RWBY: Ascent

Chapter 7: A Rose's Visit

---At From Dusk Till Dawn---

"Dang, it's been really slow tonight. Usually at least some people would come in during the night to buy some dust either for appliances or ammo," I said to myself as I sat behind the counter in the middle of the shop.

'Beacon's initiation is about a week off from now. I'm honestly surprised Ruby hasn't shown up yet. I guess Ozpin really was cutting it close before he invited Ruby to Beacon,' I thought to myself. I was really surprised Ozpin made such an abrupt decision.

Right as I thought that though, the door to the shop opened up. I looked upwards and saw a short girl with a red cape walk in. She had her hood up and headphones on. I watched as she walked over to the back side of the store where the weapon magazines were.

'There she is. I guess it's time for the story to really begin.'

About two minutes later some thugs in black suits walked into the store with Roman following behind them. One of them walked up to the counter while the others started going around the store with a gun pulled out.

"Hey you, empty the cash register and pull out all of the dust from the back of the store!"

"Are you robbing this place?"

"What's it look like punk? Obviously! Now hurry up and-"

The moment he said that the one of the other dudes he came in with got sent flying through the store's front window. While he turned the other way to see what happened, I swiftly chopped him on the back of the neck and knocked him out.

I stood up and got ready for a fight. As I walked out from behind the counter, Ruby dashed out of the broken window and went outside towards the sidewalk. I swiftly followed her and jumped out next to her.

"You know, you have to pay for that window."

"Uhhh, I'm sorry about that! I'll definitely pay you back, let me just deal with these guys first," Ruby said with embarrassment filling her voice. She then turned her head back towards Roman and the rest of the thugs who had just walked out of the store behind us.

"Stop right there! You won't get away with trying to rob this place," Ruby shouted out towards the thugs and Roman.

"Well well well, look what we have here. Little red riding hood and the big bad wolf teaming up. Well, what are you guys waiting for? Get them," Roman told his thugs as they all started to advance towards Ruby and I.

Ruby dashed forward with her now unfurled scythe and slashed at two thugs on the right while I stepped forward into the guard of one of the thugs on the left. I quickly batted the arm holding the sword away before elbowing him in the solar plexus. I then crashed the back of my fist against his face to disorient him before sweeping his legs out from under him.

I stomped on his face and launched off him towards the other thug who began firing at me with his gun. I lowered my body and rushed towards him before sliding to his right and grabbing the gun from him. I pulled it out of his hands while spinning around and slamming the heel of my foot across his face at the same time. His body was launched into the side of the wall and left an indent in it.

"You guys were worth every penny. Truly, you were. Well, it's been fun but I have places to be," Roman said with exasperation. He then lifted his cane and shot a dust infused bullet right between Ruby and I.

Ruby launched herself into the air with crescent rose while i simply vanished from view due to my speed and reappeared a few feet behind where Ruby landed. Ruby looked around wondering where Roman went before seeing that he was climbing a ladder to a rooftop.

"Will it be okay to leave these guys here," Ruby asked as she briefly turned towards me.

"Yeah it'll be fine. They're all unconscious. I think we're fine to go after the dude."

With that said, Ruby dashed towards the top of the roof while using her semblance. I followed behind her in a flash of lightning.

As both of us arrived at the top of the rooftop, Ruby pointed crescent rose at Roman.

"Hey!"

"How persistent. Oh well, this is the end of the line red."

Behind Roman a bullhead flew in behind him. Roman quickly hopped on and proceeded to throw a red dust crystal at us. He then shot it with his cane.

Right as the shot landed on the crystal, I blitzed forward in an instant and stretched out my hand. As I did so, a blonde woman with a riding crop in her hand appeared next to me. I formed a shield out of lightning in front of us while the woman constructed a purple barrier as well.

Boom

The explosion rattled the roof for a second. Roman began to laugh in joy but the moment the dust settled he paused. Both the woman and I were standing strong right in front of Ruby, having completely blocked the explosion.

"Well fuck m-"

The woman, who I now recognized as Glynda Goodwitch, swung her riding crop and launched forward a multitude of purple energy blasts while I let loose a volley of lightning strikes towards the bullhead. It got knocked around in the air as Roman almost fell over while in it.

"We've got a huntress here as well!"

Roman then swapped places with the woman driving the bullhead. She stood in the open doorway as Glynda summoned a brief storm above the bullhead and rained down ice spears.

The woman Roman swapped places with in her red dress lifted her hands and stuck them upwards. As she did so, the ground beneath Glynda and I erupted in fire. I quickly grabbed Glynda and dashed backwards, evading the pillars of fire.

Glynda then swiftly manipulated the shards from the explosion and formed them into a spear. I went to the side of it and charged it with lightning. Glynda then launched the spear right at the bullhead. The woman in red quickly blasted it apart with flame bursts.

