Chapter 19: battle in the shadows
The forest was alive with the weight of dread, shadows stretching and twisting unnaturally under the moon's pale light. The air felt colder than before, as though the night itself were shivering. Arina's fire crackled softly in his palms, the only warmth in a place now burdened by an unnatural chill. Beside him, Zeke stood in his lion form, his golden mane shimmering faintly as his muscles tensed, ready to spring.
Ahead of them, six shadows slithered closer, their forms shifting, part solid, part smoke. Their movements were silent, each step deliberate, unnatural, and menacing. But worse than the six of them was the giant shadow looming behind them, its immense form blotting out the moonlight. It was monstrous—its arms too long, its hollow eyes glowing faintly as though the night had given it life.
Kara, standing tall with his bow drawn, addressed the centaur warriors. "Hold your ground! Defend the village!" His voice rang out, clear and unyielding. Around him, the centaurs moved swiftly, hooves pounding against the earth as they formed lines of defense, bows nocked with glowing arrows etched with ancient runes.
Zeke let out a guttural growl that reverberated through the clearing. He turned his lion's gaze toward Arina, sharp and protective. "Stay close, Arina! This isn't some training exercise!"
Arina's fists clenched, the fire dancing brighter between his fingers. "I can fight!" he shot back, though the tremor in his voice betrayed his fear. His eyes darted to the giant shadow towering in the distance, and his chest tightened. The sight of it was paralyzing.
The first shadow struck. It moved like a streak of darkness, lunging at Arina with inky tendrils. Arina barely dodged, stumbling backward as its smoky claws scraped through the air. In a panic, he hurled a fireball. The flames exploded against the shadow's form, and it let out an unearthly shriek, its body convulsing before disintegrating into smoke.
Zeke roared and pounced, his claws tearing through another shadow with animalistic fury. Its screech echoed through the forest, shaking the trees. The centaurs loosed a volley of arrows that streaked like falling stars through the dark. When they struck, the shadows recoiled, writhing as the arrows pinned them down, glowing faintly in the gloom.
But there were too many. For every shadow struck down, another seemed to slither forth, rising from the darkness itself.
Kara's voice cut through the chaos. "Don't falter! Focus on their cores!" His bow twanged, and an arrow sailed into a shadow's chest, igniting a small explosion of light and smoke.
Arina dodged another swipe and countered with a wall of fire that split the battlefield in half. The flames burned fiercely, driving the shadows back for a brief moment. He glanced to his side and saw Zeke slashing through two more, his roars carrying above the screams of their enemies.
"We're holding them off!" Arina shouted, hope flickering in his voice.
"Not for long," Zeke growled back, his paws digging into the earth.
Suddenly, the ground trembled. A deep, resonant growl shook the trees, and all eyes turned toward the giant shadow. It took one step forward, the sound like thunder rolling through the clearing. Its glowing eyes narrowed as its massive arm swung out, sweeping through the forest like a dark hurricane. Trees cracked and splintered under the force, and several centaurs were hurled backward, crashing into the ground.
Arina froze as the monstrous shadow roared, the sound splitting the air like an earthquake. "What—what is that thing?!" he stammered, his voice thin with terror.
"A nightmare given form," Zeke snarled, baring his teeth as his golden fur bristled. "Stay back!"
But Arina didn't listen. He could feel his fire burning hotter than before, like the fear was fueling his power. He stepped forward, hands glowing bright as he conjured another ball of flame. "If we don't stop it now, we're done!"
The giant shadow swung again. Zeke barely leapt out of the way, his massive form darting with surprising agility. Kara shouted orders, trying to rally his warriors, but their arrows barely slowed the monstrosity. It was as though the creature absorbed the very light and magic they hurled at it.
Zeke roared and lunged at the shadow's leg, his claws raking through the darkness. The giant stumbled, its roar turning to a screech of rage. Arina seized the moment.
"Zeke! Keep it busy!"
Zeke growled in frustration but obeyed, his powerful jaws snapping at the creature's shifting form. Arina dug his feet into the earth, drawing his hands back as fire coiled up his arms like living serpents. His breathing quickened as he summoned everything he had.
"Burn!" he roared, thrusting his hands forward. A torrent of flame erupted from his palms, streaking toward the giant shadow's chest like a blazing comet. The fire struck true, exploding in a burst of orange and gold. The creature let out a howl that rattled Arina's bones, its massive form trembling as flames consumed it.
For a heartbeat, everything seemed still. But then the flames flickered and died.
The shadow turned, its hollow eyes locking onto Zeke. With a roar, it swatted him aside like a ragdoll. Zeke crashed into a tree with a sickening thud, his body going limp for a moment before he struggled to rise.
"Zeke!" Arina screamed, his heart pounding.
Kara's voice rang out again. "Fall back! Regroup near the village!"
The centaur warriors began a hasty retreat, their arrows providing cover as they fell back into the trees. Arina rushed to Zeke, who was panting, his golden fur streaked with dirt and blood.
"Get up!" Arina shouted, pulling at his mane. "We're not done yet!"
Zeke growled weakly but forced himself to stand. Together, they staggered after the others, leaving behind a battlefield littered with ash, smoke, and splintered wood.
The forest grew eerily quiet as the shadows pulled back, the giant fading into the darkness like a storm retreating.
---
They moved cautiously, the centaurs staying close as they regrouped. Kara stopped suddenly, his eyes narrowing as he peered through the smoke.
"Wait... someone's here."
Arina squinted and spotted a figure slumped against a tree. As they approached, the figure came into view—a centaur, his body battered, blood pooling beneath him.
"Kara," the dying centaur rasped, his voice little more than a whisper.
Kara rushed forward, his face etched with worry. He knelt beside the centaur, his hand gripping the man's shoulder. "Hold on! We'll get you help!"
The centaur's eyes fluttered open weakly, his gaze distant but determined. "It's... too late for me..."
"No, don't say that!" Kara urged, his voice cracking.
The centaur coughed, his breath shallow. "...Take care of my daughter... please, Kara..." He swallowed, his voice trembling as he forced out the last words. "Her name is... Lira."
Kara bowed his head, his face shadowed by grief. "I will. I promise."
The centaur exhaled softly, the faint spark of life leaving him as his body grew still.
Arina stood frozen, his heart heavy as the scene unfolded before him. Zeke stood silently at his side, golden eyes glowing faintly in the darkness.
"This isn't over," Arina whispered, his voice barely audible.
Zeke's rumble of agreement was low, edged with quiet rage. "No. It's just beginning."
The forest around them was silent, save for the distant crackling of flames and the whisper of shadows lurking beyond the trees.
