking someone with such overwhelming power sent shivers down his spine. "She's like a walking apocalypse!" he muttered under his breath, his usual bravado replaced by genuine fear. Even his Boosted Gear seemed to hum in agreement, as if advising caution. Despite the gravity of the situation, a few of his comrades couldn't help but chuckle at Issei's exaggerated but understandable reaction.
As Kokabiel struggled to stand, he cursed, "Wretched filth…"
"Time to end this," Luna declared, advancing toward him.
"I can't let that happen," came a voice from above as a bright blue light descended, shattering the barrier with a resounding crash. All eyes turned skyward as the light solidified into the form of a warrior clad in gleaming white armor, intricate patterns etched across its surface, reflecting the dim battlefield glow. The armor's centerpiece was a radiant blue jewel embedded in the chest, pulsing with energy, giving the figure an ethereal presence. As the light dimmed, the figure hovered just above the ground, his wings of pure energy spreading wide, exuding an aura of immense power.
"The White Dragon Emperor," Rias murmured, her voice barely above a whisper, a mixture of relief and tension evident in her tone. The air grew heavy once again, but this time, it was due to the palpable energy radiating from the newcomer, whose gaze locked onto Kokabiel with cold precision.
"Azazel must have sent you," Kokabiel spat, coughing up blood.
The White Dragon Emperor raised his hand, and Kokabiel's gathered light vanished instantly. "Divide, divide, divide…" Each utterance of the word caused the golden lance in Kokabiel's grasp to shrink and dim, its once immense power dissipating into nothingness. Kokabiel staggered backward, gasping in disbelief as the weight of his diminished strength bore down on him.
"What… what's happening? My power… it's gone!" he rasped, clutching his chest as if willing his strength to return. The once-proud fallen angel now looked fragile, the aura of invincibility he had exuded moments ago shattered completely.
"That's the White Dragon Emperor's ability," Rias explained in a hushed tone. "He doesn't just halve power—he absorbs it, rendering his opponents weaker with each divide." Her eyes flickered with both awe and relief as the tide of battle shifted decisively in their favor.
With Kokabiel reduced to the strength of a low-level fallen angel, the White Dragon Emperor prepared to leave. He walked forward with a calm but commanding presence, the light from his armor casting long shadows across the battlefield. "I'll be taking Kokabiel and Freed with me. They have much to answer for," he said coldly, his voice carrying an air of finality. Before departing, he turned his attention to Luna, his eyes narrowing slightly as if measuring her strength.
"If I didn't have a mission to complete, I would have liked to fight you," he added, a hint of respect evident in his tone. "There aren't many who can wield such power with ease." The tension in the air remained thick, but Luna simply met his gaze with a serene confidence, offering him a faint nod.
Without another word, the White Dragon Emperor extended his wings of light, lifting off into the sky with Kokabiel and Freed in tow. The battlefield fell silent once more, the oppressive aura finally lifting as he vanished into the night.
Turning away, he vanished into the sky.
Later that night, in the quiet confines of the Occult Research Club, the atmosphere was heavy with unspoken thoughts. Rias sat at her ornate wooden desk, her fingers absently running through the soft fur of a red and black cat that lay sprawled comfortably on the surface. The rhythmic motion seemed to provide her a small measure of comfort amidst the swirling questions in her mind. Beside her stood Akeno, ever composed, though a hint of concern flickered in her eyes as she watched Rias closely. Luna stood before them, her posture stiff, a guilty expression etched across her face as though she carried the weight of unspoken secrets. The room was dimly lit, the glow of a single lamp casting long shadows on the walls, adding to the somber mood that enveloped them.
"Tell me, Luna… was it my brother you were talking about?" Rias asked, her voice trembling slightly. Though she tried to maintain her usual composed demeanor, a hint of vulnerability seeped through, betraying her concern. The room grew even quieter as Akeno and Luna watched her closely, understanding the weight behind the question. Rias's fingers, which had been stroking the red and black cat on her desk, paused mid-motion, revealing how much the answer mattered to her. Even the cat seemed to sense the tension, nuzzling her hand gently as if offering comfort.
"Yes, young lady," Luna confirmed.
"Was he watching us fight Kokabiel?" Rias's voice was filled with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension. The question hung in the air, and for a moment, it seemed as if time itself had paused. Akeno shifted slightly, her expression unreadable, but her eyes betrayed a hint of concern. Luna remained silent for a moment longer, as if carefully considering how to respond, before finally meeting Rias's gaze.
"No, young lady. The young master was not present. However, he foresaw potential threats and left me with standing orders to ensure your safety at all costs, which granted me the authority to release my power seal when necessary. Without his direct presence, I had to assess the situation on my own and act accordingly."
"Seal?" Rias echoed, confused.
"Yes. Each of us androids is equipped with a power-limiting seal, an advanced mechanism designed to regulate our immense energy output. This seal can only be released under specific, critical conditions or by the young master's direct command. The purpose of the seal is twofold: to prevent unnecessary destruction during minor conflicts and to ensure that we only unleash our full potential when the situation truly demands it. Without this restriction, the sheer magnitude of our abilities could cause significant collateral damage."
"Then why didn't you help during the Riser situation?" Rias asked, her tone a mix of curiosity and frustration. The memory of that difficult time still weighed on her, and she couldn't help but wonder why Luna, with all her evident power, had remained on the sidelines. To Rias, it had been a grueling ordeal where every ally counted, and Luna's lack of involvement had puzzled her ever since. Her question carried not just a desire for answers, but a need to understand the limits of the trust she placed in those around her.
"Master believed that if I intervened, it would hinder your personal growth and development. He wanted you to become stronger by overcoming challenges on your own, without relying on external help. Additionally, Grafyia was closely monitoring my actions to ensure that I adhered to these orders and didn't interfere, even if I wanted to. The young master's vision was clear—you needed to face adversity directly to reach your full potential."
"So… my brother still hasn't come back?" Rias asked, her voice filled with longing, tinged with a quiet sadness that she could no longer hide. Her hand continued to stroke the soft fur of Azuki, who, sensing her distress, purred softly and nuzzled closer against her palm, offering silent comfort. Akeno watched her friend with a look of quiet sympathy, understanding how deeply Rias missed her brother. The room felt heavier with the weight of her unspoken emotions, each second of silence amplifying the longing in her words.
"Don't be sad, young lady. I do have a message from the young master," Luna said, trying to ease her worries.
"You do?" Rias asked eagerly.
"Yes. He said he will be coming home this summer."
