Volume 3 Chapter 17
The disadvantage of being outnumbered was absolute.
Without the ability to strike a fatal blow with each attack, the disadvantage in numbers would quickly become apparent. Moreover, with my reduced capabilities, the gap between the knights and me was not significant.
I had to focus entirely on defense, with chains whirling around me, forming solid iron walls.
The knights used magic to enhance their strength, simultaneously slashing at the chains.
Sparks flew as blades collided with the chains, but the chains remained unshaken.
“…”
The knights seemed surprised, and even I was unaware of the limits of my chains’ durability.
Just to be safe, I continued to reinforce the chains. The knights retreated in unison.
Above, lightning gathered.
A mage was casting a spell, shaping the lightning into a spherical form and dropping it straight down.
The chains, being physical in nature, were targeted to be penetrated by the magical force.
I maneuvered the chains to form an iron ball and moved away from the lightning, but the knights had already surrounded me. During their retreat, they were given buffs against lightning, blocking any direction I tried to escape to.
I could withstand it, but Lily…
Just the crackling sound alone made Lily tremble uncontrollably.
“Hey.”
“?! ”
Someone penetrated the defensive wall.
“No, Nora?”
“The order from Lady Chris. Don’t get it wrong, it’s not that I want to save you.”
Nora, wielding her scythe, covered the inside of the chains with a thin layer of darkness.
“Is that… shadow…?”
When the spherical lightning struck, the shadow cleverly absorbed the current, protecting Lily and me from any harm.
“Idiot, what are you doing? Can’t you use spatial transfer? They can’t disrupt you now, take Lily and escape.”
“…It’s useless.”
I tried to activate spatial transfer, but the coordinates were extremely unstable.
“They might be using 【Chaotic Space】 to disrupt my coordinates… If I forcibly use it, Lily and I have a high chance of being separated, and there’s a risk we might end up in unintended locations.”
Maintaining Chaotic Space requires a lot of magic power, but during its duration, the caster can take potions to speed up recovery. Unless we find the caster and interrupt it, they can sustain it for quite a long time.
“I’ll cover you while you break out…”
Before Nora could finish, several beams of light penetrated her shadow wall. The shadow, already weakened from the lightning, was instantly dispersed by the light.
Water droplets infiltrated the chain gaps.
“Are they planning to drown us?”
“No, they want to—”
They were trying to force me to open the defensive wall. Physically, the chains were difficult to break through directly, so they resorted to magical tricks.
The water droplets solidified into thick ice spikes, spreading inward. The dense spherical defense inadvertently aided the formation of an almost omnidirectional attack.
I covered Lily’s ears and released a vibrating sound wave from my throat, shattering the ice spikes that had penetrated the chains.
“Sorry, Nora, I forgot to warn you in the emergency…”
“It’s okay, it was like a cat’s meow.”
“Huh?”
Nora appeared unfazed by the close-range sonic impact, seemingly unaffected by the blast.
The wind pressure from the sound wave blew away the infiltrating water droplets, and we successfully defended against the attack.
“My 【Shadow Dive】 can’t transport people. It’s troublesome, but there’s no other way than a frontal breakthrough.”
“The barrier only needs to be defended on one side, they just have to guard three sides…”
“That’s why I’m covering you. Your job is to protect Lily, so protect her with the determination of guarding a master. Make an opening for me.”
Nora urged me to act quickly. Their reinforcements would only increase, while we had already committed all our forces at the beginning. It seemed unlikely anyone else would come to our aid.
I bit my lip and did as Nora instructed, creating an opening large enough for her to pass through above.
Nora stepped on the chains and leapt into the air, her elegant figure resembling a gracefully dancing swan. But my focus was on the tiny glimmers of cold light in Nora’s hand.
Needles?
“Now!”
“…!”
Not quite understanding Nora’s plan, I chose to trust her.
I dropped the layers of chain defense, and Nora’s silver needles precisely targeted each knight.
The knights’ armor had strong defenses, and their gaps were magically protected. The silver needles couldn’t penetrate any part of the knights’ armor.
As they saw me drop my defense, intending to prevent my escape, none could move as planned.
—Shadows.
The tiny silver needles landed on the knights’ shadows, vividly outlined due to the illumination magic Morning Star. The needles pinned their shadows to the ground like thumbtacks, rendering the knights immobile.
Some knights quickly realized the principle behind it: 【Shadow Bind】, a restraining
skill that limits the movement of the body by fixing the shadow to an object. But this skill only prevents the shadow or body from leaving the fixed point and does not restrict the body’s freedom. Thus, destroying the fixed object, in this case, Nora’s silver needles, would free them.
“Tempus fugit (Time, hasten your flow)!”
