Chapter 16: Chapter 16: Between the Lines
Rin stood frozen in place, her thoughts a chaotic whirlpool after Ash's abrupt disappearance. The fading sunlight bathed the cobblestone streets in hues of gold and orange, but the beauty of the scene did little to calm her racing mind.
"Aria?" Evelyn's familiar voice broke through the haze.
Rin turned to see Evelyn walking toward her, her hair catching the last rays of sunlight. Concern flickered in her blue eyes as she approached.
"What are you doing out here?" Evelyn asked, her tone a mix of curiosity and worry. "Why are you just standing here alone?"
Rin hesitated. For a moment, she considered telling Evelyn everything—about Ash, his cryptic warning, and the unsettling feeling that had taken root in her chest. But she stopped herself. Something held her back, an instinct that urged her to keep this encounter to herself.
"I was just watching the sunset," Rin said, forcing a small smile. "The city looks so peaceful right now. It's… beautiful."
Evelyn glanced at the horizon, her expression softening. "It is," she agreed. "Moments like this are rare. We should enjoy them when we can."
Rin nodded, grateful that Evelyn didn't press further. "Are you done with your work?"
Evelyn sighed lightly, rolling her shoulders. "Yes, finally. Paperwork is the real enemy, I swear."
Rin chuckled, the tension in her chest easing slightly. "Let's head back, then. I'm starving."
Together, they walked through the quieting streets, the bustle of the guild and the cryptic encounter with Ash fading into the background.
Back at Evelyn's Apartment
The cozy apartment was bathed in the warm glow of light. The two shared a simple but satisfying dinner, chatting about mundane topics that helped Rin push aside the lingering unease. Evelyn's sharp wit and dry humor were a comfort, grounding Rin in the present moment.
After dinner, they retired to their respective rooms. Rin closed the door to her room, locking it with a soft click before leaning against it with a sigh.
"What a hectic day," she muttered, crossing the room to collapse onto the bed.
For a moment, she simply lay there, staring at the ceiling. Then, with a quiet command, she murmured, "Shadow Steps."
From the dark corners of the room, a shadow coalesced and formed into Onyx, the shadowy familiar she had summoned countless times before. Onyx stretched and flicked its tail before curling up on the floor, its glowing eyes watching her intently.
Next, Rin reached into her bag and retrieved Aurelis, her other companion. His blue eyes glow softly in the dim light.
"System," Rin said, her voice firm. "Stop pretending. I know you were listening, and I know you know what I'm about to ask. So, do me the honor and tell me: who was that guy? And what did he mean?"
The room fell into silence.
Rin waited, her patience wearing thin. "Alright, I get it," she said finally, her tone edged with frustration. "You can't tell me. Again. Fine. Show me the Author Rewrite Status window."
The familiar interface materialized before her, its translucent screen displaying the information she had come to rely on.

Rin's eyes scanned the list of characters, her brow furrowing as she searched for any mention of Ash. But his name was nowhere to be found.
"Of course," she muttered. "Not here either."
She sighed, leaning back against the headboard. The system only displayed the images of characters she had already encountered, but without images or detailed descriptions, identifying them by appearance alone was impossible.
After a few moments of pondering, Rin shook her head. "What's the point of thinking about this?" she muttered. "It's not like I can magically get an answer."
She took a deep breath, letting the tension drain from her shoulders.
"It's not the first time this has happened," she mused aloud. Her thoughts drifted back to her first encounter with Lila.

Flashback to Chapter 3-4
It had been late at night, the hospital room cloaked in darkness. Rin had just woken from a restless sleep when the girl appeared at her bedside, her presence quiet but unsettling.
"My name's Lila," the girl had said, her voice steady and calm. "I've been waiting for you since you collapsed."
Rin had blinked, trying to make sense of the situation. "Why…?"
Lila had hesitated, then leaned closer. "Because I think you're important. And… I think you might be able to help me."
"Help you? With what?" Rin had asked, frowning in confusion.
"With the gates," Lila had said, her tone grave. "Something's wrong with them, and you might be the only one who can fix it."
Rin had stared at her, her mind racing. "The gates…"
[4] "Yes," Lila had nodded. "And I think your system knows more than it's letting on."
"We'll meet again," said, her voice steady but tinged with urgency. "Until then, I hope you recover well and stop being so cautious of me. I'm not your enemy. Our goal is the same."
Before Rin could even process that, Lila had added, "You can't trust everyone and everything around you. Be careful next time."

Present
"It's been a month since then," Rin muttered. "And now Ash shows up, just as cryptic as Lila.

