Chapter 33: Remnants of the Past (5)
When Baek Yisoo delivered the final blow, he gasped at the lifeless body of the Poison Shadow. The air in the room was still trembling from the violence of the collision. Baek Yisoo's spear, once bright and sharp, was now covered in blood and dust.
Exhaustion gripped every muscle, stabbing like a knife into his wounds with every breath. But the rage in his eyes was still as fierce as ever.
The room finally fell silent after hours of screaming.
Bang!
Baek Yisoo slowly put down his spear and sat down on the floor to find the strength to bandage his wounds. There were about thirty cuts on his body, four of them very deep. He didn't even count the huge peeled skin on his chest.
He did not have much time. The blood he had lost was incalculable. Baek Yisoo felt that if it continued like this for a little longer, Baek Yisoo would not be saved.
"May water lilies always bloom,
Let spring bloom in every corner,
Immortality is perpetual in my soul,
Endless spring in my heart."
He immediately used the Eternal Spring Mantra and began to meditate to heal his wounds. The Eternal Spring Mantra was his greatest power. He had witnessed its miraculous powers up close after a month of holding it in his hands, including today's battle.
Spring Qi was very different from unqualified internal energy. It had four properties that he had discovered so far. The first one was Revitalization. When he circulated the Spring Qi throughout his body, a refreshing energy would relieve his body of fatigue and pain. This allowed him to last longer in training and battles. It also greatly affected his performance in bed.
The second attribute was Regeneration. With this trait, Baek Yisoo didn't have to worry about minor scratches and cuts. It also greatly increased the healing ability of his Spring Qi. The third attribute was Energy Cost. The techniques he used with his Spring Qi consumed less energy. This was the most important attribute that helped him win the battle with Poison Shadow.
The fourth trait was Harmony. This trait allowed him to be in harmony with his surroundings. It provided stealth and tranquility. Baek Yisoo had discovered these four traits so far.
He had also discovered a disadvantage of his Spring Qi. It was that his mental state affected the effectiveness of Spring Qi. If he was in a very unstable state mentally, his Spring Qi became no different from ordinary internal energy. He would lose all its advantages.
So if he wanted to use his Spring Qi, he had to be calm.
Baek Yisoo opened his eyes after about an hour. He had shaken off some of the fatigue in his body and managed to stop the bleeding.
He opened the Mission window.

Baek Yisoo managed to kill the Poison Shadow. With the Mission reward, he reached level 13. With the two Free Stat Points he had earned, he invested all of the remaining 11 Stat Points into Strength.
Baek Yisoo stood up after shaking off most of his fatigue and checked Minji's health condition.
"She's unconscious from the medicine... I have to take care of everything before she wakes up." he muttered, involuntarily relaxing as he felt the Spring Qi flowing through his body. He closed his eyes and completely cleared his mind. He took a deep breath, when he opened his eyes, everything was clearer.
"I don't know the power levels of the eight people, but if I assume that Poison Shadow is the strongest, I have to proceed tactically."
If he attacked on his own, he could die instantly. That's why Baek Yisoo had to take a different strategy, raiding and moving fast. He had to do a kind of hit-and-run.
Baek Yisoo bought an anti-inflammatory ointment and bandages from the system market and carefully bandaged the wound on his chest. The cold ointment on the wound caused the young man to take a deep, painful breath.
"Let's see what you have..."
He searched for Poison Shadow's body.
"Hm..."
He found nothing but a few poisoned needles and a small notebook. Drenched in sweat, Baek Yisoo removed the robe from Poison Shadow. Like a chicken with its feathers plucked, Poison Shadow was no more than an ordinary man without the black robe that gave him mystery.
Remembering what he had done to him, Baek Yisoo involuntarily shuddered and hesitated whether to thrust his spear again.
"Tsk," he clicked his tongue, then opened the inventory and inserted the spear. Immediately afterwards, he put on Poison Shadow's clothes.
After one last glance at Minji, he picked up one of the bloody daggers on the trolley and opened the iron door. A ruined corridor greeted him. The beam of light filtering through dozens of small holes in the ceiling showed that it was around noon outside.
Baek Yisoo kept his posture and walked along the corridor and turned right. This was a hall that had suffered the same degree of damage as the hallway before. When he looked out of the window, which was made of a few barely attached pieces of wood, he realized that he was in the back streets of Yulin.
'I'm a long way from the area where I was kidnapped.'
It was half an hour's drive between here and the street where he had been kidnapped. This area was a neighborhood of night mansions abandoned by the yangbans. It was part of the backstreets, so Hao and the Beggars' Sect had a lot of influence.
Baek Yisoo looked out the window and saw a man in black robes dozing on the balcony of the opposite building. The way he was dressed was reminiscent of Poison Shadow. He was obviously an assassin assigned by Poison Shadow to keep watch over the neighborhood.
'There is no doubt that they see me as easy prey. I must use this to my advantage and catch them by surprise.'
He took his head out of the window and continued exploring the building. After passing through a ceremonial room, he came across a staircase leading downwards.
'There is someones. Two people?'
Baek Yisoo lightened his steps as soon as he heard the sound of breathing. The two black-robed men sitting in the room just to the left of the stairs suddenly stood up when they saw Baek Yisoo coming down the stairs. This made Baek Yisoo's hair stand on end, but he managed to control himself.
'Fortunately, they are both level three...'
"C-Captain! Are you done already?" said one of the assassins in a shaky voice. Baek Yisoo slowly shook his head from side to side and motioned with his finger for one of the assassins to come over. The young assassin was confused, but he was afraid to keep a sociopath like Poison Shadow waiting, so he followed Baek Yisoo up the stairs.
"Today is a bit strange..." said the robed assassin who had stayed behind.
BANG!
He looked up the stairs when he suddenly heard the sound of something falling from above.
"You need help-?!"
His voice was interrupted by a lethal injection in his throat.
THOK!
Dropping to his knees, the assassin toppled backwards and tumbled down the stairs. Baek Yisoo, dressed in black robes, nervously dragged the assassin's body up the stairs by his feet.

The excitement and fear of killing two people stimulated his body even more. He didn't know why, but Baek Yisoo wasn't disgusted with himself. It was the first time he had done something like this, but the emotional burden was not that hard to bear.
'Well, after what I've been through...'
