Chapter 1: Spawnpoint

My name wasn't important, as I was just a normal person living in a small city, in a small apartment. Games were my everything, and I really mean it. I worked hard to be a good gamer, and I was proud of it since I could work as a streamer. I was happy, and working as a streamer was like a dream to me.

I had a very peculiar taste in gaming. Hard games were my thing, and I always enjoyed finishing them. Among the many games that I played in my lifetime, I could proudly say that there wasn't a single game harder than [Doomed Fantasy].

[Doomed Fantasy] was an open-world RPG game that didn't seem like a hard game… Of course, many thought that too and couldn't beat the first missions.

The game came out of nowhere and exploded on many platforms, and many people decided to play the game too. [Doomed Fantasy] was a strange game; although it was an offline game, no one could hack into its code frame. Legend says that the game was coded by a god of programming.

Since I was a hard game addict, I found this game quite enjoyable to play. I decided to work on this game in my streams to earn some money, and it worked. I became famous since I was one of the few people who were good at this game.

I was happy and enjoying the life of being a streamer, my dream job. Everything was perfect… so where did it go wrong?

[ Game Over ]

I was sitting in front of the computer, enjoying my favorite game. I was quiet even though I died in an important section of the game.

"It's alright. At least I found something."

The game was harsh, and I was pretty mad about it, but over time I got used to it and somehow enjoyed it too.

My stomach was making a strange sound that I hadn't heard before. I was hungry, but I didn't find it unlikely. The room was filled with many cans of drinks and fast food.

I stood up to go and buy something when something happened. My eyes were getting blurry, and I couldn't move my body. I was shocked, but my face wasn't showing it. Thud—and then I passed out.

***

"Gasp, cough, cough—where am I?" I said.

I woke up from a strange sleep. I tried to find the source of the light that was shining on my face, as my room was usually dark, but a painful headache distracted me from the light. I rubbed my eyes and looked around. The pain in my head slowly lessened for an unknown reason.

I was in a white room. There wasn't a door or any kind of furniture in that room. It was just pure white.

"It seems like I have a new guest. It's been a long time," said a man who was sitting on an invisible chair.

I was shocked to see that man, as I could swear that I was the only one in the room. As if he suddenly appeared.

The man was staring at me with a smile on his face. His eyes were like two dark skies with two moons, and his hair was even darker. He was sitting on an invisible chair, holding a book in his right hand, and flipping the pages with his left hand even though he was watching me. The hand holding the book had an inky texture.

"What happened to me?"

"Before I explain, let me change the background a little."

With a snap of his fingers, the once white room changed into a beautiful scene of stars in the night. I could easily tell that the view was better than those pictures I saw about outer space.

"About your question. You need to wait a little," the man said.

He then closed the book and grabbed it with his left hand, while his right hand was touching the space in front of it. The space suddenly cracked, and he put the book inside the crack. He then pulled out a super thin book that could have more than 20 pages.

He flipped the pages and stopped. "It looks like you died due to playing a game for four days straight. I should say that this type of death is quite rare," he said, maintaining the same smile from the beginning.

After hearing those words, I was in shock… or so I thought. For some reason, I was calm and quiet.

I asked, "Are you God? Where am I?"

"I'm not a God. I'm just a mere protector... a watcher, or should I say, a reader. You are in a place between everything and nothing."

The answer made me even more confused, but I didn't ask any more questions since I knew I wouldn't get anything but more confusion.

"What is going to happen to me?" I said while clenching my arm with my hand.

"There are three options you could choose. The first is that I let you pass on to… um… oh yeah, the afterlife. The second is that I return you to your body, two days before your death. And for the third one, reincarnation."

I couldn't believe what I just heard. It felt like a dream I didn't want to wake up from.

"Can I have a minute?" I said with a lot of stress.

"Sure. You can have as much as you want. I'm not busy." He then grabbed a book from the crack and started reading it.

I was excited, and I didn't know what to do. Many thoughts were crossing my mind, and the stress wasn't making it any better. I started to think about my options one by one to see what I really wanted.

The first option was out of the question. I was 22 years old when I died, and that wasn't even half a life. I wanted to do many things and experience many things, so I couldn't choose that.

The second option was okay. I could return to my apartment and play games like I usually do and live like nothing happened.

The third option… was a little thought-consuming. I would reincarnate into a world I wasn't familiar with. I would probably encounter many strange things.

I sat down and stared at the ground for more than a minute. I was thinking about my life and whether or not I should choose the third option.

I didn't know what to do. I was a normal person who played games a lot. I was living far away from my parents and didn't have a lot of friends to rely on. In fact, I wasn't sure whether anybody would notice my corpse or not since my room wasn't much different from a garbage can.

On the other hand, reincarnation, the thing I wished for more than a dozen times, and now I could do it… I already knew which option I was going to choose.

"I want to reincarnate," I said with a smile of excitement. I was grasping my chest.

It was a long second. The man stopped reading the book and was staring at me. He then stood up, put his book in the crack he made, and said, "Very well. Is there anything else that you want to know about?"

"Why me?"

"Um—even though I was the one who chose you, I can't remember the reason for it."

"What's going to happen to me?"

"You are going to reincarnate into a fantasy world. I don't like reincarnating you into a baby, so I prepared a new body just for you. Now, are you ready?"

"Yes."

"Oh, now I remember why I chose you. I liked your smile."

"Wait, wha—?"

Snap—!

It was blurry again, but this time it was different. The light felt warm, unlike the room's light. I was sitting on solid ground. The newfound headache was killing me. I stood up, and my vision got better. The sun was beaming furiously.

I was a little numb since I had just awakened, so I couldn't understand my situation. I looked around the area and saw many people who were working hard and talking together.

"So this is my new home," I muttered.

Everything was going pretty smoothly, and I didn't think I could cope with it to this extent. I took a deep breath, knowing that I had a lot of stuff to do on my first day, so I took a step… or I was going to.