Flashback: Encounter with Ash
"I was hoping to speak with you," he said, his voice low and deliberate.
"About what?" I asked, keeping my tone neutral.
"The dungeon," he replied. "And what happened there."
My pulse quickened. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"Don't play coy," he said sharply. "Something happened in that dungeon—something unnatural. You felt it, didn't you?"
I narrowed my eyes. "Who are you?"
"Call me Ash," he said. "That's all you need to know for now."
"And why should I trust you, Ash?"
"You shouldn't," he admitted. "But you're in over your head. Whether you realize it or not, you're part of something much bigger than you think."
His words sent a chill down my spine. "What do you mean?"
Before he could answer, a sharp whistle pierced the air. Ash's gaze snapped to the side, his expression darkening.
"Stay safe, Felstone," he said, retreating into the shadows before I could stop him.

Both of them seem to know more about me, the system, and the gates than I do. What's their purpose? Why won't the system give me answers?"
Her fingers tightened around Onyx as frustration bubbled up inside her.
"The system needs my progress in this world or these dungeons to give me anything useful," she said bitterly. "And these people keep showing up with their riddles and warnings."
She closed her eyes, taking a deep breath to calm herself. "What do I do now?"
The question hung in the air, unanswered.
Rin stirred from her thoughts, the stillness of the room pressing in around her. The soft glow of moonlight spilled through the window, painting the floor in silver. Onyx, her wolf companion, stretched lazily by her bedside, his glowing eyes following her as she sat up. Aurelis, the golden fox, lay curled in her lap, its warmth a quiet comfort against the cool night air.
She rose quietly, careful not to disturb the peace of the moment, and made her way to the balcony. The air outside was crisp and carried the faint scent of blooming night flowers. She leaned against the railing, gazing at the sprawling city below. The moon hung high in the sky, casting its light over the rooftops and cobblestone streets, giving the world a serene, dreamlike quality.
Onyx padded silently to her side, his dark form blending into the shadows. Aurelis nestled against her chest, its soft fur glinting gold in the moonlight. Rin stroked its head absently, her mind churning with thoughts she could no longer suppress.
"I like it or not," she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper, "this world has become my reality for the long run. It's time I accept that fact and move on accordingly."
Her gaze swept over the city, a faint smile tugging at her lips. "This place isn't half bad," she admitted. "Except for the dungeons and gates problem. And that's something I need to solve. Whether I want to or not."
She glanced down at Aurelis, whose glowing blue eyes met hers with quiet understanding. "The system… as frustrating as it is, it's kept me alive. And this ability—being a tamer—it wasn't even part of the original story. The system gave me the option, and now that I have you two…" Her fingers brushed against Onyx's dark fur. "I couldn't have asked for better companions."
The wolf huffed softly, its eyes gleaming with what Rin could only describe as loyalty. She let out a soft laugh, the sound carrying into the quiet night.
"But moving forward," she continued, her tone growing serious, "I need to prepare myself for whatever comes next. First, I need to learn to protect myself. What happened in the last dungeon can't happen again. I have this sneaky suspicion the dungeons aren't going to stay simple—not like I thought they would be."
Her mind drifted back to the chaos of the dungeon, the terror of near-death, and the cryptic words of Ash. She clenched her fist, determination hardening her resolve.
"Second, I need to protect you both," she said, glancing between Onyx and Aurelis. "And to do that, I need to keep your existence hidden. A legendary S-class guide is rare enough as it is, but a tamer? That's practically unheard of. If word gets out, it'll only put us in more danger."
She sighed, her thoughts shifting to the people she'd met so far. "As an S-class guide, I have an advantage, but the risks are just as high. People will want my favor, or they'll try to sabotage me—out of envy, admiration, or something worse. I've seen it all before."
Her voice softened, tinged with a hint of bitterness. "No matter the world, humans are the same. I learned that in my last life, fifteen years of seeing every side of human nature. This place will be no different."
Her thoughts turned to Evelyn, her steadfast companion in this strange world. "But there are exceptions," she admitted. "Evelyn… I wrote her, and after meeting her, I know I can trust her. For now, at least. But I can't drag her into every problem of mine. It's not fair to her."
She took a deep breath, the cool night air filling her lungs. "I need to find a place of my own. Somewhere away from Evelyn. For her safety—and for my priorities. People like Lila and Ash… they're dangerous, and I can't let their presence endanger her."
Rin's gaze lifted to the stars, their light distant but steady. "I have to learn to fight," she said firmly. "If I don't, I'll never survive what's coming. And I have to do it on my own terms. No more relying on luck or hoping someone else will save me."
Aurelis nuzzled her chin, and she smiled faintly, her resolve solidifying. "We'll figure this out," she said softly. "Together."
The night stretched on, quiet and still, but Rin's mind was anything but. The path ahead was uncertain, filled with dangers and mysteries she couldn't yet unravel. But for the first time in a long while, she felt a flicker of hope.
She wasn't alone.
And that, she thought, made all the difference.