As she did so, Glynda guided the broken pieces of the spear and surrounded the bullhead with them. At the same time I constructed a bolt of lightning in my hands and launched it straight towards Cinder in the bullhead. I could tell it was her due to her dress and her powers.

Right as Glynda started to manipulate the pieces around the bullhead and my lightning construct rushed towards Cinder, she released a wave of fire from herself, disintegrating the pieces and deflecting my construct upwards. She then waved her arms again and summoned much larger pillars of fire under us on the rooftop once again.

The moment the pillars were about to burn us all, I gathered Ruby in one arm and Glynda in the other before speeding to the front and evading all of the fire. As I put both Glynda and Ruby down, we looked up to see that the bullhead had already pulled off ahead and flew off into the night.

Ruby then quickly turned her head towards Glynda and I.

"Oh my gosh that was so cool! You were like bzzt and she was like woosh and then both of you were like boom! Are you a huntress miss? Could I have your autograph?"

"..."

---An hour later---

Both Ruby and I were sitting at a table in a police precinct as Glynda paced around us with a frown on her face.

"Do you realize how absolutely irresponsible you were tonight? You put yourself and others in danger without any regard. If it was up to me I'd give you a pat on the back,"

Ruby looked up with eager eyes and a hopeful smile on her face.

"And a slap on the wrist!"

Glynda slapped her crop down in front of Ruby's hands as Ruby squeaked and quickly pulled her hand back.

"As for you sir, well your performance was actually quite admirable. You swiftly took care of those thugs and supported me well on the rooftop. However you still shouldn't have been involved in a fight like that," Glynda scolded me while looking straight into my eyes.

"Well, they kinda tried robbing the shop I work at. What else was I supposed to do?"

"Despite that fact, you should've just waited for the authorities and hunters instead of rushing to the rooftop with this girl here. You both should be sent home with punishment. But... someone would like to meet you both."

As soon as she said that a man in a green suit walked in from behind her carrying a coffee mug and a plate of cookies.

"Ruby Rose. And Ryze Prominence. You both have interesting eye colors."

"Ummm, thank you," Ruby responded in a confused tone.

"Now, where did the two of you learn to fight like this?"

"Signal Academy."

"I taught myself."

"I see. So Signal Academy taught you how to use one of the most deadly weapons ever designed miss Rose? I only remember one person ever wielding a scythe like that. A dusty old crow. And you really taught yourself some of the most impressive fighting skills I've seen for someone your age mister Prominence?"

"Yeah, that's my Uncle Qrow! He's a teacher at Signal," Ruby responded with excitement.

"I used to be terrible at fighting but after Uncle Qrow taught me I'm all like hyahh, wachaaa, eeya!"

"I see. And you, mister Prominence?"

"Well I've been wanting to become a hunter, so of course I'd train myself in how to fight. As for being super skilled, well that's just cause I trained hard."

As I said this, Ruby was busy scarfing down the plate of cookies in front of her. Luckily, I managed to snatch a cookie right from Ruby's hand before she could finish eating them all.

"Heyyy! Gimme that!"

"I ain't letting you have all of them."

A small grin appeared on Ozpin's face as he watched the little interaction between us. He leaned forward in his seat and asked us both a question.

"Do you both know who I am."

"You're professor Ozpin. The headmaster of Beacon," both Ruby and I responded at the same time.

"You both want to come to my school?"

"More than anything," Ruby said with stars in her eyes.

"Yeah, I'm down," I said with a knowing smirk on my face.

Ozpin glanced at Glynda briefly who turned away with a small huff. He then turned back towards us with a gentle look in his eyes.

"Well okay."

---An hour later---

"Oh my gosh! I can't believe it! I actually got invited two whole years early to Beacon! This is insane!"

Ruby chattered excitedly as I walked beside her out from the precinct. I turned towards her with a small grin on my face.

"You earned it Ruby. You honestly did pretty good for someone two years younger than me."

"And you! You were so cool Ryze! I couldn't even react to most of the things on the rooftop, but you were fighting and helping the huntress fight that woman from the bullhead. You were so cool! How are you so strong already?"

"Push ups, sit ups, and plenty of juice. That's how Ruby. You just gotta train hard enough. Anyways, I should probably head back home and start packing. Beacon's initiation is only a few days away."

"That's true. Oh! Wait, let me get your number first on my scroll. If... that would be okay with you," Ruby said as her voice dropped to a shy whisper. I guess her social awkwardness was finally acting up.

"No problem. Here you go Ruby," I said as I put my number into her scroll and started to walk off.

"See you at Beacon Ryze!"

"Yeah, see you at Beacon Ruby," I yelled back as I started my trek back to my apartment.
