Shadows Of Deception

Chapter 79: Arrival in Blackstone

The air around the Free World border was electric, the shimmering portal spikes crackling with energy as it pulsed ominously in the dim light. Jin, Madagascar, Shenlog, Jingwei, and Seiji stood in front of it, their expressions a mix of determination and readiness. Rebekah was behind them, her hands clenched into fists, her resolve unshaken.

"I'm coming with you," Rebekah declared, stepping forward. Her fiery tone matched her fierce determination.

Shenlog turned slowly, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. "War is no place for a woman," he said mockingly, his voice laced with sarcasm. "Shouldn't you be back home knitting or something?"

Rebekah's eyes narrowed, and she opened her mouth to retort, but Seiji interrupted with a laugh. "Ah, Shenlog, always the charmer. One day, you'll say something clever enough to match your strength."

Rebekah crossed her arms and glared at Shenlog, who gave a dismissive wave before turning his attention back to the portal. "Let's go," he said firmly, his tone all business now.

The portal spiked with energy, arcs of dark electricity snapping at the air as the group leaped into it one by one. The sensation was immediate—a rush of wind and gravity, a freefall into the unknown. The tunnel was pitch-black, pulsating with waves of dark energy that pressed against their bodies like a suffocating weight.

They fell for what felt like an eternity, the roaring wind drowning out their thoughts. Then, with a sudden, jarring stop, they landed on solid ground.

Blackstone: A City of Shadows

The group stood in the heart of Blackstone City, the oppressive air thick with an unsettling silence. The streets and buildings were unlike anything they'd seen before—every structure, every road, every wall was made of black stone, its glossy surface reflecting faint light like polished obsidian. The city seemed to pulse with a sinister energy, its dark architecture creating an eerie maze of sharp angles and looming towers.

"Blackstone," Seiji said with a whistle, his hands on his hips. "Well, they certainly weren't subtle with the name, were they?"

Shenlog ignored him, turning to Jingwei. "Use your All-Seeing Eyes. Retrace what happened here in the last twenty-four hours."

Jingwei nodded, closing his eyes for a moment before opening them again. His irises glowed a brilliant white, the light illuminating the shadows around them. He stared intently at the ground, his gaze sweeping across the city as images from the past replayed in his vision.

Jingwei's voice was calm but steady as he narrated what he saw. "The Sentinel team that sent us the coordinates—they made it here, but they were intercepted." His glowing eyes focused on a spot near a broken wall. "Rex was here. He killed them. Quick, precise. Four cubes… they floated around them before the explosion."

The group fell silent, processing the grim news.

"But that's not all," Jingwei continued. His gaze shifted toward the center of the city. "The weapons we're looking for—X and Max—they're here. Hidden beneath the main tower."

Shenlog's expression hardened. "Good work, Jingwei. We'll move out soon."

Jingwei's eyes returned to normal, and he exhaled, clearly drained from the effort. Seiji clapped him on the back with a grin. "See how easy that was? Now, can we go home? I could really use some tea."

Jingwei shot him a tired look, but before he could respond, the air in the city shifted.

Far away in the center of Blackstone, Nicklaus sat in a throne-like chair, his legs casually crossed. His sharp, fox-like features twisted into a sly smile as his eyes shrank to slits, then widened again. He leaned forward, his attention clearly piqued.

"Some unwanted guests have arrived," he said, his tone dripping with amusement. "And some seem… very familiar."

Rex, who stood silently beside him, turned his head slightly. "How do you know?" he asked, his voice cold and measured.

Nicklaus chuckled softly, his movements deliberate as he uncrossed his legs and rose to his feet. "Oh, my dear Rex, there's a reason I was chosen to govern Blackstone." He gestured to his ears, which twitched slightly, their sharp, pointed tips catching the dim light. "They're called The Jerbo. These lovely little enhancements grant me the ability to hear everything that happens within Blackstone—and a hundred miles beyond."

Rex's eyes narrowed slightly. "They're always active?"

Nicklaus's grin widened. "Always. Even when I'm resting. Every whisper, every breath, every misplaced footstep—it's all mine."

He took a step forward, his hands clasped behind his back, and tilted his head slightly. "And now," he said, his voice dropping to a whisper, "let's go greet our guests, shall we?"

The chapter ends with Nicklaus striding confidently through the dark halls of his tower, his footsteps echoing ominously. The camera shifts to the group in Blackstone's streets, the tension palpable as they prepare to move toward their target. The shadows around them seem to grow deeper, the city itself a silent predator waiting to strike.
