Chapter 14: heartbroken
"Ah, Alicia, our first meeting in the palace was a moment of undeniable," Jake said, his voice heavy with sorrow. "But Alicia, I cannot cling to those feelings, no matter how much my heart yearns to. Our love is a forbidden dream, a fleeting fantasy that can never be realized."
Alicia's eyes searched his face, her gaze piercing the depths of his soul. "Let's not sugarcoat it, Jake. We both know our feelings for each other are real. But you're telling me we have no future, no chance at happiness together?" Her voice cracked with emotion, her eyes brimming with tears.
Jake's eyes blazed like fiery gold, his voice rising in desperation. "Our worlds are too different, Alicia! I'm a duke, and you're a princess. Our stations, our duties, our very lives are bound by different rules. Can't you see that?" He threw his hands up in frustration, his voice echoing through the silence.
Alicia's face contorted in anguish, her voice barely above a whisper. "So you're giving up on us, on our love, without even trying? You're willing to let our feelings fade away like a dying ember, without ever exploring the possibility of a life together?" Her eyes pleaded with him, her heart laid bare before him.
"I need to tell you something, Alicia," Jake said, his voice trembling. "I'm leaving tomorrow, with my dad to my house. I just wanted to say goodbye, and...and thank you for everything." His eyes locked onto hers, filled with a mix of sadness and longing.
Alicia's eyes widened in shock, her face pale. "Goodbye? Tomorrow? But...but what about us? What about our feelings for each other?" She took a step closer, her voice barely above a whisper.
Jake's eyes dropped, his jaw clenched. "I know, Alicia. I know how we feel. But it's impossible. Our worlds are too different. I can't stay, and I can't take you with me." He took a deep breath, his voice cracking."I just wanted to say goodbye, and hope that you'll find happiness, even if it's not with me."
Alicia's eyes filled with tears as she nodded slowly, understanding the reality of their situation. She knew that her duties as a princess and her family's legacy came first. She took a deep breath and spoke, her voice firm but laced with sadness.
Alicia's voice was barely above a whisper, her eyes pleading with Jake. "Before we say goodbye forever, I need one last moment with you. One last kiss to remember the love we shared, the dreams we had, and the memories we made together." Her words were laced with sadness, longing, and nostalgia.
Jake's eyes locked onto hers, his face etched with pain, longing, and regret. He nodded slowly, his lips parting slightly as he leaned in closer, his heart heavy with melancholy.
Their lips met in a tender, passionate embrace, filled with bittersweet emotions. The kiss was a poignant reminder of what could never be, a farewell to the love they shared, and the future they would never have. Alicia's tears fell like rain, mingling with Jake's own, as they savored the moment, their hearts breaking with every second.
They pulled away, Alicia's eyes shone like stars in the night sky, filled with a mix of happiness and sorrow. "Goodbye, Jake," she whispered, her voice cracking with emotion.
Jake's face contorted in anguish, his voice cracking. "Goodbye, Alicia," he replied, his words laced with regret, longing, and a deep sense of loss.
Alicia turned and ran back to the castle, her feet carrying her swiftly across the gardens. She dashed up the stairs and into her chambers, slamming the door shut behind her. Only then did she allow herself to break down, sobbing uncontrollably into her hands.
She splashed water on her face, wiping away the tears and smudged eyeliner. Taking a deep breath, she composed herself before anyone could suspect her distress.
Meanwhile, Jake stood frozen, watching until Alicia vanished from sight. He remained there, eyes fixed on the spot where she had disappeared, his heart heavy with sorrow. He knew their love was doomed, but the pain of their parting felt like a fresh wound.
With a heavy sigh, he turned and walked away, his footsteps echoing through the stillness of the night. The only other sound was the gentle rustling of the wind through the garden flowers, their delicate petals swaying in the breeze like nature's own lament. The moon cast its silvery glow over the scene, illuminating the path ahead of him, but Jake's eyes never looked back, his gaze fixed on the uncertain future. The darkness seemed to swallow him whole, leaving behind only the faintest trace of his presence.
