Chapter 34: Meaningful Meeting
My mother froze, her eyes going wide in shock. She stared at the phone, then at me, then back at the phone, her mouth opening and closing like a fish. The confidence she'd had moments ago evaporated as her mind scrambled to process the unexpected situation.
"What's wrong, Mom? Cat got your tongue?" I raised an eyebrow at her, smirking slightly.
She shot me a sharp glare but said nothing. Instead, she waved her hand, silently demanding I handle the call. But I simply shook my head and relaxed back into the couch, gesturing for her to take over.
Her eyes narrowed, her panic shifting into annoyance. "You want me to talk?" She hissed under her breath.
"Go ahead. She's waiting." I nodded, my smirk growing.
My mother hesitated, gripping the phone tightly. "This is your mess, Luca." She whispered furiously. "You fix it."
But when the woman on the other end spoke again, my mother stiffened, clearly realizing she had no choice.
"Luca?" The woman repeated, her tone still as poised as ever. "Is something the matter? I can hear someone there."
My mother inhaled sharply, bracing herself as if she were about to enter a courtroom. Finally, she spoke, her voice steady but tinged with nervousness.
"Ah, hello. T-This is…Luca's mother speaking."
There was a brief pause on the other end, and then a soft laugh, gentle and cultured.
"Luca's mother? Well, this is a delightful surprise. I must admit, I wasn't expecting to meet you under these circumstances."
My mother's cheeks flushed slightly, her confidence faltering again. "Y-Yes, well…I was just...handling his phone for a moment. He, uh, stepped away and I-I think I accidentally called you."
I raised an eyebrow, trying to suppress a laugh. She was clearly grasping at straws.
"Oh, I see." The woman said, her amusement evident. "It's a pleasure to meet you. I must say, your son has mentioned you before."
My mother's head whipped around to look at me, her expression a mix of surprise and suspicion. "He has?" She asked, her voice betraying her curiosity despite her attempts to remain composed.
"Of course." The woman replied smoothly. "He speaks of you fondly. It's clear he holds you in high regard."
My mother's cheeks flushed deeper, and she glanced at me with an expression that screamed, Explain yourself later. But for now, she straightened her posture, her tone softening as she said,
"Well, I'm glad to hear that. And you are…?"
"Just an old acquaintance of Luca's. We go way back." The woman's response was as polished as ever.
My mother's grip on the phone tightened slightly, and she cast a sideways glance at me, her eyes narrowing. I could practically hear the wheels turning in her head as she tried to piece together this unexpected connection.
"Well, it's lovely to meet you." My mother said finally, her tone polite but laced with underlying curiosity. "Perhaps we'll speak again soon."
"I'd like that. Do let Luca know I said hello, won't you?" The woman chuckled softly.
"Of course. Take care." My mother, still somewhat flustered, replied quickly.
But just as she was about to end the call, her brows furrowed slightly, and she hesitated. Her curiosity had clearly gotten the better of her.
"Actually…If you don't mind..." She began cautiously. "...could I ask something before we hang up?"
The woman on the other end paused for a moment before responding, her voice still warm.
"Certainly. What would you like to know?"
My mother swallowed, gripping the phone a bit tighter.
"I was just wondering…What kind of relationship you had with my son?"
There was a soft, knowing laugh from the other end. "Ah, I thought you might ask that."
"...Let's just say our meeting was brief but profoundly impactful. I met Luca during a very low point in my life. But by the time we parted ways, I walked away as a better version of myself."
My mother's eyes widened, and she turned to me with an expression of awe. I could only shrug and give her a lopsided smile, as if to say, What can I say? That's just me.
She turned back to the phone, her voice now quieter, almost like she was in a daze. "
You mean to say…He helped you?"
"More than I could ever express." The woman replied gently. "It was as if he saw straight through me, to the person I was trying to be, and gave me the push I desperately needed. It's rare to meet someone who can affect you so profoundly in such a short time."
My mother blinked, processing the heartfelt words, her cheeks tinged with pride. But then, almost shyly, she asked another question.
"And…If I may ask, did you ever regret meeting him?"
This time, the woman's laugh was light and melodic. "Not at all. In fact, it's one of the most pivotal encounters of my life. I'll always remember it fondly. Your son is…let's just say he has a certain charm and passion that leave an impression. Though…" She paused briefly before adding with a mischievous edge. "Perhaps calling him 'spicy and unrestrained under the sheets' would be more appropriate. But I suppose that's not something I should say to his mother, is it?"
The implication made my mother's cheeks burn bright red. Her grip on the phone faltered for a second as she stammered, "Oh! Um…No, I mean—uh, I suppose not."
I couldn't help but grin at her flustered reaction, though I was doing my best not to burst into laughter.
The woman on the other end chuckled softly, clearly enjoying the moment as she said, "Take care, Mrs. Valencia. It was a pleasure speaking with you."
"Y-Yes, of course. You too." My mother managed, her voice barely above a whisper as she ended the call. The phone dropped onto her lap as she stared at it in silence for a moment, her face still pink with embarrassment.
Finally, she turned to me, narrowing her eyes in a mixture of suspicion and disbelief as she said, "Luca…What exactly did you with that lovely lady?"
But I didn't answer like she thought I would and raised a hand, cutting her off before she could even start.
"Hold it, Mom. I told you, I'm okay with showing you my contacts...But their stories? That's off-limits. Those are their lives, their trust. I'm not about to betray that, not even for you."
My tone was firm, my gaze unwavering as I stared her down. I could tell she was taken aback, her lips parting slightly as if to protest.
But then, to my surprise, her expression softened.
"I see..." She murmured, a faint smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "I guess I shouldn't be surprised. You've always been like this, haven't you? Loyal to a fault." She paused, her eyes glinting with something warm. "I appreciate that, Luca. It's good to know I didn't raise someone who goes around spilling secrets...You've got integrity, and I'm proud of that."
Her praise was unexpected, and for a brief moment, I felt my resolve waver. But I managed to keep my composure, shrugging lightly as if her words hadn't just struck a chord deep inside me.