Selina noticed Alicia run across the crowd, her eyes fixed on her friend's fleeing figure. Concern etched on her face, she changed direction, following Alicia to her room. She knocked softly on the door, her ears tuned to the muffled sobs emanating from within.
"Alicia, are you okay?" Selina called out, her voice gentle and soothing.
The door creaked open, and Alicia's tear-stained face appeared. "Selina...I...I need a friend right now," she stammered, her eyes welling up again.
Selina's expression softened, and she stepped inside, enveloping Alicia in a warm embrace. "I'm here for you, always," she whispered, guiding Alicia back into the room before closing the door behind them.
Alicia pulled away from the hug, her eyes apologetic. "Please, can you hold your nose ?" she requested, her voice barely above a whisper.
Selina looked at her quizzically but complied, pinching her nose shut with her hand. Alicia then lay down on the floor, cradling Snowflake in her arms, and placed the bunny in its cage. She carefully moved the cage to the windowsill, far away from Selina.
Selina's eyes widened in surprise. "Now I see why I was sneezing so much that day!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with understanding.
Alicia smiled slightly, her eyes still red from crying, and got up to freshen up. She washed her hands, changed into new clothes, and then took a bath. Selina watched her in silence, knowing that Alicia was taking every precaution to avoid triggering her allergies.
After bathing and changing into fresh clothes, Alicia wrapped her arms around Selina in a warm hug. "Sorry for what happened," she whispered, her voice filled with remorse. "Snowflake is a sweet bunny, and I love her a lot." She held Selina close, her eyes shining with affection and her voice filled with sincerity.
"I won't do anything to hurt what you love, but can you let me know who hurt you?" Selina asked, leading her to the bed so they could sit down.
Alicia looked at her elder sister for a few seconds, hesitating, unsure whether to spill the beans or keep quiet.
Alicia took a deep breath, the words tumbling out of her as she revealed the entire story to Selina. Tears streamed down her face as she recounted the moments she shared with Jake, the feelings they developed for each other, and the heartbreaking realization that their social differences made a future together impossible.
She described how they struggled to maintain their friendship, but ultimately decided to end it with a bittersweet kiss before going their separate ways. Alicia's voice cracked as she relived the pain of their goodbye.
Selina listened attentively, her expression empathetic and understanding. She offered comforting words and a supportive embrace, allowing Alicia to release her emotions and process the lingering sadness.
"That's so hurtful, Alicia. I didn't expect this from Jake," Selina commented, still calming Alicia down. "I thought he would fight for you, but he ran away like a coward," she replied. "He was lucky I wasn't there, or he would have faced my wrath. The good part is, you know what he's truly made of. Stop crying for someone who doesn't deserve you already."
Selina's words were a mix of comfort and anger, her voice soft and soothing as she tried to calm Alicia down, but also laced with a hint of indignation and protectiveness towards her younger sister.
Alicia nodded, sniffling, as Selina's words resonated with her. She felt a surge of anger towards Jake, realizing that he hadn't been willing to fight for their relationship or even have an honest conversation about their differences. Selina's fierce defense and unwavering support meant a lot to Alicia, and she felt grateful to have her sister in her corner.
Selina continued to console her, Alicia began to wipe away her tears, a determination rising within her. She realized that she deserved better than someone who wasn't willing to stand up for their love, and that she was stronger than she thought.
"You know, big sis, I don't want to fall in love anymore to feel this pain in my heart," Alicia said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Selina's expression turned sympathetic, and she pulled Alicia into a warm embrace. "I understand, little one. But remember, love is a risk worth taking. You'll find someone who loves you for who you are, and you'll feel the joy that comes with it. Just take your time, and don't close your heart completely."
"I don't care, sis, but my heart doesn't deserve to be stolen by anyone, used like a toy, and dumped when they no longer need it," Alicia said, her voice cracking with emotion.
Selina's embrace tightened, and she stroked Alicia's hair, trying to soothe her pain. "Oh, Alicia, my dear, you're right. Your heart deserves so much better. It deserves to be loved, cherished, and respected. Don't let Jake's actions define your worth. You are stronger than this, and you will rise above it."
